A paper notebook avoids app-based processing for ordinary writing; a local-first journal may keep entries and AI on your device; voice tools vary in where they transcribe audio; and chatbot journals can send entries to outside providers. Check the path each feature takes rather than relying on labels such as “private” or “local.”
Choose by what you want from an AI diary
- Less digital exposure: Use a paper journal, or evaluate a digital journal whose specific features work locally.
- Less typing: Try voice notes or voice journaling, but find out whether the recording, transcript, or both leave your device.
- Conversational reflection: A chatbot-style journal can respond to entries, but may send selected text or audio to its operator or an AI provider.
These categories overlap. An app can store ordinary entries locally but send selected entries to a model when you invoke an AI feature. Audio recording, transcript, saved journal entry, and AI prompt are separate data types and may follow different paths.

The details below are providers’ own disclosures, not independent security audits. Policies can change; check the current policy and settings before entering sensitive material.
Weave: vendor-described on-device journal and AI
Weave’s privacy policy, updated September 21, 2026, says entries stay in a local phone database, no account or sign-in is required, voice transcription runs on-device and audio is deleted immediately, and AI reflections run on-device. These are the company’s stated practices, not an independent verification. Weave privacy policy.

Paper: local ordinary writing, optional sync and AI
Paper’s privacy page, updated July 2026, says ordinary writing and reading are local file operations, while sync and AI are opt-in. It says synced content is encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM, but is not end-to-end encrypted because Paper’s servers hold the decryption key. When an AI command is used, relevant entries and a profile are sent to Paper’s server and onward to Anthropic’s API. Paper privacy and data page.
Argo: audio transcription handled by Deepgram
Argo’s policy, updated August 31, 2026, says voice and video audio is sent over an encrypted connection to Deepgram for transcription, and that Deepgram does not retain it for other purposes. That statement concerns the described transcription handling; it does not establish that no other entity processes the entry. Argo privacy policy.

noor: device speech recognition, with separate AI sharing
noor’s policy, effective September 26, 2026, says entries remain on-device unless cloud sync is enabled. It says AI reflections and personalization involve sending text and, for voice journaling, a short audio recording to AI providers. Its policy also notes that device speech recognition may process audio on Apple or Google servers under their own terms. noor privacy policy.

Mirror: local encrypted storage with a password recovery trade-off
Mirror’s policy, effective July 29, 2026, describes an Android app with local encrypted storage and on-device AI. It says the encryption key derives from the user’s password, so the journal cannot be recovered if that password is forgotten. Mirror privacy policy.

Claire: an example of hosted conversational journaling
Claire’s policy, updated September 17, 2026, says it stores entries, transcripts, and call recordings while an account is active, and that voice, transcription, AI, and cloud providers process data needed to run the service. This is one hosted service’s description, not a claim about all chatbot journals. Claire privacy policy.
How to evaluate a private journal app or voice feature
- Identify each data type. Ask separately where the original audio, transcript, saved entry, and AI prompt are processed and stored.
- Check the feature, not just the app. Look for whether transcription, sync, backup, and AI are optional, and what happens when each is enabled.
- Read the service’s current policy. Note the update date and whether the provider describes retention, deletion, third-party processors, or account requirements. Treat policy statements as disclosures, not proof from an independent audit.
- Consider recovery and physical access. A paper notebook can be lost or read; a device can be accessed or lost; local encryption may make recovery impossible if credentials are forgotten.
- Decide what you are willing to trade. Offline capture reduces reliance on services but may forgo sync and conversational features. Cloud features can add convenience while creating additional data paths.
When a paper journal is the better alternative
If you want to write without an app account, transcription, or AI processing, a paper notebook is the most straightforward option. It does not automatically protect the contents: keep it somewhere appropriate and consider whether making digital copies would introduce the very cloud exposure you want to avoid.

For a voice notes workflow, distinguish automatic transcription from AI rewriting: the first turns speech into text; the second may transmit that text—or audio—to a model. If low exposure is your priority, favor a workflow whose processing path you can verify and whose optional features you can leave off. If conversational feedback matters more, examine precisely what the service stores and shares before using it for sensitive entries.
