In a reported STEP-to-mesh failure, a global vertex weld merged coincident vertices across separate solids; triangles at part interfaces collapsed and disappeared. The practical safeguard is to keep welds scoped to individual solids and validate topology after combining or cleaning the assembly.
How a global weld can damage an assembly
A vertex weld merges vertices that lie within a tolerance. When the vertices belong to separate solids that merely touch, merging them changes more than their coordinates: it changes the mesh’s topology. Faces whose corners collapse to repeated vertices can become degenerate and be removed.

That distinction matters at assembly interfaces. Two parts can occupy the same location while still needing independent, closed surfaces. Concatenating their meshes and then welding all nearby vertices can erase interface triangles even though the assembly’s exterior silhouette remains plausible. A shaded preview is not proof that the output is closed or manifold.

What the reported incident describes
Amine Fakiri’s October 1, 2026 account describes a STEP assembly with 108 solids. The author says each solid tessellated as closed and manifold, but combining the results and applying a global weld caused 84 triangles at touching interfaces to disappear. These counts and the causal sequence are the author’s report and have not been independently verified.

The general mechanism is consistent with Autodesk’s 3ds Max 2012 Vertex Weld documentation: welding can combine vertices from separate elements, and associated faces or edges are often removed. This explains how a conversion can finish successfully while its resulting topology is damaged; it does not independently verify the particular incident.
Why the weld threshold matters
The weld threshold determines which vertices are close enough to merge. In Autodesk’s documented 3ds Max modifier, the threshold is measured in scene units and the merged vertex is placed at the average position of the welded vertices. Autodesk warns, “If the threshold is set too high, the mesh will begin to deform.” Its documented default is 0.1 for that modifier only; it is not a universal setting for other software, units, or conversion pipelines.

Use a threshold appropriate to the model’s units and scale, and test it on a copy. Increasing it until a model merely appears connected can remove details or deform geometry. A threshold that is sensible for one application or model scale may be unsuitable for another.

- Keep an untouched source. Record the expected solid or component count and useful input mesh statistics before conversion so you have a baseline for comparison.
- Tessellate and validate solids individually. Check each solid before assembly concatenation. This helps distinguish a defect introduced during tessellation from one introduced by later assembly-level processing.
- Keep weld scope per solid. Weld within each solid when cleanup is needed. Do not apply one proximity weld across independent assembly solids unless the intended result is a single joined topology.
- Validate after combining or cleaning. Compare solid or component counts, vertex and triangle counts, and boundary counts with the baseline. Look for degenerate faces and check manifoldness and orientation rather than relying on the conversion completing without an error.
- Inspect problem locations and boundaries. Boundary visualization can reveal openings hidden inside an assembly. Autodesk Alias Mesh Repair, documented for 2025, exposes triangle, vertex, boundary, and component information and checks degeneracy, manifoldness, orientation, self-intersection, and folded edges. Its repair operations may remove troublesome triangles, so preserve the original and review changes.
- Check the result at the conversion boundary. A downstream CAD application or slicer may reveal a defect, but validating immediately after conversion makes it easier to locate which processing stage introduced it.
What to check when the preview looks right but the solid fails
- Unexpected count changes: Compare the number of solids or components before and after combine and cleanup stages.
- New boundaries: Check whether boundary counts increased after welding or whether boundaries appear at part contacts.
- Face loss or degeneracy: Compare triangle counts and inspect any reported degenerate faces, especially after an assembly-level weld.
- Scope and tolerance: Confirm whether the operation welded across separate components and whether its threshold is expressed in the model’s actual scene units.
- Visual-only approval: Treat a plausible exterior preview as insufficient evidence of closed, manifold topology.
Autodesk’s 3ds Max STL support guidance, dated October 8, 2023, describes disabling import-time welding and welding manually afterward as a way to address slow imports. That is a workflow option for that import context, not a direct fix for cross-solid topology loss: the scope of any later weld still needs to be controlled.

For geometry prepared for Direct3D rendering, Microsoft’s DirectXMesh documentation describes vertex-weld and clean/validate functions. Their existence does not make a rendering-oriented cleanup equivalent to preserving independently closed CAD assembly solids; validate against the topology your downstream use requires.
