The correct method depends on the system and game: 3DS downloadable titles can use Save-Data Backup, Wii saves are copied only when each game allows it, Wii U uses a console-formatted USB drive or an official system transfer, and Switch uses title-compatible cloud backups or a direct console-to-console transfer.
Do not assume that an SD card, USB drive or Nintendo Switch Online subscription can preserve every save. Cartridge saves, console-bound data, blocked Wii transfers and one-way replacement-console transfers all require separate planning.

What you should do before a Nintendo console fails
Start with the source console, not the replacement. Nintendo’s official transfer tools generally require both the old and new systems to be present, powered on and working. If the old console no longer boots, the normal transfer route may be unavailable, and there is no general Nintendo service that turns a dead console into a recoverable save archive.
Use this order of operations:
- Identify where each save actually lives: console memory, an SD card, a Wii U-formatted USB device or a cloud account.
- Make the platform-specific backup or transfer while the source system is operational.
- Keep the source console and original storage until the copy has been opened and checked on the destination.
- Record dates and keep more than one copy when the platform allows it. A single removable card is not an independently verified backup.
Save protection is title-specific. A downloaded game, a retail cartridge, a Virtual Console release and a system-level profile can follow different rules even on the same console family.

Quick comparison of Nintendo’s preservation options
| Platform | Primary method | What it covers | Main exclusions or risks | Hardware or service needed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo 3DS family | Save-Data Backup from the HOME Menu | Eligible downloadable Nintendo 3DS software and most Virtual Console games | No retail 3DS cartridge saves, DSiWare or Game Boy Advance software; maximum 30 backups | Inserted SD card; system menu version 6.0.0-0U or later |
| Wii | Data Management SD copy, or Wii-to-Wii U transfer | Only saves that permit copying; supported Wii software, WiiWare and Virtual Console saves can move during an official transfer | Developers can block copying; some saves move only partially; SD-resident saves must first return to Wii memory; Wii mini has no SD support | Compatible SD card for copying; Wii-to-Wii U transfer also needs an SD/SDHC card with at least 512 MB free, internet and a working Nintendo Network ID on the Wii U |
| Wii U | Wii U-formatted USB backup, or Wii U-to-Wii U System Transfer | Save data copied through Data Management; a system transfer moves the source console’s supported content | Transfer replaces target content and formats the source after completion; USB storage must be formatted by Wii U | Wii U-formatted USB storage for backups; both consoles, working GamePad and sufficiently large SD card for a system transfer |
| Nintendo Switch | Save Data Cloud or user/save transfer | Compatible Switch software through Nintendo Switch Online, or direct transfer between available consoles | Compatibility is title-specific; no general local save-backup feature; Wii U and 3DS saves are not supported; cloud access pauses when membership expires | Nintendo Switch Online for cloud saves; both Switch consoles for direct transfer |
How to back up Nintendo 3DS save data
The 3DS has an official Save-Data Backup command for eligible digital software. It writes a backup to the SD card inserted in the 3DS, so the card becomes the preservation medium. The feature is not a universal cartridge dumper and does not replace a full system transfer.
Prepare the 3DS
- Update the system to at least menu version 6.0.0-0U.
- Insert the SD card used by the system and make sure it remains with the console during the backup process.
- Keep enough free space for the title’s backup and avoid removing the card while data is being written.
Create a Save-Data Backup
- Open the software’s icon on the 3DS HOME Menu.
- Open the software’s HOME Menu options.
- Select Save-Data Backup and confirm the operation.
- Repeat for each eligible title you want to preserve. The system supports up to 30 backups.
Nintendo documents this feature for downloadable Nintendo 3DS software and most Virtual Console games. It does not back up saves stored on retail Nintendo 3DS cartridges, DSiWare or Game Boy Advance software. If a title is not offered the Save-Data Backup command, do not infer that copying the SD card will create a usable save; the title may use a different storage rule.
Verify and protect the SD backup
After creating a backup, leave the original console intact. Store the SD card safely and, where practical, make a second archival copy of the card’s contents without altering the original structure. Verification should happen on a working 3DS by restoring or opening the title according to Nintendo’s supported process and checking that the expected progress appears. A card that has merely been copied to a computer has not yet been proven restorable on a 3DS.

For a complete 3DS-to-3DS replacement, use Nintendo’s system-transfer route rather than treating Save-Data Backup as a full migration. Both systems must be available and operational. Nintendo warns that data on the target system’s SD card is not usable after the transfer, so copy any target data you need before starting. Keep the source system until the destination has been checked.

How to preserve Wii saves
Wii save copying is less predictable than it looks. The console’s SD workflow is title-dependent: a developer can prevent copying, and a game may move only part of its data. A successful copy command therefore does not guarantee that every piece of progress, settings or downloadable content has moved.
Copy an eligible Wii save to an SD card
- Insert a compatible SD card into the Wii. The Wii mini does not support SD cards.
- From the Wii Menu, open Wii Options, then Data Management.
- Choose Save Data, then Wii.
- Select the title and choose the available move or copy command.
- After the operation, inspect the destination card and retain the original Wii save until you have tested the copy.
If the copy command is unavailable, the title is blocking the operation. If only some data moves, the limitation is part of that game’s design; an SD card cannot override it. Do not erase the source save to create space until the destination has been tested.
Prepare Wii saves for a Wii-to-Wii U transfer
Nintendo’s Wii-to-Wii U transfer cannot take saves directly from the Wii’s SD card. Before launching the transfer, move every save you want to migrate from the SD card back into the source Wii’s system memory. This step is easy to miss and can make a seemingly complete transfer omit selected games.

