Its developer says it disables Apple Intelligence, removes downloaded models and blocks them from downloading again. That can free storage, but it also disables a wide range of Apple Intelligence features, and the amount of space recovered varies. The project has not been independently audited for this article.
What RemoveMacAI does
According to the project’s README, RemoveMacAI is available as a native app and a command-line tool. Its stated approach is to put restrictions in a configuration profile that the user approves in System Settings, remove models through Apple’s asset service, and redirect later model downloads to a closed local port.

The project says the process leaves System Integrity Protection (SIP) enabled and does not modify /System. Those are the developer’s descriptions of the tool’s behavior, not the result of an independent security audit. RemoveMacAI is unofficial; the cited material does not establish Apple’s endorsement.

Check compatibility before using it
- Hardware: Apple silicon is required, according to the project.
- Operating system: The README lists macOS 27 as supported and macOS 26 and earlier as unsupported.
- Build-specific support: The project says it tested macOS 27.0 and requires version 0.2.3 or later for macOS 27.0.1.
These requirements can change as the project and macOS evolve. Check the current README and release notes against your exact macOS build before proceeding.

Which features stop working
Removing Apple Intelligence models is not a storage-only change. The project lists the following Apple features as affected:
- Siri and Writing Tools
- Genmoji and Image Playground
- The ChatGPT extension
- Summaries, Mail smart replies and inline predictions
- Spatial Photos and Photos Clean Up
- Xcode predictive code completion
- Visual Intelligence and natural-language Calendar editing
- Shortcuts’ Use Model action
Third-party apps that use Apple’s Foundation Models framework are also affected, according to the project. Apple’s macOS 27 developer documentation describes that framework and its connection to the on-device model powering Apple Intelligence.

The project says dictation continues to work because its speech models are separate. Do not assume that other features or app integrations will behave as before: configuration profiles, restriction keys and system services can change, and the effects on macOS or third-party apps are not established in advance. 9to5Mac also highlights those uncertainties in its October 5, 2026 coverage.
How much storage might it free?
There is no universal recovery figure. Apple said its latest Apple Intelligence models can require up to 14 GB on newer Macs, as reported by 9to5Mac on October 5, 2026. That is an upper-bound statement about model requirements—not a promise that RemoveMacAI will free 14 GB on a particular Mac.

Reports describe the project’s recovery claim as around 12 GB or more, but that amount has not been independently measured as a result that applies to every machine. Ars Technica reported a possible figure above 30 GB in some cases, relaying The Verge; it should likewise be treated as a reported possibility, not typical usage. Your actual recovery depends on what is installed on your Mac. macOS Storage settings may continue to count removed models until the operating system deletes the released files on its own schedule, according to the project’s README.
How to use it and undo the change
The project documents the command removemacai revert for reversing changes made with the command-line tool. Its native app also has a control to undo everything. Follow the current README for installation and use instructions; the available documentation does not establish one installation path that is appropriate for every release.

The project says the configuration profile persists across macOS updates, although an update can reset some other settings. Before changing your system, make sure you understand the profile approval and recovery steps in the instructions for the exact version you plan to use.

- Consider it if you have a supported Mac, want to remove the downloaded models, and accept losing the listed Apple Intelligence functions and some related app capabilities.
- Skip it if you rely on those features, need predictable storage recovery, or are not comfortable relying on an unofficial utility that configures system restrictions.
- Verify first if your macOS build or the tool version differs from the ones listed as supported. Apple may change system services or restrictions in future releases.
For further context on the tool’s stated function and risks, see Ars Technica’s October 5, 2026 report. Open-source availability and the project’s claim that SIP remains enabled do not substitute for an independent security review.
