For a Steam Deck and a desktop PC both running the Steam edition of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, let Steam Cloud sync the save. To move a save between Steam and a different platform, use the game’s separate cross-progression feature and link both copies to the same CD PROJEKT RED account. The two systems are not interchangeable.
Transfer a save to Steam Deck
First identify where the save is coming from. Use Steam Cloud for Steam-to-Steam play, such as moving between a Steam desktop PC and Steam Deck. Use the in-game cross-progression flow when the other device runs a different platform or storefront.

From a Steam PC to a Steam Deck
- On the PC, make sure the game is online and Steam Cloud synchronization has finished before closing Steam or switching devices.
- On the Deck, connect to the internet and allow Steam to finish syncing before launching the game.
- Load the save in The Witcher 3. Steam lists Steam Cloud as a feature for the Steam edition, and Valve describes Steam Cloud as a way for supported games to store saves and other per-user data. These features make it the relevant route for Steam PC-to-Deck saves; they do not guarantee that every sync or conflicting-save situation resolves automatically. From another platform to Steam Deck
Use The Witcher 3’s cross-progression system, not Steam Cloud alone. CD PROJEKT RED’s support instructions say to link the game to a CD PROJEKT RED account, create a save that uploads to the cloud, then connect the destination copy to that same account and open the save from Load Game. Set up The Witcher 3 cross-progression
- Update the game. Install the latest patch. The support article says the game version appears beneath the title on the main menu.
- Open the cross-progression control. From the source copy, open Load Game and select Cross Progression at the lower right.
- Link your account. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect that game to a CD PROJEKT RED account.
- Check the setting. Cross-progression is enabled by default after linking. You can turn it on or off at Options → Gameplay → Cross Progression.
- Create a new save. The publisher says a newly created save uploads automatically. Confirm that a cloud icon appears beside the save name.
- Link the destination copy. On Steam Deck, open My Rewards and connect the game to the same CD PROJEKT RED account.
- Find the save. Open Load Game on the Deck and look for the uploaded save.
CD PROJEKT RED Support describes the feature this way: “Your latest saves will be automatically uploaded to the cloud so you can easily pick up where you left off on other platforms.” The documented steps do not establish how every platform pairing handles conflicting saves or account errors.

Steam Cloud and cross-progression are different
| What you need to know | Steam Cloud | The Witcher 3 cross-progression |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Syncing saves between installations of the Steam edition, such as desktop PC and Steam Deck. | Moving saves between platforms through the game’s account-linking flow. |
| Account or setting | Steam account and Steam Cloud support for the game. | The same CD PROJEKT RED account linked to both copies; the feature can be toggled in Options → Gameplay → Cross Progression. |
| What to check | Steam’s synchronization status before changing devices. | The cloud icon beside the uploaded save and its appearance in Load Game on the destination. |
Steam Cloud’s availability on the Steam listing does not mean it transfers a save to a console. Conversely, linking a CD PROJEKT RED account for cross-progression does not replace Steam Cloud for ordinary Steam PC-to-PC synchronization. The official instructions establish the general transfer flow, not every possible platform-pair edge case.
If your save is missing
Start by checking which sync path applies, then check only that path’s indicators.

Steam Deck and Steam PC
- Confirm both devices are using the Steam edition and the same Steam account.
- Check that Steam Cloud synchronization has completed on the source before moving to the Deck, and on the Deck before launching the game.
- If Steam has not finished syncing, wait for it rather than making or saving a different version of the game on the other device. The available official information does not specify a universal resolution for conflicting saves.
Steam Deck and another platform
- Check that both copies are updated to the latest patch and linked to the same CD PROJEKT RED account.
- Verify that cross-progression is enabled at Options → Gameplay → Cross Progression.
- On the source, create a new save and check for its cloud icon; on the destination, look for it in Load Game.
Patch 4.03’s May 11, 2023 changelog recorded fixes for some cross-progression loading issues on multiple machines using the same GOG account. That dated note shows that version-specific issues have occurred; it does not establish a current Steam Deck problem or a universal fix. Patch 4.03 notes

Valve’s Verified category means a game works well on Steam Deck by default. Valve also uses Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown categories, and says compatibility ratings are reviewed over time as the Deck changes. Check the game’s Steam store page for its current, title-specific badge rather than treating an older announcement as a live status. Valve’s Steam Deck Verified program
