To prevent clipping on a 24/7 YouTube radio stream, find and lower gain at the first point in the signal chain that distorts, then place OBS’s Limiter last in the relevant filter chain as a safety ceiling. Test loud tracks and transitions, watch OBS’s peak meter, and record and listen to a representative run before leaving the stream unattended. A limiter can control later peaks; it cannot repair audio that was already distorted upstream.
What clipping is—and what a limiter can and cannot do
In digital audio, 0 dBFS is the full-scale ceiling. OBS says the final signal it records or streams must remain below 0 dBFS to avoid clipping distortion. OBS can process signals above 0 dBFS internally in floating point, but that does not make an over-level recorded or streamed output safe. OBS’s Audio Mixer Technical Details explains the distinction.

Clipping can begin before the signal reaches OBS: in a music file or player, a device output, a mixer or interface, or software processing. Lowering OBS’s final output will not make an already clipped source clean. A limiter is a peak-control stage, not a repair tool and not the same thing as integrated loudness normalization.
Trace the signal from source to stream
Check each stage in order, listening at the earliest available point and then through OBS monitoring. The first point where the sound becomes distorted is the place to correct gain.

- Everything in the box: Includes Pro Tools Intro+, Ableton Live Lite, Cubase LE, and Hitmaker Expansion: a suite of essential effects, powerful software instruments, and easy-to-use mastering tools
- Music file and player: Play the actual file and inspect the player or device output. If it is already distorted, lower the player or source level and check whether the file itself is damaged or clipped.
- Hardware: If the audio passes through a mixer, interface, or other device, check its input and output levels. Reduce gain at an overloaded hardware stage before compensating elsewhere.
- Operating system and application: Check system output and application volume controls, along with any routing or processing in the playback setup.
- OBS source: Watch the source meter and listen through OBS monitoring. OBS notes that its input indicator is after source filters but before the volume fader. To inspect the raw input level, disable source filters while diagnosing.
- OBS mix and output: Balance source faders and the master mix so the final recorded or streamed signal stays below full scale. Do not push the mix into the ceiling and rely on a limiter to hide poor gain staging.
OBS’s mixer guide, dated April 3, 2026, describes the mixer’s indicators and monitoring behavior: Audio Mixer Guide.
Use the OBS meters to catch brief peaks
The main moving meter bar shows peak level. Its top peak indicator holds the loudest reading for 20 seconds, so check it after each loud track, transition, or alert rather than judging only from a quiet stretch. The black VU-style indicator is a short-window, loudness-related reading; it is not the peak ceiling. These meter descriptions are in the OBS Audio Mixer Guide.

OBS’s technical page identifies -20 dBFS as its Alignment Level and -9 dBFS as its Permitted Maximum Level meter convention. These are OBS meter references, not a YouTube live loudness specification or a universal target for music. The same page notes that some PPM readings, including OBS’s, may understate peaks by 3 dB, while also describing OBS’s peak-hold indicator as a way to read peaks. Keep those separate contexts in mind; do not treat the 3 dB note as evidence that every OBS peak reading is wrong. See OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details (dated February 13, 2022).
Set up the OBS Limiter as a last-stage safeguard
- In OBS, open the relevant audio source’s filters and add the built-in Limiter filter.
- Put the Limiter last in that source’s filter chain. Any later gain-raising filter can undermine its ceiling. OBS’s Limiter Filter documentation explicitly recommends placing it last.
- OBS documents a default threshold of -6.00 dB and release of 60 ms. Treat these as software defaults to evaluate against your actual mix, not as mandatory settings for every station, genre, or routing setup.
- Play the loudest representative material and listen for pumping, dulling, or other unwanted changes while checking the peak meter. If the limiter has to work constantly, revisit upstream gain and source balance instead of treating the limiter as the primary level control.
Do not confuse the limiter’s threshold with an integrated loudness target. The available OBS documentation does not establish a YouTube requirement such as -14 LUFS for preventing clipping. AES guidance discusses limiting frequent peaks by no more than 1 dB before final encoding as a starting point when peaks cause audible distortion or decoder artifacts, and says listening remains the final judge; that is general internet-audio distribution guidance, not a YouTube-specific live rule. - PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Test the whole 24/7 playback cycle before going live
Use the same scene, playback route, devices, and OBS filters intended for the unattended broadcast. A useful test includes the material and transitions most likely to produce peaks:
- loud tracks and dense bass or transient-heavy passages;
- station IDs, alerts, and other inserted audio;
- crossfades, source changes, and scene changes, if your setup uses them;
- the start of playback and any handoff between sources.
Record a representative run in OBS and listen through the beginning, loudest material, and transitions before leaving the stream unattended. Monitor early in the chain as well as through OBS; a clean-looking final meter cannot undo distortion introduced earlier.
