Use the charger approved for your device, charge it on a hard surface away from anything flammable, and store batteries in a cool, dry place. Stop using a battery that becomes unusually hot, swells, leaks, smells odd, or makes hissing or popping sounds. If it is smoking or burning, leave the area and call emergency services; do not handle it or try to put out the fire.
Charge devices on a safe surface with the correct charger
Follow the device maker’s charging instructions and use the charger supplied with the device or a replacement the manufacturer explicitly approves. A charger marketed as “universal” is not necessarily compatible. If your charger is lost or damaged, confirm the replacement is suitable for your exact device model before connecting it. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) recommends using the charger that came with the device or one from a reputable supplier; its device safety handout specifies the manufacturer-provided charger.

- Charge on a hard, stable surface—not a bed or couch, and never under a pillow. Keep the device clear of blankets, paper, and other materials that could catch fire.
- Plug the charger directly into a wall outlet rather than an extension cord or multiplug adapter.
- Do not keep charging a device after it is fully charged. Household guidance from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) also advises against charging on soft furnishings or under bedding.
- Keep larger devices, such as e-bikes, away from doors and escape routes while charging.
Keep batteries away from heat and unsafe storage conditions
Charge and store batteries in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and anything flammable. Do not leave a battery or device in a hot car. When possible, store batteries at room temperature, as advised by the USFA’s battery safety guidance.

Take warning signs seriously
Stop using a battery if you notice an unusual odor, discoloration, excessive heat, a change in shape, or leakage. Cracks, bulging, hissing, popping, visible gas venting, or a temperature that keeps rising are also warning signs described by USFA. Do not open or attempt to repair a battery pack yourself; USFA’s handout says pack repairs should be handled by a certified repair facility.
If a battery is hot, smoking, venting, or otherwise appears damaged, keep clear and do not handle it. If it is safe to do so, move people away from the area. If there is fire, follow the emergency steps below.

If a battery catches fire, evacuate
The USFA’s instruction is direct: “If a lithium-ion battery fire occurs, don’t try to put it out. Evacuate and call 911 immediately.” Leave the area, warn others as you go, and call emergency services from a safe location. Do not carry a burning or smoking device outside, retrieve belongings, or return until responders say it is safe.

Choose devices carefully and dispose of batteries properly
When buying a device, USFA recommends considering products certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory and purchasing from a reputable retailer. Certification is not a guarantee that a product is right for every use. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) lists voluntary standards including UL 1642 for lithium batteries, UL 2743 for portable power packs, UL 1310 for Class 2 power units, and UL 62133 for portable sealed secondary cells and batteries. Check the device’s instructions and CPSC recall information as part of your purchase decision.

Do not put lithium-ion batteries in household trash or ordinary recycling. Use a local battery collection or recycling service, and check its acceptance rules with your local authority or the manufacturer. USFA’s handout advises taping battery ends and terminals to help prevent accidental discharge and fire when preparing batteries for collection, but handling directions can depend on battery condition and collector requirements. Follow the collector’s instructions; contact the manufacturer for guidance on a damaged battery.
