If your PS2 stopped showing its normal startup screen immediately after a modchip installation, the installation is a reasonable place to investigate—but that alone does not prove the chip is defective. First distinguish a true no-boot problem from a console that reaches the browser but cannot read a disc. Before inspecting anything, identify the console model, motherboard revision, modchip model, and the exact installation diagram used.
Identify what “fails to boot” means
Record what happens from the moment you press power, before opening the console. Note whether the standby light works, whether the console powers on, whether the fan or disc mechanism starts, whether the display stays black, and whether the normal PlayStation startup display appears.

- No display or normal startup screen: This is the black-screen/no-boot path addressed here.
- The console reaches the browser but rejects a disc, or shows a disc-format error: That is a disc-read problem, not the same symptom as a console that cannot reach its normal boot display. Rockstar’s support guidance for disc-read or graphics complaints includes trying to start without a disc and checking other discs; those steps do not diagnose a post-install black screen. Check the installation against the exact documentation
Use the wiring diagram for the specific chip and motherboard revision in your console. Do not transfer point labels or instructions from one chip or board to another. The DMS4 SE PS2 Mod Install Guide V12–V14 recommends checking the specified power and ground wires, confirming that wires lie flat against the motherboard, and looking for solder bridges between neighboring pins or pads. These checks apply to the DMS4 installations and revisions covered by that guide—not to every modchip or PS2 board. Read the DMS4 SE PS2 Mod Install Guide V12–V14 only if your installation matches its scope.

During a visual inspection, compare each connection with the correct diagram rather than guessing from wire color or apparent location. If you cannot positively identify the board revision, chip, or connection points, stop rather than probing or reworking connections on the basis of a generic guide.

Consider board damage if the screen stays black
A black screen that begins right after installation makes the work a plausible suspect, but it does not establish whether the cause is a connection, a solder bridge, damage to the board, or another fault. An older PS2 repair reference lists a blown surface-mount fuse and installation damage around BIOS solder points as possible causes; it does not identify the faulty fuse or trace for a particular motherboard revision. Treat those as possibilities for board-level diagnosis, not instructions to bridge a fuse, scrape a trace, or alter BIOS connections. See the PS2 repair reference.
Choose a repair path that matches your experience

PCSX2 characterizes modchip use as high risk and suitable only for experienced solderers. Its BIOS-dumping guide describes the requirements and relative risk; it is not a repair manual for a PS2 that will not boot. If you are considering rework, having a fine-tip soldering iron does not establish the fault or make the work safe without the right experience.
