How to Preserve Unspecified SameSite Cookies in Electron and Playwright

Use Electron’s main-process Session cookie API and explicitly set sameSite: 'unspecified'. Playwright Chromium cookie round trips may represent a missing value as Lax, while Chromium still applies Lax-by-default behavior to cookies without an explicit attribute.

To preserve a cookie’s absent SameSite attribute in Electron, set it through the main-process cookies API on the Session used by the target window, and explicitly pass sameSite: 'unspecified'. Do not assume a Playwright cookie read-and-write round trip preserves that distinction: Playwright’s Chromium implementation currently maps a missing retrieved value to Lax.

Set the cookie through the Electron Session used by the window

Electron exposes cookie operations on a Session, and those APIs run in the main process. For a window using Electron’s default session, set the cookie like this:

const { session } = require('electron')

await session.defaultSession.cookies.set({
  url: 'https://example.com',
  name: 'session',
  value: 'value',
  sameSite: 'unspecified',
})

Electron’s Cookie Object documents unspecified as a valid SameSite value. Its Cookies API documents that omitting sameSite when setting a cookie defaults it to lax, so specify unspecified explicitly when that stored attribute matters.

The session must be the one that owns the relevant web contents. If the app creates a non-default session, use that session’s cookies property rather than session.defaultSession. Setting a cookie in a different session will not configure the target window’s cookie store.

Unspecified does not mean unrestricted cross-site delivery

There is an important difference between preserving the stored attribute and changing how a cookie is sent. “Unspecified” means no explicit SameSite attribute was set. Chromium treats cookies without that attribute as Lax by default, restricting them to first-party or same-site contexts by default. If the application needs a cookie to be sent in third-party or other cross-site contexts, Chromium’s guidance is to set SameSite=None; Secure instead. Choose the value to match the required application behavior, not simply to silence a test.

See Chromium’s SameSite FAQ for how absent attributes and SameSite=None; Secure are handled.

Why a Playwright cookie round trip can change the value

Playwright’s Chromium implementation currently maps a missing SameSite value returned by Chromium to Lax when creating its cookie representation. Its cookie-setting path passes the supplied SameSite value to Chromium. As a result, if a workflow reads cookies through Playwright and later reapplies the resulting list, it should not be assumed to preserve the difference between an absent attribute and explicit Lax. The behavior is visible in the Playwright Chromium source.

When that distinction matters, set or inspect the cookie using Electron’s Session cookie API, then verify behavior in the Electron/Chromium version shipped with the application. Playwright’s Electron API documents launching an Electron application and working with its windows; it does not turn every Electron main-process API into a Playwright browser-context operation.

Verify the attribute and the real request behavior

  1. Identify the target session. Confirm which Electron Session the window or web contents uses.
  2. Set it explicitly. In the main process, call that session’s cookies.set with sameSite: 'unspecified'.
  3. Inspect Electron’s result. Query the cookie through the same Session API and check the reported SameSite value.
  4. Exercise the actual flow. Test the relevant same-site and cross-site requests, including federated login, embedded content, payments, or cross-site POST requests where applicable.
  5. Investigate unclear failures. Inspect DevTools issues and network details, or capture a Chromium NetLog. A DevTools warning by itself does not establish that application functionality is broken.
  6. Test the shipped version. Repeat the checks on the project’s actual Electron release, which bundles a particular Chromium version. For relevant cross-site POST flows, test both shortly after cookie creation and after a delay longer than two minutes; Chromium’s guidance describes a historical Lax+POST exception for newly created cookies.

Chromium’s SameSite testing and debugging guide recommends checking flows such as federated login, payments, multiple domains, embedded content, and POST requests. Testing the application behavior is more informative than treating a warning as a verdict.

Choose the implementation based on the required behavior

  • Preserve an absent attribute: set and inspect through the Electron Session API with sameSite: 'unspecified'.
  • Allow cross-site sending: determine whether the cookie needs SameSite=None; Secure; unspecified is subject to Chromium’s Lax-by-default behavior.
  • Copy cookies through Playwright: account for the possibility that a missing retrieved value is represented as Lax before the list is reapplied.
  • Validate a production issue: reproduce the actual request flow on the Electron/Chromium version bundled by the app, since version and request context both affect the result.
