To lower the risk of malware, keep your operating system, browser, and apps updated; leave built-in site, download, and app checks enabled; and install software only from a source you trust. These settings can block or warn about known threats, but no single control catches everything or guarantees a malware-free device.
Start with updates and trusted software
Security updates fix known weaknesses that attackers may exploit. Keep Windows or macOS, your browser, and your apps current, and restart when an update requires it. Microsoft’s advice is direct: “Keep your device up-to-date with the latest updates for Windows, your browser, and your apps.” Microsoft’s guidance on unwanted software also recommends a modern browser, a regularly updated antivirus product, and trusted sources for apps.

Download software from its developer or a reputable app store, and install it only when you intended to do so. Stop if an unexpected installer, unfamiliar browser extension, fake update prompt, or warning-bypass request appears. If a warning might be mistaken, verify the software through the developer’s official channel instead of following a link in a pop-up or switching off protection.
Which protections cover which risks?
Browser and operating-system controls overlap, but they do different jobs. Site reputation checks can warn about phishing or malicious pages; download checks assess files before you open them; app checks assess software you try to install; and protected-folder controls limit what apps can change after installation.

- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
| Protection | What it checks or limits | Typical response |
|---|---|---|
| Browser site reputation | Websites reported as deceptive or malicious | Warns or blocks access |
| Browser download protection | Files identified as dangerous or suspicious | Warns or blocks a download |
| Operating-system app checks | Downloaded apps, installers, or installed apps | Warns, blocks, or in some cases disables or removes an app |
| Protected-folder controls | Attempts by apps to change selected files and folders | Blocks an app that is not allowed |
Exact behavior depends on the platform and setting. Treat a warning as a reason to pause and verify, not as proof that every flagged file is malicious—or that an unflagged file is safe.
Windows 10 and 11: keep Windows Security protections active
Open Windows Security and review the following areas. Menu names and availability can vary with Windows version, updates, and device-management policy.
Review App & browser control
In Windows Security > App & browser control, review reputation-based protection and Microsoft Defender SmartScreen settings for apps, files, websites, and Edge downloads. These checks can warn about or block items with a known poor reputation. See Microsoft’s App & browser control guide for current options.

- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Smart App Control is a Windows 11 feature, not a general switch available on every Windows 11 PC, and it is not available on Windows 10. Microsoft limits its availability to new installations or eligible reset or reinstall situations. Do not assume it can be enabled on an existing installation. Exploit protection is already active with default settings for most users; changing its advanced settings is not a routine malware-prevention step.
Check antivirus and protection intelligence
Under Windows Security > Virus & threat protection, make sure Microsoft Defender Antivirus—or a reputable security provider you deliberately installed—is active. Check that its protection intelligence is current. Windows receives Defender intelligence through Windows Update, and the Windows Security area provides an option to check for updates. Microsoft explains the controls in its Virus & threat protection guide.
Consider Controlled folder access
Controlled folder access, in the ransomware-protection settings, can help prevent unknown apps from changing files in protected folders. If it blocks an app you know is legitimate, verify the app and then allow it through the setting rather than turning off the protection without checking. It is a safeguard for selected files and folders, not a substitute for keeping backups or avoiding unsafe downloads.

Chrome: keep Safe Browsing on and choose a protection level
In Chrome, open Settings > Privacy and security > Security and check Safe Browsing. Standard protection is on by default and checks for known dangers. Chrome can also block downloads it identifies as dangerous; take download warnings seriously rather than disabling protection just to retrieve a file. Google describes Safe Browsing protection levels and download warnings in separate help pages.

Standard versus Enhanced protection
Enhanced protection can warn about potential new dangers, including sites or downloads Google has not previously identified. It also sends additional information to Google for security checks: URLs and a small sample of page content, along with extension activity, download information, and system information. Standard and Enhanced therefore involve different levels of protection and data sharing. Choose based on whether you value the additional warnings enough to accept that extra sharing; Enhanced is not a requirement for everyone.
Edge: leave Microsoft Defender SmartScreen on
Keep Microsoft Defender SmartScreen enabled in Edge. It checks pages and downloads against reported phishing and malicious software and may show a warning or block a known dangerous site or download. SmartScreen relies on reputation information, so its checks reduce risk without guaranteeing that a new or unreported threat will be caught. See Microsoft’s SmartScreen explanation.

Firefox: retain deceptive-content and download checks
Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Security. Leave Block dangerous and deceptive content, Block dangerous downloads, and the warning for unwanted and uncommon software enabled. Mozilla says these protections are enabled by default unless changed. They can identify known risks, but cannot establish that every unfamiliar download is safe. Details are in Mozilla’s Firefox protection guide.

Do not proceed through a deceptive-site warning
If Safari flags a site as deceptive, malicious, or potentially harmful, Apple recommends not visiting it. Do not enter personal or financial information on a page marked Not Secure. Check the address carefully and navigate to the legitimate service’s encrypted website rather than trusting a link in a suspicious message. Apple explains these warnings in its guide to avoiding fraud with encrypted websites in Safari.
Keep Gatekeeper checks in place
macOS Gatekeeper checks downloaded apps, plug-ins, and installers for developer identity and notarisation. In System Settings > Privacy & Security > Security, Apple documents options to allow apps from the App Store only, or from the App Store and identified developers. If macOS says it cannot verify an app, do not casually bypass the warning; confirm the download and publisher through an official source first. Apple’s guide to safely opening apps on a Mac describes the checks and settings.

Android: keep Google Play Protect enabled
To check the setting, open Play Store > profile > Play Protect > Settings and leave Play Protect on. Google says it checks apps and devices for harmful behavior and may warn about, disable, or remove harmful apps. Play Protect is an app-safety layer, not a reason to install apps from unknown sources without scrutiny. Google also notes that its protections may process device connections, potentially harmful URLs, operating-system details, and installed-app information. See Google Play Protect’s safety and privacy information.
What to do when a security warning appears
- Pause. Do not open the file, enter account details, or approve an installer just to clear the warning.
- Check what triggered it. Note the site address, file name, publisher, and the browser or operating-system warning.
- Verify independently. Go to the developer’s official website or app store yourself; do not use contact details or download links supplied by an unsolicited pop-up.
- Keep the protection enabled. If you believe a warning is a false positive, seek confirmation from the publisher or your organization’s IT administrator before changing a setting.
These protections are layers, not a guarantee. A newly created threat may not yet have a reputation, and a warning-free download is not automatically trustworthy. Updates, enabled reputation checks, careful software choices, and platform defenses work together to reduce exposure.
