FPS per watt measures how much game performance a handheld delivers for the power it uses. It matters because a handheld has a finite battery: higher efficiency can mean more frames at a similar power draw, or the same playable experience using less power. But the metric is only useful when the test specifies what “power” means and holds the game and settings constant.
What FPS per watt tells you—and what it does not
A simple ratio is average frames per second divided by watts. To be meaningful, the frame rate and power reading must come from the same workload, and the measurement method must be disclosed. The result describes that tested setup, not every game or every mode on the device.

Most importantly, distinguish processor power from whole-handheld power. AMD lists configurable TDP ranges for its handheld processors: 9–30 W for Ryzen Z1 and Z1 Extreme, and 15–35 W for Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme and Z2 Extreme. Those are processor configuration specifications, not measurements of total device draw or battery drain. A ratio calculated from one of those figures should be labeled “FPS per watt of configured APU TDP,” not simply “FPS per watt.” AMD’s Ryzen Z1 specifications and Ryzen Z2 specifications identify these ranges.

The display and other components also draw energy, so an APU-TDP ratio cannot tell you exactly how quickly a handheld’s battery will run down. For a battery-life comparison, use measured battery-side power or runtime under matched conditions, and report it separately from an APU-based ratio.

Why efficiency matters on battery
A more efficient setup gives you a choice: keep performance similar while using less power, or spend a similar power budget on more performance. That can affect how long you play before charging, but efficiency by itself does not determine runtime. Game load, screen brightness, refresh rate, resolution, frame cap, power mode and background activity all matter.
Battery capacity is not a runtime promise. Valve specifies a 40 Wh battery for Steam Deck and estimates approximately 7–8 hours for lighter activities such as streaming, smaller 2D games or web browsing; it describes play time for most games as several hours. Those are manufacturer statements, not a demanding-game test or a matched comparison with another handheld. Valve’s Steam Deck hardware specifications provide the details.

ASUS lists a 40 Wh battery for the original ROG Ally, whose 7-inch display supports 1920 × 1080 resolution and a 120 Hz refresh rate. Battery capacity alone cannot say how long a particular game will run on it. ASUS’s 2023 Ally announcement gives those specifications.
Why FPS alone can mislead
A higher average FPS can require more power, and the average does not show whether frame delivery is smooth. When comparing handhelds, consider the performance target—such as 30, 40 or 60 FPS—and frame-time behavior when available. A device that sustains a chosen target may be a better fit than one that posts a higher average but fluctuates, particularly if the latter uses substantially more power.

Settings can change both the image and the ratio. Resolution, graphics preset, frame cap, refresh rate, upscaling and frame generation all affect results. AMD describes FSR as in-game upscaling and frame generation for supported games and products; enabling it can alter the displayed frame rate, image quality and power use. An FPS comparison should state whether these features were enabled rather than treating the resulting numbers as directly equivalent.

Manufacturer FPS charts
ASUS labels its original ROG Ally game charts as Turbo mode at 30 W while plugged in, with the FPS limiter and V-Sync off. The charts specify games and resolution or quality presets, and ASUS cautions that configuration and newer drivers can change results. These are useful performance figures for the stated setup, not evidence of battery-mode efficiency or a whole-device FPS-per-watt ranking. ASUS’s Ally performance guide describes its chart conditions.

Independent tests and mode-specific results
Tom’s Hardware’s original ROG Ally review reports game-specific frame rates for the Ally and Steam Deck under its own test settings. It found that the Ally’s relative results changed with resolution and plugged-in Turbo operation. Its battery examples also varied by workload: around two hours in tests using 720p, about 50% screen brightness and a 60 FPS ceiling, versus around 1 hour 30 minutes in a Rocket League session using the display’s higher refresh-rate capability. A separate PCMark gaming battery test produced 1 hour 43 minutes for the Ally. These are review-era results tied to those protocols, not universal runtime estimates. Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A newer-device example shows why performance does not necessarily scale in proportion to a mode’s stated wattage. In Tom’s Guide’s ROG Xbox Ally X review, Cyberpunk 2077 at 720p Ultra with no resolution scaling ran at 16.6 FPS in 35 W Turbo and 11.9 FPS in 17 W Performance. In the same review, Red Dead Redemption 2 at 1080p Medium measured 21.9 and 20.3 FPS in those modes, while Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 1080p High measured 30 and 26 FPS. Those results illustrate workload-specific scaling; they do not establish total-device FPS per watt because the stated mode wattages are not disclosed as matched whole-device power measurements. Tom’s Guide’s ROG Xbox Ally X review also reports gaming battery-test results of 2 hours 56 minutes for the Xbox Ally X and 3 hours 4 minutes for the older ROG Ally X. Treat those figures as results of its review test, not guarantees for other games or settings.

How to compare FPS per watt fairly
A useful comparison holds the workload and image-quality target constant, measures the same power boundary for every device and reports the raw results alongside the ratio. Include enough detail that another reader could understand what was tested:
- Workload: game and build, scene or benchmark, resolution, graphics preset, and any upscaling or frame generation.
- Performance: average FPS, frame cap and refresh rate; add frame-time or stability data if available.
- Power boundary: configured APU TDP, measured battery-side draw or measured wall power. Do not combine one device’s TDP with another device’s whole-system reading.
- Operating conditions: power mode, plugged-in or battery operation, screen brightness and relevant background activity.
- Battery outcome: capacity in Wh and runtime from a matched test. Keep these separate from the instantaneous FPS-per-watt ratio.
For example, a report could show “average FPS ÷ measured whole-device watts” for a named game and scene, alongside both raw values. If only configured APU TDP is available, say so explicitly and avoid presenting the result as total handheld efficiency. Neither a battery capacity figure nor an FPS chart alone supplies the missing measurement.
Practical settings for longer play
For a game you are playing, start with a frame-rate target you find playable, then adjust settings to hold it with less unnecessary work. The right balance is game-specific:
Recommended Free Tools
- Set a frame cap at your chosen target, such as 30 or 40 FPS, rather than letting the game render frames you do not need.
- If the handheld cannot sustain that target, lower resolution or graphics quality and check whether frame delivery improves.
- Reduce screen brightness and avoid using a higher refresh rate than the game or target requires.
- Try supported upscaling if it helps meet the target, but judge image quality as well as the FPS counter.
- Check actual performance and battery behavior in the game you play; a setting that helps one title may not help another.
Tom’s Hardware specifically notes a 30 FPS lock and reduced brightness as ways to extend play time in its Ally testing. Its findings support those adjustments as practical options, not a promise of a particular runtime.
How to interpret an FPS-per-watt claim
- If the “watt” is APU TDP, the figure describes performance relative to a configured processor power level—not the whole handheld’s battery use.
- If test conditions differ, the ratio may reflect different image quality, workloads or operating modes rather than efficiency alone.
- If only average FPS is reported, you cannot infer frame pacing or whether the device sustains a playable target.
- If runtime is the question, look for a matched battery test; capacity in Wh and a manufacturer’s light-use estimate do not predict demanding-game endurance.
Official specifications are model-specific, and manufacturer charts reflect their stated conditions. Independent reviews are tied to their own test methods, games, firmware and drivers. The cited examples do not establish a universal efficiency winner: that requires a current, matched comparison using the same workload and disclosed whole-device power measurements.
