Preventing leaks in a liquid-cooled server rack starts with knowing which parts carry facility water and which carry technology coolant, then designing for detection, isolation and safe service. Check coolant on the schedule and to the limits set by the equipment manufacturer and fluid supplier; there is no universal inspection interval or coolant specification for every direct liquid cooling (DLC) system.
Understand which parts of the system contain coolant
A common DLC arrangement uses a coolant distribution unit (CDU) to transfer heat between facility water and a separate technology cooling system (TCS). The TCS may include supply and return piping, row and rack manifolds, server cooling loops, hoses or tubes, valves, quick disconnects, sensors and controllers. The boundary varies by installation, so identify the fluid in each section before writing leak procedures or deciding which team responds. ASHRAE describes this architecture in its Chapter 20: Data Centers and Telecommunication Facilities.

- Facility-water side: The building’s water system serves the CDU or heat exchanger.
- Technology-cooling side: The TCS carries the selected coolant from the CDU through distribution piping to IT equipment and back.
These sides may have different fluids, operating conditions and maintenance requirements. A leak procedure that does not distinguish them can send staff to the wrong isolation point or lead them to apply the wrong handling instructions.
How do I prevent leaks in a liquid-cooled server rack?
Design for isolation and service
Arrange piping, valves and major components so a section can be isolated and replaced without undermining the system’s intended reliability. Select components for the application and use appropriately specified, quality materials. ASHRAE notes that failures of grooved couplings are rare but can be sudden and severe, so their selection and placement deserve deliberate engineering rather than assumption.

Quick disconnects can make server or rack service easier: appropriately selected units support disconnecting and reconnecting equipment without coolant escaping while other equipment remains in operation. Their suitability depends on the application, materials and design requirements; they are not a substitute for following the equipment maker’s service procedure.
Plan for where a leak will travel
For overhead piping connections above critical or costly equipment, ASHRAE’s 2021 paper, Emergence and Expansion of Liquid Cooling in Mainstream Data Centers, recommends drip pans with leak detection and drains piped to the floor. Coordinate pipe routing with power and network routes. A pan can help control where water goes, but it does not replace alarms, inspections or a response plan.

Water leak detection cable may be one component of a detection arrangement around a pan or other risk area. Check that the cable works with the facility’s controller and alarm inputs, meets wet-contact requirements, and can be installed and maintained as intended. A consumer sensor is not automatically suitable for a data-center monitoring system.
Choose the coolant and wetted materials together
Possible TCS fluids include water with additives, glycol-based fluids, refrigerants and dielectric fluids. ASHRAE advises considering compatibility with every wetted material alongside serviceability and maintenance needs. Coolant properties also affect heat transfer and pressure drop, so fluid selection belongs in the system design—not as a universal retrofit choice.

ASHRAE’s 2021 paper emphasizes planning an approved list of wetted materials for a closed system. Additive concentrations can change over time, affecting corrosion protection and the potential for bacterial growth. Confirm the fluid specification and compatible materials with the equipment manufacturer and coolant supplier.
What should I monitor for a coolant leak?
Use the measurements and leak sensors appropriate to the design, and trend the system’s normal conditions after commissioning. Depending on the installation, useful monitored conditions can include pressure, flow and temperature, alongside dedicated leak-detection points. Investigate changes using site procedures and the equipment manufacturer’s guidance; a change can indicate a leak or another system problem, but it is not by itself a diagnosis.

HPE describes its own DLC racks as having multiple leak-detection points and pressure, flow and temperature monitoring that can alert an operator to inspect. That is an example of one manufacturer’s design, not a universal sensor count, placement rule or alarm threshold. The applicable sources do not establish common alarm limits, a single leak-response sequence or one leak-detection cable specification for all DLC installations.

Document the relevant isolation valves, escalation contacts and service steps for each fluid section. When an alarm occurs, follow the site’s approved response and equipment-specific procedure rather than improvising a universal sequence. Ensure operators can identify whether the affected section is on the facility-water side or the technology-cooling side, and know who is authorized to isolate it.

How often should I check the coolant?
Follow the coolant supplier’s testing limits and the equipment manufacturer’s maintenance schedule. The sources do not establish a single sampling interval, pH target, inhibitor concentration, sample volume, replacement period or laboratory test panel that applies to all DLC systems. Keep records of the fluid in use, test results, maintenance and any corrective additions so changes can be evaluated against the system’s requirements.
HPE says annual coolant inspection is standard for its own DLC racks that use propylene glycol/water (PGW): a small sample is sent to a laboratory, and propylene glycol is added if its concentration has degraded. This is a manufacturer-specific example, not a general annual requirement for other fluids or equipment.
Keep coolant above the room dew point
Control coolant temperature so it remains above the room’s dew point; otherwise, condensation can form on cooled surfaces. ASHRAE identifies dew-point control as a key CDU function. The correct operating setpoint depends on facility conditions and the IT equipment’s supply-water requirements, so use the approved limits and controls for the particular installation rather than applying a generic temperature.

Use the correct pressure-test requirements
Do not turn historic pressure-test multipliers or examples into a field instruction. ASHRAE TC 9.9’s Water-Cooled Servers: Common Designs, Components, and Processes discusses differences among referenced IEC and ASME requirements and the role of local code authorities. The installer and responsible engineer should determine the current applicable standard, jurisdictional requirements, component pressure limits and approved test method for the specific work.
