Wait for the page’s fonts to settle, then verify that the specific font faces your baseline requires actually loaded before taking a screenshot. document.fonts.ready is a readiness signal—not proof that every declared or intended font succeeded. Decide whether a missing custom font should fail the test or trigger a deliberate, stable fallback, and assert that policy explicitly.
Why waiting for fonts is not enough
The browser’s CSS Font Loading API exposes a document-level FontFaceSet through document.fonts. Its ready promise fulfills after loading and layout operations for fonts used by the document have completed. Individual faces have their own statuses, including loading, loaded and failed. These are distinct facts: the page can finish its relevant font work without every declared face having loaded. For example, the set of faces used can differ from the set declared in CSS, including with font-display: optional. See MDN’s CSS Font Loading API reference and Document: fonts property.

Consequently, awaiting document.fonts.ready helps avoid capturing during a font transition, but a passing visual test also needs to check the required faces and the intended rendering policy. A completed network wait is not evidence that the browser rendered the intended font.
Choose the rendering policy your baseline should enforce
Require the custom font
Use this policy when the baseline is meant to represent the branded or otherwise required face. Treat a missing or failed required face as a test failure, and report which family, weight and style were expected. Do not quietly turn a failed font request into a passing test: that can conceal a real asset or delivery regression.
#1 Best Overall
Allow a deterministic fallback
If fallback rendering is acceptable, specify a stable fallback available in the test environment and capture and compare that rendering consistently. The fallback is then the expected state, not an incidental result of a transient load. Keep the page state that uses the relevant text in the test; conditional or lazy font use may otherwise go unexamined.
A practical Playwright sequence
- Navigate using the application’s real readiness condition. A generic navigation load state may not cover application-specific rendering.
- Trigger the relevant page state. Ensure the text that uses the font is present and visible so its font faces are actually needed.
- Wait for font readiness with a bounded timeout. If it stalls, capture diagnostic context rather than waiting indefinitely.
- Inspect and assert the required faces. Decide whether each required face must be
loaded, or whether the test intentionally accepts a specified fallback. - Capture only after the policy passes. Use the same browser version, operating system or container, installed fonts and font assets for baseline generation and comparison.
For example, this diagnostic pattern waits for readiness and collects document font statuses. Adapt the family and required weights to your page; the snippet is not a universal assertion because it does not decide which faces your test requires.

await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
const fontState = await page.evaluate(() => ({
status: document.fonts.status,
faces: [...document.fonts].map(({ family, weight, style, status }) => ({
family, weight, style, status,
})),
}));
// Assert the specific required faces and expected fallback policy here.
Put the readiness wait inside the test framework’s bounded operation or add an explicit timeout around it. On timeout, include the browser and version, expected family and weight/style, overall document.fonts.status, per-face statuses and available resource-failure details. The API provides readiness and face status; this diagnostic reporting is practical test design, not a guarantee that every browser exposes a single complete network-error record.

Playwright defines networkidle as having no network connections for at least 500 ms, and its documentation discourages using that state as a testing readiness assertion in favor of web assertions. Even when the condition occurs, it does not establish that the intended font face loaded or that the page is rendering with it. Use an assertion about font state and the page’s expected result instead. See the Playwright Page API.

Control font delivery and the test environment
Font delivery can involve more than one request. Google Fonts documents a sequence in which the browser requests generated CSS tailored to its user agent and then downloads the appropriate font resource. When investigating a missing face, inspect both the stylesheet response and the font-file request rather than assuming that a successful CSS request proves the font arrived. Google also describes browser differences while fonts load: Chrome and Safari may temporarily show blank space for text using an unloaded font, while Firefox may first display a default font and then re-render. Those examples describe behaviors on Google’s technical page, not a guarantee for every current browser version. See Google Fonts technical considerations.
- Pin the browser/runtime used for both baseline and comparison.
- Keep the operating system or container and installed fonts consistent.
- Where reproducibility matters, use controlled font assets and ensure the test environment can reach them.
- Record the expected family, weight and style alongside the test’s rendering policy.
These controls reduce environment drift; they do not replace checking whether required font faces actually loaded.

The readiness wait times out
First distinguish a genuinely pending or failed font from a screenshot-preparation hang. Record the browser/runtime version and inspect the font CSS and file requests. Then check whether the failure reproduces with the project’s exact browser and environment. Do not remove the font wait blindly: skipping it does not repair font state and may produce a different screenshot.
The wait completes but the screenshot uses a fallback
Inspect the face statuses and verify the expected family, weight and style are actually used by the text under test. Check both stylesheet and font-file delivery, and consider whether the face was never used in the tested page state. A fulfilled readiness promise alone does not assert that a particular custom face succeeded.
A font failure is being hidden
Do not convert all font failures to success or suppress font errors without a policy-based reason. If a fallback is intended, make it deterministic and test that outcome; if the custom face is required, fail with enough context to identify the missing face.
Linux WebKit screenshot preparation hangs
A Playwright issue opened September 29, 2026, reports a Linux WebKit screenshot timeout while waiting for fonts with Playwright 1.63.0 and bundled WebKit 26.6 revision 2359. The report describes a successful 1.60.0 control in its setup, but does not establish the cause, the first affected version or a general fix. Its author also reports that bypassing the screenshot font wait allowed a diagnostic capture but did not repair font state; a later ordinary capture timed out again. Treat this as a version- and environment-specific issue report, not a general Playwright defect. Verify against your exact runtime and check the issue for updates before adopting a workaround.
