To keep captions available during a YouTube Live stream, send them to YouTube as embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions or through supported caption software that sends them over HTTP POST. A subtitle track in a video file is not, by itself, YouTube’s documented live-caption method. For an archived or uploaded video, keep the subtitle file separately and add it in YouTube Studio.
First decide where viewers need the subtitles
“Preserve subtitles” can mean three different things: text visibly burned into the picture, selectable captions during the live stream, or selectable subtitles on the video after upload. These are separate workflows. YouTube’s live-caption guidance documents delivery of captions to the live stream; YouTube Studio has a separate tool for adding subtitles to an uploaded video.

| Viewer outcome | What to do | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Text always visible in the picture | Use a workflow that renders the text into the video image. The cited YouTube guidance does not specify a burn-in command or a particular encoding application. | A selectable subtitle track will not necessarily appear as visible text. |
| Selectable captions during YouTube Live | Send embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions through the encoder, or use supported caption software that sends captions over HTTP POST. YouTube currently documents one caption track for its embedded workflow. YouTube Live caption requirements | An ordinary SRT, ASS, WebVTT, or other subtitle track inside a video is not, on its own, the documented live-caption delivery path. |
| Selectable subtitles on an uploaded or archived video | Keep the timed subtitle file and add it to the video in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s subtitle and caption instructions | Do not assume live caption delivery automatically leaves a separate selectable subtitle track in the archive. |
Set up selectable captions for the live stream
Option 1: Send embedded 608/708 captions from the encoder
- In YouTube Live Control Room, configure the stream’s closed-caption setting for Embedded 608/708.
- Configure the encoder to output EIA 608 or CEA 708 captions. YouTube says this may involve reading captions from a specific file format or encoding them in real time; check the instructions for the caption source and encoder you use.
- Send a short test stream and confirm that captions appear in the live preview before relying on the setup for a long-running broadcast.
YouTube’s embedded live-caption workflow currently supports one caption track. If you need multiple selectable language tracks during the live stream, the cited documentation does not establish that this embedded workflow provides them. See YouTube’s current live-caption requirements.
Option 2: Send captions through supported software
YouTube also documents supported caption software that sends captions over HTTP POST. Confirm that the specific caption service and encoder are supported and correctly configured for your production, then test the captions in the live preview. YouTube describes the options as captions embedded in the video or sent through supported software over HTTP POST; this is caption delivery, not proof that a subtitle stream in the source file will survive a video transcode.
#1 Best Overall
- Edit your videos and pictures to perfection with a host of helpful editing tools.
- Create amazing videos with fun effects and interesting transitions.
- Record or add audio clips to your video, or simply pull stock sounds from the NCH Sound Library.
- Enhance your audio tracks with impressive audio effects, like Pan, Reverb or Echo.
- Share directly online to Facebook, YouTube, and other platforms or burn directly to disc.
Keep selectable subtitles on the uploaded video
If viewers also need subtitles on a recording or archive, retain the subtitle file independently from the video encoding job. YouTube Studio supports uploading a timed subtitle file, auto-syncing a transcript, or entering captions manually. Review the language and timing in Studio and check playback after saving. Some subtitle formats can also carry positioning and style information, so verify the result rather than assuming those details will appear identically.
- Keep an untouched copy of each source subtitle file and label it so it stays associated with the correct video.
- In YouTube Studio, open the video’s subtitle workflow and choose the option that matches your material: upload a timed file, auto-sync a transcript, or enter captions manually.
- Set or verify the language, inspect synchronization, save, and review playback on the published video.
For streams under 12 hours, YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says the stream is automatically archived. That archive statement does not establish that a separate selectable subtitle track will be retained; verify the resulting video and add subtitles in Studio if needed. Encoding and ingest settings are separate from subtitle delivery
YouTube’s live encoder settings explain how incoming live video is transcoded into viewer formats and give video codec, bitrate, and resolution recommendations. That describes the video path; it does not promise preservation of arbitrary subtitle tracks embedded in a source file. Choose video settings for the encoder and network separately from the caption method, and test the exact media, encoder, and caption path you plan to use. 1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you ingest with HLS, follow YouTube’s HLS-specific requirements: use TS segments, segment duration of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte-range support. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP. These are ingest requirements, not a guarantee that HLS preserves subtitle tracks. YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.

Why subtitle tracks disappear or fail to appear
- The output is video-only: A transcode may omit sidecar subtitle files or in-container subtitle streams. Keep the original subtitle file and check the encoded output; YouTube’s cited guidance does not provide a format-by-format preservation guarantee.
- Captions were not sent to the live stream: A subtitle track in the media file is not the documented live-caption path. Configure embedded 608/708 output or supported HTTP POST caption software.
- The encoder and caption format do not match: Check that the encoder is actually configured to emit EIA 608/CEA 708 captions, rather than merely loading a subtitle file for another purpose.
- The live preview has no captions: Test the caption source, encoder output, Live Control Room closed-caption setting, and—in the software delivery path—the caption service’s HTTP POST setup. Correct the failing stage and run another short test.
- Captions appear live but are missing from the archive: Live delivery and Studio subtitles are distinct. Add and review the timed subtitle file on the archived video in Studio.
- HLS ingest works but subtitles do not: Meeting HLS segment and request requirements does not establish subtitle preservation. Check the caption delivery path independently.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your 24/7 stream is built from uploaded videos, StreamNeo can loop them to YouTube from the cloud: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo does not replace the caption setup above: send live captions through a supported YouTube method, and add subtitles to an archive in Studio when needed.
