A third sensible use is to keep it as an emergency spare—but it is not established as a universal Bluetooth remote for phones or computers.
1. Keep it as a spare for a compatible Google streaming device
Google documents replacement Voice Remote setup for Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer. That makes an old remote useful as a backup if the remote currently in use is lost or stops working. Compatibility depends on the specific device and remote; “Google TV” covers more than one product, so check the device model rather than assuming every Google TV device supports it. Google’s replacement-remote setup instructions cover the supported device families.

Pair it as a replacement
- Turn on the compatible Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer.
- Press and hold the button on the back of the streaming device for 5–10 seconds to start pairing mode.
- Insert two AAA batteries in the replacement remote, then follow the on-screen pairing instructions if it does not connect automatically.
2. Set up its TV or audio controls
The remote’s volume, power, and input buttons can be configured for a compatible TV, receiver, or soundbar. Setup happens through the Google streaming device: open the remote settings, choose the control setup for the relevant device, select its type and brand, and test the requested button. Google notes that some device models are unsupported, so treat this as a capability to test rather than a guarantee. Google’s control setup instructions explain the process.

3. Store it as an emergency backup
If you no longer use the remote every day, keep it somewhere accessible as a spare for a compatible Google streaming device. This is a practical backup use, not a separate control feature: it will help only if you have a device it can pair with. Label it with the streamer model it works with, if known, so you can check compatibility quickly when needed.
What an old Google TV remote should not be assumed to do
Do not count on it as a generic Bluetooth controller for a phone, computer, or unrelated device. Google’s Bluetooth instructions describe pairing accessories such as headphones or speakers with Google streaming devices; they do not document using the Voice Remote as a universal controller for arbitrary hosts.
