How to Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning While Tailgating

Keep vehicle exhaust and fuel-burning equipment from creating a carbon monoxide hazard while tailgating, and know what to do if exposure is suspected.

Prevent carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning by keeping fuel-burning equipment out of enclosed spaces, placing any generator outdoors at least 20 feet from buildings and openings, and ventilating a vehicle properly if its tailgate is open. CO is odorless and colorless, so an area that smells normal or looks clear may still be dangerous.

Keep exhaust out of the vehicle

Vehicle exhaust can be drawn into a car or SUV when its tailgate is open. If you open the tailgate, also open the vehicle’s windows or vents so air can move through. The CDC warns: “If only the tailgate is open, CO from the exhaust will be pulled into the car or SUV.” CDC guidance on carbon monoxide does not give a tailgating-specific safe idling duration or distance, so do not rely on an assumed time limit or a particular parking distance as protection.

Keep combustion equipment outside

Do not use fuel-burning equipment inside a vehicle, tent, garage, or other enclosed or partially enclosed space. This includes portable generators and gas camp stoves; charcoal should never be burned indoors. Opening a door or window does not make a garage safe for a generator. The CDC’s instructions are explicit: “Never burn charcoal indoors.” CDC’s CO basics also advises against using a portable gas camp stove indoors.

Place generators away from people and openings

Run a generator outdoors at least 20 feet from homes and buildings, with exhaust directed away from windows, doors, and vents. CDC guidance also specifies more than 20 feet from windows, doors, and vents. Never operate one inside a vehicle, tent, garage, or other enclosed area, even if doors or windows are open. See the CDC generator safety guidance and the CPSC’s May 27, 2026 generator warning.

  • Electrochemical sensor technology detects CO gas
  • Easy installation, no wiring needed, detects during a power failure by operating on 2-AA batteries (included); Install on a wall of your home or place on a tabletop

Recognize symptoms and respond immediately

CO poisoning can cause headache, dizziness, weakness, upset stomach, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion. Symptoms can resemble the flu. People who are asleep or intoxicated may not notice warning signs before they become critically ill. If CO exposure is possible, get everyone to fresh air immediately and seek emergency help; do not wait to see whether symptoms pass. The CDC lists common symptoms and response guidance.

Treat alarms as backup, not permission

A battery-operated CO alarm, or one with battery backup, can provide supplemental warning. CPSC recommends CO alarms in homes, and CDC’s generator guidance recommends a battery-powered or backup-powered detector in the home. Those household recommendations do not mean an alarm makes unsafe equipment placement or indoor use safe. CPSC says interconnected household alarms are best. CPSC CO alarm guidance

Why the precautions matter

CO is an odorless, colorless gas produced when fossil fuel burns. You cannot judge safety by smell, visible exhaust, or whether anyone feels ill yet. CPSC says more than 200 people in the United States die each year from accidental, non-fire-related CO poisoning associated with consumer products, including more than 100 deaths linked to portable generators; the cited estimate does not specify a year.
