If your steering feels delayed in a PC racing game, first check whether the controller’s inputs register correctly in Windows or Steam. If they do, compare wired and wireless play, inspect the game’s input settings, then test frame pacing and display settings one at a time. This sequence helps distinguish controller or connection trouble from delay introduced by the game, PC, or display.
Start by identifying what feels delayed
“Input lag” can mean more than one thing: a game may read a button late, or the input may register promptly but take longer to appear on screen. Before changing settings, note whether the delay affects steering, throttle and brake, or every control; whether it happens in one game or several; and whether it appears alongside stutter. Also note your controller’s connection mode, Steam Input configuration, the game’s frame-rate behavior, and the display’s selected refresh rate. These observations help you compare changes; they are not latency measurements.

Check whether Windows or Steam receives your inputs
Test the sticks and buttons outside the racing game before adjusting graphics. Microsoft’s Windows controller guide describes testing from the device’s properties, and Steam provides a controller test at Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Input. The Windows guide is US-market oriented and notes that availability and features can vary by region.
- If inputs drop out, register inconsistently, or a stick moves when untouched, first check the controller’s charge, pairing, cable and port. Check for a controller firmware update or model-specific support from its manufacturer; persistent faults may indicate a hardware problem.
- If the test is clean but one game feels slow, focus on that game’s controller support, layout, dead zone and input settings.
A large steering dead zone or an unsuitable sensitivity curve can make steering feel unresponsive, but that alone does not show that input transmission is delayed.

Compare wired and wireless play
If your controller supports wired USB data, connect it directly to the PC with a data-capable cable that fits the controller. Compare it with wireless play in the same game, scene and settings, without changing other variables. A USB connection is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed latency improvement; not every cable carries data.
Microsoft says, “Most controllers — Xbox, PlayStation, and many third‑party options — support USB connections.” Check your controller’s connection requirements rather than assuming that a cable with the right connector will work for wired play. Microsoft’s Windows guide recommends trying another cable or port if Windows does not recognize the controller. Microsoft’s guide to connecting a controller to a PC covers its setup.

If the symptom changes on wired USB, reconnect wireless, check the controller’s charge and pairing, and disconnect any other device it is paired with. If relevant, reduce nearby Bluetooth-device congestion. Follow the manufacturer’s connection advice for your specific model. Steam’s 2026 documentation recommends the Puck for its Steam Controller; that product-specific recommendation should not be generalized to other controllers. Its documentation also lists Bluetooth and wired USB-C modes. Steam Controller connection guidance describes those options.

If the controller behaves differently on different USB ports, or the problem changes when other USB devices are connected, move it to another port and temporarily disconnect unnecessary devices or hubs. Steam describes some issues commonly called USB bandwidth problems as USB scheduling or contention issues; rearranging devices or changing ports can affect them. This is a targeted test for port-dependent behavior, not a universal fix. Steam’s USB troubleshooting article explains the issue.

Check the game’s controller layout and input software
Confirm that the racing game supports a gamepad and that its selected control preset matches your controller. If you launch the game through Steam, inspect its per-title controller or Steam Input configuration. Avoid stacking multiple remapping utilities while troubleshooting: first test with the simplest supported input path, then add any remapping layer back if needed.
For Steam Controller issues, Steam’s support guidance identifies the overlay, selected input style, other connected controllers or peripherals, and conflicting software as areas to test. Disconnect other input devices and disable overlays or suspected conflicting programs temporarily; restore them one at a time to find out whether one changes the behavior. The cited Steam guidance is legacy and product-specific, so its examples do not establish that a named program causes lag for all users or controllers. Steam’s controller troubleshooting guidance provides its diagnostic steps.

Check frame pacing, refresh rate and VSync
Watch for stutter or unstable frame delivery when steering feels delayed. In Windows, confirm that the display is set to its intended refresh rate. Refresh rate, measured in hertz, is not the same as the game’s frames per second: a display can be set to a particular refresh rate while the game delivers frames at a different or unstable rate.

In the affected game, test VSync and any available latency or presentation options one at a time. Pay attention to both control feel and image quality. Steam warns that disabling VSync can cause tearing or other visual artifacts, so turning it off is a trade-off to evaluate in that game, not a guaranteed fix. Steam’s VSync troubleshooting notes describe that visual consequence.

Windows 11’s optimizations for windowed games can reduce frame latency through a compatible flip-model path, but availability depends on compatible games and displays. That setting is about frame presentation; it does not by itself identify a controller-input problem. Microsoft’s Windows 11 windowed-game guidance explains the feature and its compatibility scope.
Use this order to narrow down the cause
- Test inputs outside the game. Use Windows device properties or Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Input. If input is faulty there, investigate charge, pairing, cable, port or controller hardware before changing graphics settings.
- Compare connection modes. If supported, compare direct wired USB data with wireless in the same game and conditions. Change only the connection mode.
- Check port dependence. If the wired result varies, try another USB port and temporarily remove unnecessary devices or hubs.
- Simplify the game’s input path. Verify its controller preset and, if relevant, test its per-title Steam Input setting without extra remappers or overlays.
- Inspect frame and display behavior. Look for stutter, confirm the display refresh rate, then test VSync or other presentation options separately.
Keep the changes that solve the problem without introducing a worse trade-off, such as tearing or unreliable connections. If the controller test is clean and the issue occurs in only one title, prioritize that game’s settings and input path. If the input test itself is inconsistent, stay focused on the controller and its connection.
Avoid unsupported quick fixes
There is no established universal wired-versus-Bluetooth latency ranking or generally applicable number of milliseconds saved for PC racing games. The available official guidance supports diagnosis, not a controller-to-screen benchmark across different controllers, games, PCs and displays. Avoid treating registry edits, controller overclocking, USB polling-rate overrides or disabling Windows GameInput services as proven general fixes based on anecdotes.
