The best fit is the one a communicator can access reliably, use to say what they want across everyday settings, and maintain with help from communication partners. TouchChat, LAMP Words for Life, and Proloquo2Go take different approaches; compare them against the person’s access needs and try them with the communicator and their AAC team where possible.
How should you compare AAC apps?
AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) apps can turn selections or typed text into speech, but a feature list cannot tell you how well a system will work for one person. Consider these practical dimensions together:
- Access: Can the communicator see, reach, and select buttons reliably using their available input method, such as direct touch or switches?
- Vocabulary: How are words organized? Does the system support core vocabulary, categories, motor patterns, spelling, or a combination—and can the communicator grow into it?
- Speech: Are suitable voices and languages available? Does the app speak selected words immediately, or compose a message before speaking it?
- Customization: Can a communication partner add words, change symbols or photos, adjust the layout, and back up or share the setup? What training is needed to make changes safely?
- Practical fit: Does it run on the intended device and operating system? Is there someone available to help set it up, model its use, and keep it consistent across settings?
Official product descriptions are useful for confirming advertised capabilities, not for proving which app is easiest or most effective. The official materials available for these apps do not provide a head-to-head usability test, comparative speech-intelligibility measure, or outcome statistic. A universal ranking would therefore overstate what is known.
What is the difference between TouchChat, LAMP Words for Life, and Proloquo2Go?
The available official descriptions establish different design emphases, but do not support a fair ease-of-use ranking. Treat the table as a starting point for a trial, not a verdict.

Which AAC app is easiest to use?
Ease depends on the communicator’s reliable access method, vision and motor needs, vocabulary, and the support available to configure and model the system. A layout that appears simple to a partner may be hard for the communicator to access; a larger vocabulary may be useful only if its buttons remain visible and selectable.

Grid size involves a real tradeoff. Showing more vocabulary can reduce the need to navigate through folders, but buttons must remain easy for the user to see and touch. AssistiveWare’s Progressive Language guidance recommends enough buttons to support vocabulary and reduce navigation, while emphasizing visibility and touchability. When possible, include the communicator and their AAC team in choosing and trialing a system. Ask them to assess access, vocabulary, and the support needed for use across home, school, work, or other everyday settings; do not infer fit from a vendor’s feature count.

Can you customize the words and voice?
For Proloquo2Go, AssistiveWare documents ways to edit and organize buttons and folders, adjust speech output and appearance, change grid size, use two languages, and back up or share a setup. Do not assume that customization works the same way in all three apps. Confirm each app’s current editing, voice, backup, and sharing options with its publisher, and make sure the people who will support the communicator know how to preserve useful vocabulary and layout choices.

Will the app work on your device?
Compatibility varies by app. AssistiveWare lists Proloquo2Go for iPad, iPhone, Apple Watch, and Mac as a separate app. AssistiveWare product information A compatible iPad is one possible hardware path, not a universal AAC requirement. Other apps may have different device and operating-system support; verify the current requirements with each publisher before buying hardware or a license.

How to trial an AAC app before choosing
- Confirm device and access: Check the publisher’s current hardware and operating-system requirements. Test the communicator’s actual input method, including switches or keyguards if relevant.
- Try a comfortable grid: Let the communicator select buttons during realistic communication tasks. Check that the layout is both visible and touchable, rather than choosing by button count alone.
- Listen to speech and language options: Try the available voices, language settings, and message-composition behavior with words and phrases the communicator wants to use. Verify regional availability with the publisher.
- Test vocabulary and customization: Find out how to add personal words, change symbols or photos, and organize folders. Ask who will make changes and how the current setup can be backed up or shared.
- Plan support and consistency: Identify who will help program the system and teach communication partners to model it across the communicator’s everyday settings.
- Verify price and licensing: Check current regional pricing, license terms, and compatibility directly with each publisher before committing.
A trial should involve the person who will communicate with the app, not just the person selecting or configuring it. The goal is to see whether they can access useful vocabulary and communicate in the situations that matter to them.
