Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Keep feature-flag changes in an audit trail or low-urgency notification channel; page the on-call engineer only when an alert signals an urgent, actionable symptom or likely user impact. A flag change can help explain an error spike, but the event alone does not establish that users are affected—or that someone must respond immediately.
How do I stop feature flag changes from paging the on-call team?
Separate three things that are often wired together: configuration changes, flag evaluations, and service-health alerts. A creation, toggle, targeting edit, variant change, or rollout adjustment is an administrative event. An evaluation records how the application used a flag. An alert should indicate a condition that warrants a human response.

- Evaluation telemetry: send it to the appropriate analytics or observability destination.
- Paging alerts: trigger these from actionable symptoms such as elevated errors, latency, or availability problems—not from every administrative mutation.
Google SRE’s Incident Management Guide says, “Alerts that cannot be acted upon by an on-caller generate noise.” Its guidance favors actionable, symptom-based alerting: alert on what is happening to the service or its users, rather than treating every change as an incident.

Should a flag toggle trigger an alert?
It can trigger a change notification, but it should not automatically trigger an on-call page. Notify a team when the information is useful for awareness or review; page only when there is an urgent condition that requires prompt action. A flag update may be routine, intentional, and harmless. Conversely, a genuine regression after a toggle can still warrant a page—the change event is context, not a reason to suppress a real symptom.
How do I keep an audit trail without spamming Slack or PagerDuty?
Choose a durable record for changes and a separate route for urgent alerts. A chat message is convenient for awareness, but should not be the only audit record unless its retention and access controls meet your requirements. Preserve the flag and environment, and, where the product exposes them, the actor, timestamp, and before/after values or a diff.

GO Feature Flag documents a separation between notifiers, which report configuration changes, and exporters, which send flag-evaluation results. Its notifier documentation lists Slack, Discord, Microsoft Teams, webhook, and log options; check the deployed version and configuration before relying on a particular destination or behavior. See GO Feature Flag’s notifier documentation and its integrations overview.
For webhook-based change records, GO Feature Flag documents an HTTP POST when a configuration change is detected, with added, deleted, and updated flags in the payload; updated flags include old and new values. It also documents an optional HMAC signature when a secret is configured. Validate the signature and payload against the version you deploy, and confirm your receiver checks the signature as intended. These fields and protections are product-specific, not a universal feature-flag event schema. Details are in the webhook notifier documentation.

What to retain in a change record
- Flag name and environment or project scope.
- Change time and actor, when available.
- Action taken and relevant old/new values or a diff, if exposed.
- A link or identifier responders can use to find the related dashboard, deployment, or incident.
How can I tell whether a feature flag change caused an error spike?
Correlate the change timestamp with user-facing signals, then investigate rather than assuming causation. Review error rate, latency, availability, or the service objective relevant to the affected feature. Check the affected environment and cohort, compare the timing and scope of the change with the symptom, and look for other plausible causes such as a deployment or dependency failure.
A temporal match is a useful lead, not proof. Keep change events visible in dashboards or incident timelines so responders can test whether the flag update aligns with the onset of a regression. Keep the page condition tied to a meaningful service symptom and tune it to avoid short-lived flapping. If a brief threshold crossing does not require intervention, require the condition to persist for an appropriate duration before paging. Group duplicate alerts, route related signals together, and use inhibition or suppression for dependent alerts where it is safe to do so.
Best Value
Suppression must clear when its triggering condition ends; otherwise a later, independent incident can be hidden. Google SRE discusses duration requirements, deduplication, inhibition, and suppression in its alerting guidance, monitoring workbook, and monitoring systems guidance.
- Route routine mutations away from paging. Send them to the audit log or a low-urgency team channel.
- Keep paging rules symptom-based. Require evidence of an urgent condition that someone can act on.
- Reduce duplicate or transient alerts carefully. Use grouping, deduplication, inhibition, or duration requirements where appropriate, and check that suppression expires when its condition clears.
- Review page outcomes. Remove alerts that repeatedly create noise without prompting action, while checking that changes have not concealed a real user-impacting incident.
What should a safe rollout and review process check?
Use the change record as investigation context, not as a blanket reason to silence monitoring. After changing routing or alert rules, review whether the pages that remain are actionable and whether suppression behaved as intended. Also check whether a real incident was missed. If a page did not call for action, adjust the alert; if a flag change coincided with a real regression, retain the evidence and respond to the symptom.
Quick Recap
- Are configuration mutations distinguishable from evaluation events and health alerts?
- Can responders identify the flag, environment, actor, time, and before/after context available in the product?
- Can responders see change events alongside relevant user-facing metrics?
- Do duplicate-alert controls expire correctly, and do paging conditions still surface genuine incidents?
