To choose a VLC alternative, test the actual files and devices you use—not just their filename extensions. A video’s container, video and audio codecs, subtitle tracks, playback device, and player or client all affect whether it plays directly or needs conversion. For local files, mpv is a configurable option; for a browseable library across devices, consider Jellyfin or Plex.
What to check before choosing a player
An extension such as .mkv, .mp4, or .flac does not tell the whole compatibility story. A container can hold different video and audio streams, and a video may also include embedded or external subtitles. A player might handle the video but not the audio track or subtitle format, or a particular client device may lack support even when another device plays the same file.

Jellyfin’s codec support guide treats the container, video, audio, subtitles, and client platform as separate factors. Use a representative sample of your own files to check these combinations; the available documentation does not establish a controlled head-to-head test proving that alternatives universally support more formats than VLC. VideoLAN also lists extensive format support for VLC on its features page, while mpv documents broad format and subtitle support in its reference manual.
Choose the playback model that fits
| What you want | Option to evaluate | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Play local files with configurable controls | mpv | It offers command-line playback, configuration files, and customizable input, but the project says it has no official full GUI. See the mpv manual. |
| Browse a shared media library on multiple devices | Jellyfin | It has official clients for desktop, mobile, and TV systems. Playback compatibility still depends on the specific client and media combination. See Jellyfin and its codec support guide. |
| Use a media server and client setup | Plex | Plex distinguishes direct play from direct stream; what happens depends on media compatibility and the client. See Plex’s explanation of direct play and direct stream. |
Compare the operating systems and devices you need, support for the actual container and tracks in your files, setup effort, and whether you want local playback or a library interface. Server apps also require you to consider whether media plays directly or is remuxed or transcoded for a client.

Set up and test an alternative
- Make a small test set. Include one file that currently plays and several that represent your usual problem cases. Where relevant, include high-efficiency or newer video codecs, surround audio, external subtitles, alternate audio or subtitle tracks, and music files. Note the device and operating system used for each test.
- Pick local playback or a library. Evaluate mpv for local files and configurable playback. Choose Jellyfin or Plex if you want to browse a library from several devices. Jellyfin’s downloads page lists official clients; its project says no subscription is required for its server or official clients. That does not guarantee every client will play every format without conversion.
- Install using current project guidance. For mpv, consult its installation page for your platform. The project warns that most Windows and macOS binary packages are unofficial third-party builds; its first-party CI builds are mainly for testing. On Linux, packages and their status vary by distribution, so check both the current project guidance and your distribution’s instructions. For Jellyfin, select an official client for your target device from the downloads page. Installing a client is separate from setting up a Jellyfin server; use the project’s current quick-start instructions if you plan to host a library.
- Play every test file and check the tracks. Confirm picture, audio, subtitles, track selection, and seeking. Do not stop at seeing an image: try the alternate audio and subtitle tracks you rely on.
- For a server, check what playback path it uses. In Jellyfin, see whether an item direct-plays, is remuxed or direct-streamed, or is transcoded. An unsupported container or audio track may require remuxing or conversion; unsupported video may require video transcoding. Subtitle incompatibility can also lead to remuxing or subtitles being burned into the picture, which can make playback more demanding. Jellyfin describes its goal as to “Direct Play all media,” but its documentation also explains that unsupported combinations can be converted.
- Change settings only after identifying a failure. mpv supports configuration files and custom key bindings; its manual describes typical
mpv.confandinput.conffiles. Change one setting at a time and keep a note of the original value so you can undo it. The project says mpv has no official full GUI beyond its on-screen controller, so it may be a poor fit if you expect a conventional settings-heavy desktop interface.
If a file fails in VLC
First identify the file’s container, video codec, audio codec, and subtitle type, then check the support information for the installed player and device. This helps distinguish, for example, a video-decoding problem from an unsupported audio track or subtitle format.
For the specific image errors covered by VideoLAN’s Windows FAQ, try changing GPU-accelerated decoding: open Tools > Preferences > Input & Codecs, enable or disable hardware-accelerated decoding, save, and restart VLC. Treat this as a troubleshooting experiment for those documented Windows cases, not a general fix. The FAQ includes legacy references, so menu labels may differ in your installed version.

When to convert, and when not to
If a file works in one player or on one device but not another, the problem may be the specific combination of container, streams, subtitles, and client—not a universally unsupported format. For a library server, conversion can make a file playable for a client, but it may require transcoding rather than simple remuxing. Test the files you care about before converting a collection or switching players; neither an extension nor a broad format-support claim guarantees the behavior you need on a particular device.
