Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePreventing a Windows rootkit starts with keeping Windows and applications updated, avoiding suspicious links and downloads, and maintaining backups you can restore. Secure Boot and Microsoft Defender Offline add useful protection and checking options, but no single feature guarantees that a PC cannot be infected.
How do I prevent rootkits on Windows?
A rootkit hides malicious activity by interfering with normal operating-system processes. As a result, a compromised Windows installation may not accurately report what is running. Microsoft says, “Like any other type of malware, the best way to avoid rootkits is to prevent it from being installed in the first place.”

Recommended Free Tools
- Install updates for Windows and your applications. Use their built-in update mechanisms and do not leave available security updates indefinitely unapplied.
- Be cautious with links, websites, email attachments, and downloads. Avoid opening unexpected attachments or installing software from sources you do not trust.
- Keep regular backups. Microsoft recommends the 3-2-1 approach: three copies of your data, on two types of storage, with at least one copy offsite. A backup drive can be one optional destination, but it is not a rootkit detector or prevention control.
These measures reduce risk and improve recovery options; they do not establish that infection is impossible. Microsoft’s guidance does not quantify a consumer’s likelihood of encountering a rootkit.

What do Secure Boot and Trusted Boot protect?
Rootkits can target different layers: firmware rootkits target device firmware, bootkits tamper with the bootloader, kernel rootkits target the Windows kernel, and driver rootkits masquerade as drivers. Startup protections address parts of this chain, but the features available and their behavior depend on the PC’s firmware, hardware, and configuration.
| Protection | What it checks or does | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Secure Boot | Checks trusted signatures along the UEFI-to-Windows boot path. | Requires compatible UEFI firmware and an appropriate configuration. |
| Trusted Boot | Continues integrity verification through the Windows kernel and startup components. | Works beyond the initial firmware boot checks; it is not a guarantee against every threat. |
| Early Launch Anti-Malware (ELAM) | Checks boot drivers early in startup. | Its availability and behavior are configuration-dependent. |
| Measured Boot | Records boot measurements that can be assessed. | Recording measurements is distinct from blocking every malicious change. |
Microsoft describes these protections as parts of a secure boot process, not as substitutes for updates, careful downloading, or backups. Details: Secure the Windows boot process and Secure Boot and Trusted Boot.

How do I check if Secure Boot is enabled?
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Device security.
- Look for the Secure Boot status in the security features shown for your device. The exact information available can vary by hardware and configuration.
For firmware settings or instructions on changing them, consult the PC maker’s guidance. Do not switch Secure Boot off or change firmware settings based on generic instructions: some hardware or operating-system setups may require Secure Boot to be disabled. Microsoft’s overview of Device security in the Windows Security app explains what may appear there.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow do I run a Microsoft Defender Offline scan?
Defender Offline scans after restarting Windows and runs outside the normal Windows kernel. That can make it harder for persistent malware to hide or interfere with the scan, but a scan result should not be treated as proof that a compromised system is trustworthy.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I do if I suspect a rootkit?
Use Defender Offline as a checking option, but keep the limits of on-device reports in mind: rootkits interfere with normal operating-system processes, so a compromised Windows installation may not be a reliable source of its own status. If the problem persists or the rootkit cannot be removed, Microsoft advises reinstalling Windows and security software, then restoring data from backup.
