Test a tablet layout by rendering the page at explicit tablet viewport sizes, comparing each capture with a reviewed reference screenshot, and investigating differences before accepting any baseline change. Playwright Test can automate repeatable comparisons; Chrome DevTools is useful for exploring responsive breakpoints and taking manual captures. Neither desktop emulation nor a screenshot alone proves that a page behaves correctly on every physical tablet.
Choose tablet sizes that match your site
Start with the tablet widths and orientations your project intends to support. Check the CSS media queries and design requirements that can change the layout: a breakpoint might alter navigation, columns, spacing, or controls well before a device reaches a commonly labeled tablet width.

Chrome DevTools includes a 768-pixel-wide Tablet preset, but it is a starting point, not a universal definition of tablet. Test the widths around your own breakpoints as well as representative portrait and landscape compositions. A layout can pass at one width and still fail immediately before or after a breakpoint.

Write down the exact viewport dimensions and orientation you intend to test. Also note device properties that matter to the page, such as touch capability, user agent, and device-pixel ratio (DPR). Use the same values whenever you create or compare a baseline. Playwright supports device presets and explicit viewport overrides; DevTools lets you set a responsive viewport and reveal or trigger breakpoints. Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools.

Turn on the device toolbar, then choose the Tablet preset or enter the project’s exact width and height in responsive mode.

Set portrait or landscape dimensions explicitly. Inspect the layout at the widths around relevant CSS breakpoints, not just at the preset size.

Check the visible composition: navigation, text wrapping, columns, images, overlays, and controls. Exercise touch-dependent interactions where relevant.

Capture a screenshot from DevTools for a manual before-and-after review. For a repeatable test suite, use an automated baseline workflow such as Playwright instead.
Device mode simulates mobile use on a desktop; it does not run the page on tablet hardware and cannot reproduce every hardware characteristic. Chrome’s guidance says, “When in doubt, your best bet is to actually run your page on a mobile device.” Attribute that guidance to Chrome DevTools documentation, not to a named individual. Use a physical tablet when the behavior in question depends on actual hardware or browser interaction.
Automate screenshot comparisons with Playwright
Playwright Test’s expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() compares a rendered capture with a stored reference. On the first run it creates the reference; on later runs it reports visual differences. Before saving a new reference, Playwright waits for two consecutive screenshots to match, which helps avoid capturing a page while it is still changing. Review and commit approved reference images with the test code. See the Playwright visual comparisons documentation.

Install and configure a project
In an existing Node.js project, install Playwright Test and its browser binaries:

The following example assumes the generated configuration includes a Chromium project and that the page is served locally at http://127.0.0.1:3000. Adjust the URL, viewport, page path, and project name to match your application.

npx playwright test tests/tablet.spec.ts --project=chromiumThe first run creates a baseline image for review. Subsequent runs compare against it. Playwright stores snapshots alongside the test files, typically in a platform-specific snapshot directory. Check the generated diff when a test fails; do not update the baseline merely to make the failure disappear.
Add orientation and breakpoint coverage
Keep one test per meaningful viewport so a failing capture identifies the affected composition. For example, add a second test with a landscape viewport and a distinct snapshot name, or parameterize a small matrix of project-specific sizes. Avoid treating 768 pixels as the only tablet case: include widths near the CSS breakpoints that can change the layout.
For a full-page comparison, set fullPage: true. Use viewport-only captures when the question concerns the first screen and its tablet composition; choose full-page captures when below-the-fold structure, sticky elements, or long-page layout is part of the check. Full-page and viewport captures test different things, so choose the scope intentionally.
Choose browser coverage deliberately
Playwright supports Chromium, WebKit, and Firefox projects, as well as selected branded Chrome and Edge channels. Run the browsers your site claims to support, and keep the browser build consistent between baseline creation and later comparisons. A screenshot from one browser engine is not evidence that another engine renders identically. See Playwright browser configuration.

Keep captures stable without hiding defects
Visual differences are useful only when they reflect the page rather than unrelated changes in the capture environment. Keep the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, and headless or headed mode consistent where possible. A change to any of these can affect rendering and may require investigation before you decide whether a baseline should change.

Animations: Disable or wait for animations when the test is about layout rather than motion. Playwright’s screenshot assertion supports animation handling.

Changing content: Timestamps, rotating banners, personalized content, and live data can produce noisy diffs. Use stable test data or targeted masking where the changing region is not under test.

Styles and masks: Playwright supports screenshot options for masking elements and applying styles. Exclude only content irrelevant to the specific check; masking a region that contains the layout under review can conceal a real regression.

Loading: Wait for the page and its important content to be ready before capture. If images or fonts load late, a screenshot taken too early may differ from the final layout.
Playwright documents these controls and the visual comparison workflow in its screenshot testing guide. Keep the control choices in the test so later runs use the same conditions.
Review differences and update baselines deliberately

Run the same test with the same browser project and capture configuration used to create the reference.

Open the actual image, expected image, and diff for a failure. Determine whether the difference is a regression, an intentional design change, or capture noise.

Check whether the changed region matters to the test. A masked or suppressed region should not be used to ignore a defect the test is meant to catch.

If the visual change is intended, regenerate the reference using Playwright’s snapshot update option, review the new image, and commit it with the change that caused it. For example, run

If the change is unintended, fix the page or stabilize the test conditions; keep the approved baseline unchanged.
A baseline is a reviewed expectation, not an unquestionable source of truth. Updating it without inspecting the difference converts a regression into the new expected output.

The baseline fails after a browser or operating-system change: Confirm the browser project, browser build, operating system, and headed/headless mode match the baseline environment. If the environment change is intentional, inspect the diffs and approve new references rather than assuming every difference is harmless.

The screenshot changes from run to run: Look for animation, live content, late-loading resources, or personalized responses. Stabilize test data and timing, then use animation controls or narrowly scoped masks only where appropriate.

The page looks right at 768 pixels but breaks elsewhere: Add cases around the application’s actual CSS breakpoints and test both orientations that matter. The DevTools Tablet preset is not a complete viewport matrix.

The screenshot shows an incomplete page: Wait for the relevant page content and assets to load before asserting the screenshot. If the test specifically covers lazy-loaded content, make sure it has been brought into view or otherwise loaded before capture.

A diff appears after changing capture scope: Check whether the test changed from viewport to full-page capture, or vice versa. The captured area is part of the test definition; keep it consistent with the question being tested.

Emulation passes but a tablet interaction still fails: Reproduce the issue on a physical tablet when touch, browser UI, hardware, or another device-specific behavior could be responsible. Desktop emulation cannot answer every hardware question.