Run and check the Wii-to-Wii U transfer
- Return all intended SD-resident saves to Wii system memory.
- Start Nintendo’s Wii-to-Wii U transfer software and follow the on-screen preparation steps.
- Insert the required SD or SDHC card when prompted and allow the consoles to exchange the transfer data.
- Do not power off either system while the transfer is running.
- Launch the migrated Wii software on the Wii U and check the saves that matter before disposing of or resetting the Wii.
How to back up Wii U save data
For a routine Wii U backup, use a USB storage device that the Wii U formats for its own use. A computer-formatted drive is not automatically a usable Wii U save archive; let the console perform the format and manage the device through Data Management.
Copy Wii U saves to USB storage
- Connect a compatible USB storage device to the Wii U.
- Accept the Wii U format prompt if the device is not already formatted for the console. Formatting erases existing content on that device, so use an empty drive or move unrelated files first.
- Open System Settings, then Data Management.
- Choose the option to copy or move save data and select the source title.
- Select the Wii U-formatted USB device as the destination and confirm.
A later Wii U system update adds dates to save-data copies. When several copies exist, select the newest dated copy; choosing an older one can overwrite newer progress after restoration. Keep the console’s original data until the dated backup has been tested.
Move to a replacement Wii U
Use Nintendo’s Wii U-to-Wii U System Transfer when replacing the console. Both Wii U systems and a working GamePad are required, along with an SD card large enough for the system and save data. The transfer is not a merge: content on the source replaces the target’s content, and Nintendo formats the source Wii U when the process finishes.
- Back up or separately copy anything on the target Wii U that you need to retain; it will be replaced.
- Prepare the SD card and connect both consoles to power and the internet as directed by the transfer utility.
- Start the system-transfer function on the source and target and follow the displayed prompts.
- Allow the transfer to finish without disconnecting either console or the GamePad.
- Afterward, start important games on the target and verify their saves.
If a USB device was synchronized with the source Wii U, Nintendo says it can be connected to the target after the transfer, where its data remains available. Treat that USB device as a separate dependency: label it, keep it with the destination console and do not reformat it on a computer.

What Nintendo Switch can and cannot preserve
Nintendo Switch Save Data Cloud is not a successor archive for every Nintendo platform. It is for compatible Nintendo Switch software and requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo says the vast majority of Switch games support cloud saves, but support remains title-specific.
Use Save Data Cloud for an eligible Switch game
- Subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online on the user profile that owns the saves.
- Open System Settings, then Data Management, and choose the cloud-save controls.
- Select the user and title, then upload or download the dated cloud copy as appropriate.
- Before replacing the console, open the game on the destination and confirm that the expected progress is present.
If the membership expires, cloud backups are inaccessible until you resubscribe. Nintendo says prior backups can be accessed again when you resubscribe within 180 days. That rule is not a reason to leave the only copy in the cloud indefinitely; keep the subscription status and the 180-day window in your preservation plan.
Transfer between two Switch consoles
When both Switch systems are available, use the built-in user and save-data transfer. Keep the source console until the destination has opened the relevant games and the saves have been checked. Switch does not provide a general local save-data backup feature, so copying a microSD card is not a substitute for transferring save data.
What Switch Online does not cover
Nintendo states that Wii U and 3DS titles do not use Switch Save Data Cloud. A Switch Online membership therefore cannot recover a Wii U or 3DS save, even if the same game series exists on Switch. Preserve those older saves with their own console-specific procedures.

Risks that can destroy a backup
Overwriting the wrong destination
Wii U system transfer replaces the target’s content, and dated Wii U USB copies can restore an older state over newer progress. Back up target data first and choose the newest dated copy.
Formatting a source or storage device
The Wii U-to-Wii U transfer formats the source Wii U after completion. Wii U also formats USB storage for console use. Never begin either operation with data you have not copied elsewhere.
Assuming removable media is universal
3DS Save-Data Backup excludes retail cartridges, DSiWare and Game Boy Advance software. Wii developers can block SD copying or allow only partial saves. A card or USB device is a transport medium, not proof that a title is portable.
Discarding the source too soon
Keep the old console, original SD card and Wii U USB device until the destination has launched the relevant software and displayed the expected progress. Verification is especially important after a one-way transfer or when a title has known restrictions.
Service dates that affect preservation planning
Storefront closure does not instantly erase local saves. Nintendo’s published dates distinguish purchases, online communication and redownload access:
| Date | Change | What it means for saves |
|---|---|---|
| January 30, 2019 | Nintendo’s Wii Shop Channel discontinuation page identified the early-2019 closure and related shutdown plans. | Wii software and account history should not be treated as services that will remain indefinitely available. |
| March 27, 2023 | Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShop purchases and free downloads ended. | Download new purchases no longer; preserve eligible digital saves and keep working consoles operating. |
| April 8, 2024 | Online play and other online-communication functionality for Wii U and 3DS software ended. | Offline saves can still matter even when online features no longer function. |
Nintendo says Wii U and 3DS redownloads and software updates remain available “for the foreseeable future.” That is not a permanent guarantee, so redownload anything essential while the service remains accessible and complete local backups before a console becomes unreliable.
Quick Recap
A practical preservation checklist
- 3DS: Update to menu version 6.0.0-0U or later, run Save-Data Backup for each eligible digital or Virtual Console title, and remember the 30-backup limit and exclusions.
- Wii: Test each title’s SD-copy command; return SD-resident saves to Wii memory before a Wii-to-Wii U transfer; do not expect Wii mini support.
- Wii U: Use a console-formatted USB device for dated copies, protect target data before system transfer and expect the source to be formatted afterward.
- Switch: Check cloud compatibility per title, maintain Nintendo Switch Online when cloud access is needed, and use direct transfer when both consoles work.
- All systems: Label storage, keep the original source and verify a real save in the destination before resetting, selling or recycling hardware.
