To apply solder paste evenly through a DIY stencil, keep the PCB flat and immobile, align and secure the stencil over its pads, then pull a rigid squeegee across the apertures in one smooth pass with consistent pressure. Lift the stencil straight up and inspect the deposits before placing components.
What you need
- A clean, bare PCB and a stencil made for that board revision.
- Solder paste handled according to its manufacturer’s storage and use instructions.
- A rigid squeegee or scraper. A metal blade or credit-card-sized plastic piece can work for a prototype.
- Tape and a flat work surface to hold and support the board and stencil. An alignment fixture, lint-free wipes, and a stencil-compatible cleaner are optional aids.
How to print paste through the stencil
-
Support and secure the PCB
Place the bare board on a flat surface and tape it down so it cannot shift. For a small prototype, surround it with scrap boards of the same thickness; this supports the stencil evenly around the PCB.

-
Align and secure the stencil
Under good light, line up the stencil apertures with the PCB pads. A tape hinge can help you lift and return the stencil to the same position. Secure it so it cannot slide or lift as you work. This matters especially for fine-pitch pads: even a small alignment error can leave paste beside a pad or smear deposits across neighboring pads.

Place the paste and position the squeegee
Put a bead of paste beside one edge of the aperture field, not directly on top of the openings. Hold the stencil down and set the rigid squeegee at an angle that lets its edge sweep across the apertures.

PZRT Stainless Steel Solder Paste Scraper 155mm Flat Squeegee Scraping Board for Grinding and Polishing, Blue- Material: stainless steel + plastic, high hardness, durable, not easy to wear.
- Size: 155mm / 6.1inch, color: blue.
- Easy to use, time-saving and labor-saving, clean and nonadhesive.
- Scope of application: a good tool for grinding and polishing surface treatment of various stainless steel/iron/aluminum/copper/plastic and other metal and non-metal materials.
- Package includes: 1 x Solder Paste Scraper
-
Make one smooth, steady sweep
Draw the squeegee across the pattern in one controlled motion, using firm, consistent pressure. The aim is to fill the openings and leave the paste on the board, rather than force it underneath the stencil or scrape the apertures dry. If needed, use a light cleanup pass to clear excess paste from the stencil surface; pressing too hard can pull paste back out of the openings.
-
Lift and inspect
Lift the stencil vertically without sliding it across the board. Deposits should be distinct and sharply defined. Check fine-pitch pads closely, and correct missing or smeared deposits before placing components.

- Enhanced Alignment: Laser-etched scales for precise PCB/stencil positioning.
-
Clean the stencil carefully
Keep apertures clear so residue does not interfere with paste transfer. Choose a cleaner compatible with the stencil material. JLCPCB cautions that strong solvents such as acetone can damage PET or Mylar film stencils (JLCPCB’s stencil guidance).

What makes a stencil print even
Registration and stability
The apertures must overlap their intended pads, and neither the board nor stencil can move during the sweep. A tape hinge can aid repeatable positioning, but the stencil still needs to be held flat while printing.

Pressure and sweep consistency
Steady pressure helps transfer paste through the openings. Too little pressure may leave paste on the stencil instead of transferring cleanly; too much can scoop paste out of apertures. LPKF’s technical guide describes the desired result this way: “The applied solder paste must remain on the board and not stick to the stencil” (LPKF technical guide).
Stencil thickness and aperture design
Stencil thickness and aperture geometry affect how much paste reaches each pad. For 0.4 mm and 0.5 mm pitch LFCSP devices, Analog Devices recommends a 0.125 mm stencil; that is package-specific guidance, not a universal thickness for every PCB (Analog Devices’ LFCSP assembly guidelines). For the LFCSP thermal paddle, the same guidance recommends multiple smaller openings rather than one large opening, typically yielding 50%–80% paste coverage. That coverage figure also applies to that package guidance, not every thermal pad.

Stencil material and condition
Residue, roughness, or damaged aperture edges can hinder paste transfer. Film and vinyl DIY stencils also wear with use: JLCPCB estimates an approximate service life of 5–30 prints for these materials, noting that cleaning and squeegee pressure can stretch the stencil or damage aperture edges. Treat that as the supplier’s estimate; actual life depends on material, handling, and use.
Troubleshoot common print problems
| What you see | Likely factors | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Paste lands beside pads | Stencil misregistration or movement during the sweep | Recheck aperture-to-pad alignment and secure both stencil and PCB before printing again. |
| Deposits smear when the stencil is lifted | Lateral movement of the stencil or board | Lift straight up and make sure the board and stencil cannot shift. |
| Paste is missing or inconsistent | Uneven pressure, incomplete transfer, or obstructed apertures | Use a controlled sweep and check that stencil openings are clean and undamaged. |
| Too much paste or bridging between pads | Stencil thickness or oversized apertures may contribute; alignment and printing technique can also matter | Check the stencil design and registration as well as the way it is supported and swept. |
When a DIY stencil may not be enough
Hand alignment and DIY stencil material can be less repeatable on fine-pitch layouts. If the pad spacing exceeds what the stencil can align to reliably, use better support or consider a fabricated stencil for that board. Stencil printing is useful when you need deposits across many pads; for repair work or a one-off prototype, paste can also be dispensed by syringe. JLCPCB presents stencil printing as its preferred method for controlling pad volume and syringe application as an option for repairs or one-off prototypes, but this is supplier guidance rather than a controlled comparison.
