How to Check an HDD’s Health—and What SMART Can Tell You About Its Remaining Life

Check an HDD’s SMART status and available attributes with a SMART-capable utility, then run an appropriate manufacturer diagnostic or self-test. Back up important files before testing. A SMART warning, worsening sector-related readings, or a failed test is a reason to protect your data and plan for replacement or warranty service—not to calculate a precise number of days left. SMART can flag some developing problems, but it cannot reliably predict an individual drive’s remaining life.

How to check an HDD’s health

  1. Identify the right drive. Match the disk’s model and capacity in the utility to the HDD you intend to check. This matters especially when several disks are connected. USB enclosures and RAID controllers can limit which SMART details a utility can see; missing data does not by itself prove the HDD lacks SMART support. Check the enclosure or controller documentation if readings are unavailable.
  2. Review the SMART report. Use a SMART-capable utility to inspect the overall-health assessment, available attributes, error log, and self-test log. The smartmontools project provides smartctl for reporting SMART data and running self-tests, and smartd for monitoring. The device reports its own values; smartctl does not calculate or reinterpret them for you.
  3. Run a manufacturer diagnostic if appropriate. SeaTools is available for Windows, Linux, and as a bootable diagnostic kit for Seagate drives and compatible devices. Its documentation distinguishes SMART checks, built-in short drive self-tests, generic tests, and long tests.
  4. Back up before extended diagnostics or repair attempts. Copy important data to a separate destination first. Avoid erase, repair, or write operations unless you understand their effects. Seagate specifically advises backing up before its diagnostic procedure for external storage and before using SeaTools’ Fix All function; recovery results from Fix All can vary.

How to interpret SMART readings and test results

Overall status and test history

Read the overall-health result alongside the available attributes, error log, and self-test history. A failing health assessment, a failed self-test, or worsening errors should be treated as a serious warning. A passing result is limited evidence: Seagate notes that a drive can seem to function normally despite a SMART alert, and some diagnostics may still return PASS after a SMART error.

Sector-related readings

Reallocated sectors are sectors the drive has replaced with reserved sectors. Pending sectors are unstable sectors awaiting resolution. These readings can help identify trouble, particularly when they worsen over time, but their raw encodings and thresholds vary. Do not apply a universal raw-value cutoff or assume that normalized values mean the same thing on every HDD. Consult the manufacturer’s documentation for the specific drive and consider the trend as well as the current report.

Why drive-specific interpretation matters

Manufacturers choose attributes and thresholds for their designs. SMART output may show normalized values, thresholds, and raw values, but a number in one model’s report may not have the same meaning in another model’s report. Treat SMART as a set of drive-reported indicators, not a standardized score that independently certifies the disk.

  • Recovers Data from Lost Partitions In case one or more drive partitions are not visible under ‘Connected Drives,’ the ‘Can’t Find Drive’ option can help users locate inaccessible, missing, and deleted drive partition(s). Once located, users can select and run a deep scan on the found partition(s) to recover the lost data.

Which diagnostic should you run?

These checks answer different questions. The time estimate below is Seagate’s guidance for its long generic test on high-capacity drives; actual duration depends on the drive model, interface, and condition.

Check What it covers Time Data considerations
SMART status check Quick review of conditions the HDD reports through SMART; not a full-media scan. Not stated in the cited SeaTools documentation. Seagate describes its SMART check as data-safe.
Short self-test Checks selected drive functions; it is not equivalent to reading every sector. Not stated in the cited SeaTools documentation. Seagate describes certain self-tests as data-safe.
Long generic test Reads each sector, providing broader media coverage than a short check. Seagate says it may take 3 to 5 hours per terabyte on high-capacity drives; actual time varies. Back up important files before extended diagnostics.
Fix All Repair-oriented operation rather than a read-only status check. Not stated in the cited SeaTools documentation. Seagate advises backing up first and warns that recovery results can vary.

SMART visibility and test access depend on the connection path as well as the drive. SeaTools offers Windows, Linux, and bootable versions, but a USB bridge or RAID controller can affect which details a tool can retrieve.

Can SMART estimate an HDD’s remaining life?

Not reliably for an individual drive. SMART monitors only attributes the disk can measure, and not every failure is predictable. A status report can identify known warning conditions, but it is neither a guarantee of future operation nor a calendar countdown to failure.

Backblaze publishes SMART-attribute correlations drawn from its own data-center drive population, using SMART data collected with smartmontools. Those observations can inform analysis of that population; they are not a remaining-life calculator for a particular consumer HDD. The cited page does not establish a universal expected-lifespan figure for consumer drives.

What to do if an HDD looks unhealthy

  • If the drive is still readable, copy irreplaceable files first. If it is behaving erratically, avoid unnecessary writes.
  • Keep a separate backup. A second external hard drive can be one backup destination, but a single copy alone is not a complete backup strategy.
  • Plan to replace or warranty-service a drive with a SMART failure or failed manufacturer diagnostic. Seagate advises warranty exchange after a failed SMART check or short drive self-test.
  • If critical data is at risk, avoid repeated repair attempts. Unusual noises or severe read errors are reasons to weigh professional recovery against the value of the data. The guidance cited here does not endorse a particular recovery provider.
