CHIP named NordVPN its 2026 test winner, while TechRadar also recommended it overall; those are reviewers’ conclusions, not guarantees of privacy, speed or ongoing streaming access. If you need a German IP, check that your chosen plan includes a German location: TechRadar reported that the free Proton VPN plan it reviewed did not.
Which VPN should you choose for Germany?
For a general-purpose starting point, NordVPN has the strongest shared endorsement in the cited comparisons: CHIP named it its test winner, and TechRadar recommended it overall. Choose based on the job you need done, though; neither ranking makes one service best for every reader.

- German IP and home-country services while traveling: Compare German location availability and the specific service you want to use. TechRadar reported successful tests with some German streaming platforms for NordVPN and ExpressVPN, but access can change.
- Privacy features: Proton VPN is one of the candidates included by both publications. Review the provider’s current policy and the scope and date of any independent audit rather than treating a review ranking as proof.
- Simplicity: TechRadar highlighted ExpressVPN for ease of use.
- Customization or budget: TechRadar described Private Internet Access (PIA) as a budget and customization option, including split tunneling and multi-hop.
- CHIP’s additional recommendation: Mullvad appears among CHIP’s recommendations, but the cited material does not establish detailed Germany-specific locations, streaming performance or price for it.
These are publication-specific findings. CHIP says its test center assessed nine VPN services for security, privacy, ease of use, features and speed; results first appeared in June 2026, and the article is dated July 16, 2026. TechRadar’s Germany comparison is dated February 6, 2026. Their methods and priorities differ, so their lists should not be read as a single controlled head-to-head ranking. What to compare before subscribing
A German server location, a privacy claim and a low introductory price answer different questions. Check the specific plan and the use you have in mind.

- Location and IP address: Confirm the service offers a German location on the plan you will use. If a particular city matters, check that city too; availability can change.
- Streaming compatibility: A German IP may be useful for home-country services while abroad, but having German servers does not guarantee a platform will work. Compatibility is service-specific and may change over time.
- Privacy evidence: Read the provider’s privacy policy and look for independent audits, including what they covered and when. The cited comparisons do not independently establish each provider’s audit scope or current privacy practices.
- App protections: Check for a kill switch and understand what it does if the VPN connection drops. Consider app usability and any other controls you will actually use.
- Speed: Treat review speed results as meaningful only alongside the test conditions. CHIP and TechRadar use their own methods; the cited material does not establish aligned conditions for a direct speed ranking.
- Devices and total cost: Compare simultaneous connection limits, subscription length, full charge, renewal price and cancellation terms. A low monthly figure may depend on a longer term or an offer.
CHIP gives an approximate annual cost range of €35 to €100 in its 2026 article; it is that article’s estimate, not a universal market rate. TechRadar’s February 6, 2026 summary lists example prices in US dollars, including NordVPN from $3.09 per month. These are volatile examples, not Germany-specific euro quotes or confirmed renewal charges. Check the provider’s current checkout terms for the plan and billing period you select.
Does a VPN give you a German IP address?
It can, if the provider offers a German VPN location on your plan and you connect to it. Websites will generally see the VPN endpoint’s IP address rather than the device’s ordinary connection IP, which can make the connection appear to come from Germany. This is useful when traveling if a service you use expects a German connection.

TechRadar reported German locations for several paid services in its comparison: Berlin, Frankfurt and Hamburg for NordVPN; Frankfurt and Nuremberg for ExpressVPN; and Frankfurt and Berlin for PIA. It also reported paid German locations for Proton VPN. These are the reviewer’s reported details, not a guarantee of current city availability. The same review said the free Proton VPN plan it tested had no German server and no manual location selection, so it did not provide a German IP in that review. Check current plan terms before relying on any location.

Possibly, but no provider’s German server list guarantees access to a particular streaming platform. Services can change how they detect VPN connections, and results can vary by platform, server and time.

TechRadar reported that its tests found favorable access results for NordVPN and successful access to some German platforms with ExpressVPN. Those are observations from the reviewer’s tests, not a promise that every German service will work or continue to work. Before subscribing mainly for streaming, check the provider’s current terms and cancellation policy, and avoid assuming a free plan includes a German location.
What a VPN protects—and what it does not
The German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) describes a VPN client as a way to establish cryptographically secured data transmission between a local user and a remote trusted user or network over a potentially insecure network. Its VPN-client profile, version 3.0, is dated July 26, 2024, and specifically concerns protection for information classified VS-NfD (for official use only). That government profile is not a blanket endorsement of consumer VPN products. Read the BSI VPN-client profile (PDF).

A consumer VPN secures the connection between your device and the VPN endpoint; it does not make you anonymous in an absolute sense. The VPN provider becomes a party you must trust with traffic passing through its service. Websites and apps may still identify you through account logins, cookies or other tracking, and your device and the destination service still matter. A VPN does not replace sound account security or device protection.
What about VPN legality and IP-address retention in Germany?
The cited official material does not establish a comprehensive legal conclusion about every kind of consumer VPN use in Germany. The BSI profile concerns a government security context, not general consumer legality.

In an announcement dated April 22, 2026, the German federal government said the cabinet had approved a draft that would require internet access providers to retain IP addresses for three months. That announcement describes a draft, not proof that it later became law. It is about proposed retention by internet access providers; it does not establish that a VPN makes a user untraceable.
