If your 24/7 rain loop goes black on YouTube, first find out where the picture disappears: check the encoder preview and a local recording, then check YouTube’s Live Control Room and the outbound connection. A black picture already present in the encoder points to the playback source, routing, encoder, or computer; a healthy local picture with a failed viewer-facing stream points toward ingest, connection, or a YouTube enforcement action. No single setting prevents every black screen.
Diagnose the black screen in order
Use the same rain video and audio you intend to broadcast. A still rain scene can make a frozen source hard to notice, so check that the video advances over time, not just that one frame appears.

- Test the source and preview. Start a test stream and inspect the preview in YouTube Live Control Room before going live. YouTube’s Live streaming tips say: “Before clicking Start Streaming, check the preview in the Live Control Room.” Confirm that the rain footage moves and that the audio behaves as expected.
- Check a local recording. Make sure the encoder is writing an archive and that the file is growing. Play it back or inspect it while the stream runs. If both the encoder preview and recording are black or frozen, investigate the source video, player, scene or source routing, encoder errors, and computer load.
- Compare local and delivered video. If the preview and local recording are clean but YouTube’s preview or the viewer-facing stream is not, open Live Control Room’s stream health messages and investigate the outbound connection and ingest configuration.
- Check for enforcement notices. Look in YouTube Studio for copyright warnings, restrictions, or strikes. A placeholder image can be an enforcement response rather than a fault in the rain loop or encoder.
Fix problems visible in the encoder or local recording
A fault visible before the feed reaches YouTube is usually on the source-to-encoder side. Check that the rain file still plays, the correct source is selected and visible in the scene, and the loop or media player has not stopped or lost its file path. Read the encoder’s error messages and check CPU load; update the encoder software if it is out of date. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance recommends using local preview and recording evidence to distinguish a source or encoder problem from a connection problem.
During a long test, verify that the picture continues to advance. An encoder can keep sending a signal while its media source has frozen, so a connected status alone does not prove that the rain video is playing.

Resolve YouTube ingest and stream-health errors
For the relevant YouTube live-ingest format guidance, the expected video and audio formats are H.264 and AAC. Check the Live Control Room health indicator for a specific format or container error and correct the encoder output it identifies. Do not treat a clean local preview as proof that YouTube is receiving a compatible feed.
Also confirm that the encoder is using the stream URL and stream key for the intended YouTube stream. The URL tells the encoder where to send the feed; the key is the credential YouTube uses to accept it. If you changed or reset the key, update the encoder configuration to match.

Test the outbound connection
If local video is healthy but YouTube reports poor stream health or viewers receive a failed picture, test the upload connection and inspect the Live Control Room messages. YouTube advises contacting your internet service provider if its connection test identifies a problem. A wired Ethernet connection can be a useful setup or diagnostic choice, but it is not a guaranteed fix for every black screen.
For a stream that must recover after an interruption, test the recovery plan before relying on it. YouTube suggests testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then checking whether the player switches to the backup encoder. Do this during a controlled test, not an important live event.

Check copyright separately from playback faults
A black or placeholder-like image may result from YouTube detecting third-party content, even when the source and encoder are working. YouTube Help says: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” Check Studio for notices and make sure you have the rights needed to stream both the rain video and its audio. YouTube warns that unresolved content can interrupt or terminate a broadcast.
Do not mistake the archive limit for a 12-hour black-screen rule
YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archiving statement, not evidence that an active stream turns black at 12 hours. For a 24/7 broadcast, treat continuous playback and archive retention as separate concerns: confirm the source keeps sending video, and keep your own recording if you need a complete record across long runtimes.
