To reduce the chance of adware and other unwanted software getting onto a device, install apps only from official stores or the software maker’s verified website, reject setup extras you did not ask for, avoid download ads and alarming pop-ups, and keep your operating system, browser, and security software updated. These precautions and built-in protections lower risk; they cannot guarantee prevention, and not every potentially unwanted app is malware.
What adware and potentially unwanted apps mean
Adware displays advertising, sometimes in intrusive or unexpected ways. It can overlap with the broader category of potentially unwanted applications (PUA): Microsoft notes that PUA may show unwanted ads or offer to install other software, but does not classify every PUA as malware. That distinction matters: unwanted behavior deserves attention, but the label alone does not establish that an app is malicious.

Habits that reduce risk on any device
Choose the source before you download
Use the device’s official app store or the software maker’s official website. Check the site address yourself rather than following a download ad, an unsolicited message, or a pop-up. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns against unfamiliar free-download sites and software ads, which can lead to bundled or unwanted software.

Read every setup screen
During installation, take time to review each screen. Decline optional programs, browser extensions, search-engine changes, toolbars, or other changes you did not choose. Do not assume that every preselected box is required to install the app you came for.

Update the software you rely on
Turn on automatic updates for your operating system, browser, and security software where available, and install updates from the platform’s normal settings or official sources. The FTC recommends automatic updates for all three. Updates reduce exposure to known security issues, but they do not make an untrusted download safe.

Treat urgent pop-ups as untrusted
A page that says your device is infected and urges you to download a fix, update, or plug-in may be trying to trick you into installing unwanted software. Apple warns about deceptive pop-ups that imitate trusted notices or offer downloads. Close or dismiss the page without clicking its buttons; use your device’s own settings or a vendor’s official site if you need to check for an update or security issue.
Check removable storage
The FTC advises scanning external storage, such as a USB drive, before using it. Avoid opening files or installers from a drive you do not trust.

Windows: enable potentially unwanted app blocking
Windows Security includes a setting for potentially unwanted app protection. In current Windows versions, open Windows Security > App & browser control > Reputation-based protection, then review the potentially unwanted app blocking controls. Microsoft recommends turning on both Block apps and Block downloads. The exact wording or location can vary by Windows version.
- Block apps can detect PUA that has already been downloaded or installed, including software obtained through a browser other than Edge.
- Block downloads checks downloads in Microsoft Edge. It does not provide the same download check in other browsers.
Microsoft documents these controls in its Windows Security guidance. Windows 11 also includes Smart App Control, and Edge includes SmartScreen; these are additional safeguards, not a reason to ignore the source of a download or installation choices.

Apple devices: use trusted sources and handle Safari pop-ups cautiously
On iPhone, iPad, and Mac, keep Apple software current and prefer the App Store for apps. Apple’s guidance for blocking pop-ups in Safari warns that persistent pop-ups may indicate adware or other unwanted software has been downloaded. Do not use a pop-up’s own buttons to install a fix, update, or free download. Safari’s pop-up settings can limit interruptions, but they do not establish whether a device is free of unwanted software.
Android: leave unknown-app installation off unless necessary
Install apps from Google Play and keep Install unknown apps disabled unless you have a specific, trusted reason to enable it. The setting’s location varies by Android version and device maker, so use your phone maker’s instructions rather than relying on a universal menu path. If you enable the setting for a particular task, turn it off again when you are done.
The FBI’s mobile-device best practices recommend restricting installations to Google Play and limiting installation from unknown sources.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPossible warning signs—and what they do not prove
Unexpected ads, browser redirects, slowdowns, or unfamiliar toolbars and add-ons can be warning signs of unwanted software. Apple also notes that pop-ups that persist despite browser settings may mean adware or other unwanted software was installed. These symptoms are not a diagnosis: they can have other causes, and their presence alone does not prove adware.
If you see suspicious changes, stop entering sensitive information on the affected device until you have checked it. Use trusted guidance from the device maker or a government consumer-safety source to investigate and clean up; do not install a tool offered by the suspicious pop-up itself.
