To reduce overnight diaper leaks, first check that the diaper fits comfortably, is centered, and has its leg cuffs pulled out. If it is regularly saturated by morning despite a good fit, try a more absorbent or overnight diaper. For babies, keep safe-sleep practices unchanged: diaper positioning means adjusting the diaper on the body, never changing a baby’s sleep position or adding loose items to the sleep space.
Check the diaper’s fit before changing products
A diaper can leak when it leaves gaps around the waist or legs, or when a leg cuff is folded inward. Use this checklist at bedtime:

- Choose a diaper that fits your child’s current size and sits evenly around the waist and hips. Check for gaps.
- Center the front between the legs and pull the diaper up so the back sits at least as high as the front, around belly-button level.
- Fasten the tabs evenly so the diaper is secure without being overly tight.
- Pull each leg cuff out so the fringe is not trapped inside the elastic. HealthyChildren’s diaper-changing guidance specifically recommends keeping the leg fringe outside the elastic edges: HealthyChildren: Diapering Your Baby.
A diaper should not be tightened to the point that it removes breathing room. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends a highly absorbent diaper to help keep skin dry and advises making sure the diaper is not too tight, especially overnight: HealthyChildren: Diaper Rash.
When to try a more absorbent diaper
If the diaper is routinely saturated by morning and the fit is comfortable, it may be reaching its absorbency limit. Trying a highly absorbent or overnight diaper is a reasonable next step. Pampers’ consumer guidance also suggests checking fit and leg cuffs and considering an overnight diaper for longer stretches: Pampers: How to Prevent Diaper Leaks.

Do not assume that moving up a size will always stop leaks. Fit can differ by child and diaper model; use the fit checks above and follow the product’s own directions. No cited guidance establishes that any particular brand guarantees dry nights.
How to think about booster pads
Disposable diaper booster pads are another product category intended to add absorbency. Medline’s catalog describes them as helping reduce leaks, but that is a product description, not independent evidence of comparative performance or proof that a pad is suitable for every child: Medline: Disposable Booster Pads.

If considering a booster pad, check its directions and whether it is intended for your child’s age and diaper type. Independent head-to-head testing establishing which option performs best was not available in the cited sources, so there is no evidence-based brand ranking here.
Keep infant safe sleep separate from leak troubleshooting
Positioning here means positioning the diaper on the body—not placing a baby on their side or stomach. CDC guidance says to put babies on their backs for every sleep, on a firm, flat, non-inclined surface, and to keep soft bedding out of the sleep area: CDC: Helping Babies Sleep Safely.

Do not add a towel, blanket, pillow, or other loose item to catch leaks, and do not use a sleep positioner to change a baby’s sleep posture. The AAP reported in 2022 that approximately 3,500 U.S. infants die each year from sleep-related infant deaths, including SIDS, ill-defined deaths, and accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed; this figure is safe-sleep context, not evidence that diaper leaks cause those deaths: AAP: Sleep-Related Infant Deaths: Updated 2022.
