Prefer Google Play when the app is available there, leave Play Protect enabled, and find the steps to restore your phone’s built-in Home app before making the new launcher your default.
1. Check the developer and whether the app appears maintained
On the app listing, review the developer name, update information, rating, download count, and recent reviews. Look for patterns relevant to your needs—such as reports about crashes, missing features, or problems on your phone model—rather than treating one review as conclusive. Google recommends checking ratings, downloads, and individual reviews, but those signals are not proof of an app’s safety or quality. Google’s guidance on avoiding harmful apps explains what to look for.

2. Read Data safety alongside the privacy policy
For an app distributed on Google Play, open its listing, find Data safety, and select See details. Google says developers use this section to describe the sum of an app’s data collection and sharing across the versions distributed on Play. Google Play’s Data safety help describes the section and its scope.

Use the disclosure as a starting point, not an independent audit. It reflects developer-provided information and has exceptions: some on-device-only access and ephemeral processing need not be declared as data collection, and some data transfers need not be described as sharing. Practices may also vary by how you use the app, your region, and your age. Read the linked privacy policy too, and look for explanations that connect the data practices to specific launcher features.

3. Examine permissions and special-access requests
For each permission or special-access prompt, ask what feature needs it, whether you can decline, and whether a narrower option would still work. A request that does not make sense for the feature you want deserves a clear explanation before you proceed.
Installed-app inventory is treated as personal and sensitive information under Google Play policy. A launcher may have a legitimate reason to know which apps are available, but policy restricts broad QUERY_ALL_PACKAGES visibility to situations where broad awareness is necessary and a narrower query will not work. The policy also requires prominent disclosure and consent when sensitive-data use may fall outside a user’s reasonable expectations. These are developer requirements, not evidence that every app complies. Google Play’s user-data policy explains the relevant rules.

4. Choose the installation source carefully
Prefer Google Play when the launcher is available there. Google warns: “If you download apps from unknown sources, your device and personal information can be at risk.” Its Android guidance covers harmful apps and installation risks.
If you decide to install outside Play, verify that the download comes from the developer’s genuine site and that the app identity matches the one you intended to install. A successful installation does not establish that the app is safe; keep the added source risk in mind.

5. Leave Play Protect enabled
Google says Play Protect checks apps before they are downloaded from Play and scans the device for potentially harmful apps from other sources. It may warn you about an app, deactivate it, or remove it. Google Play Protect help describes these protections.
Play Protect is a detection and response layer—not a guarantee of safety, an endorsement of the launcher, or a judgment that its privacy practices suit you.

6. Confirm compatibility and how to switch back
Check that the launcher supports your Android version and the features you rely on. Before setting it as the default, find the device maker’s current instructions for selecting or restoring the built-in Home app. Android Help cautions, “Some of these steps may vary based on your device,” and its generic guidance does not establish one universal menu path for choosing a default launcher. Android Help’s home-screen guidance notes that device steps can vary.

If you are choosing between two apps, compare the same evidence for each rather than letting a long feature list make the decision for you.

A launcher with more customization is not automatically the better choice if its data practices or permission requests are unclear.
