If a video with an AC-3 audio track is silent in Windows 11, first check whether the track is actually AC-3 (also called Dolby Digital), then check your Windows version and PC maker’s media software. Windows 11 version 24H2 and later no longer include AC-3 by default, though some manufacturers preinstall it and upgrades from earlier Windows versions retain it. If your PC has no decoder, use a trusted player or decoder whose official documentation explicitly confirms AC-3 support.
Why AC-3 playback may have stopped working
AC-3, also known as Dolby Digital, is a compressed audio codec that can carry multichannel sound. A codec decodes the audio stream; it is distinct from the player application and the file container, such as AVI or ASF. A player may use codecs installed by other media software, but support can vary by app and PC.

Microsoft states that “Beginning with Windows 11, version 24H2, the AC-3 codec is no longer included with Windows.” That default change does not mean every 24H2-or-later PC lacks AC-3: a computer maker may have preinstalled it, and a Windows upgrade from an earlier version retains it. Check that the problem is really an AC-3 decoder
- Check the track details. If your playback app displays audio codec information, confirm that the affected track is AC-3 or Dolby Digital. A silent file by itself does not establish a codec problem; Microsoft notes that playback errors can have other causes.
- Check the Windows release. Open Settings > System > About and look under Windows specifications. Version 24H2 is the change point for AC-3’s default inclusion.
- Check the PC’s history and bundled software. If Windows was upgraded from an earlier release, AC-3 may have been retained. If the PC was supplied with media or audio software, check the maker’s official support page for software for your exact model.
Microsoft’s codec-extension list describes extensions for the formats they name; it does not list an AC-3 Store extension. Installing HEVC or another video-format extension should not be treated as a way to add AC-3 audio decoding.

Choose a safe way to restore playback
Use the PC maker’s original media package if available
Search the manufacturer’s official support site using the computer’s exact model or serial number, and look for its original media or audio software. Install only a package offered for that device by the manufacturer. There is no universal OEM installer established here, and Microsoft does not provide a verified standalone AC-3 download in the cited guidance.
Use a player or decoder with explicit AC-3 support
If no system decoder is present, choose a media player or decoder only when its publisher’s official documentation explicitly says it supports AC-3. Confirm where the component operates: a player may decode AC-3 only inside that application, while a system-wide decoder may be available to multiple apps and can affect more of the system. Check the official publisher source, whether support is clearly documented, and the maintenance and compatibility trade-offs before installing. No specific third-party player or installer is validated here.

- Make sure the the plastic removed. And the Optical Cable is pushed in completely.
- TROUBLESHOOT: Signal from the TV goes into SPDIF (Optical), or Coxial input of the DA34 and The output of RCA or Headphones will go into your analog speakers or headphones. Make sure the power adapter is connect properly. And all the cables are inserted all the way in. If there is still no sound, please change the TV Audio out to PCM Only from the TV Menu.
Be cautious with codec packs
Microsoft warns that free codec packs found online can cause compatibility problems, serious playback issues, or system corruption. Prefer software from a trusted official provider, and create a Windows restore point before installing digital media components. Do not use unofficial repackaged installers or unverified scripts. What will not restore a missing decoder
- Re-enabling Windows Media Player Legacy: It is an optional Windows feature, but turning the player back on does not itself prove AC-3 decoding is available. Microsoft also says DVD playback is not included with Windows Media Player Legacy.
- Installing an unrelated format extension: Extensions add support for the specific formats they cover; Microsoft’s listed extensions do not offer AC-3.
- Buying a cable, speaker, or other audio accessory: Hardware that outputs sound cannot supply a missing software decoder.
If AC-3 still does not play
Once you have confirmed that a trusted player or decoder should handle AC-3, stop repeatedly installing codecs and troubleshoot the remaining possibilities. The file may be damaged, the player installation may be faulty, the app may not support the track in its current configuration, or the issue may be unrelated to codecs. Microsoft provides separate steps for Windows Media Player errors; for another app, consult that app publisher’s official troubleshooting documentation.
