How to Preserve Palm-Leaf Manuscripts and Prevent Cracking, Mold, and Fading

Preserve a palm-leaf manuscript by keeping its environment stable, limiting light and handling, housing the bundle in a supportive archival box, and monitoring temperature and relative humidity (RH). Do not clean, oil, separate stuck leaves, repair cords or restring a valuable manuscript yourself until a trained conservator has examined it.

Why palm-leaf manuscripts crack, warp and grow mold

Palm leaf is an organic material whose condition changes with moisture, heat, light and handling. The two principal manuscript leaves are palmyra and talipot. Cornell University Library describes palmyra as thicker and more inflexible, while talipot is thinner and more flexible; talipot can survive as long as 600 years under suitable care. Those are material differences, not guarantees for an individual manuscript.

Dryness makes leaves brittle

Cornell summarizes the central risk plainly: palm leaf is susceptible to desiccation, loses flexibility and becomes brittle. As moisture leaves the cell walls, leaves can warp, split along their longitudinal veins and crack around incised writing. Cornell’s Indigenous Materials tutorial also identifies staining, splitting, cleavage and cord cutting as common damage mechanisms. A dry leaf may look sound until it is flexed, turned or threaded, when a hidden split suddenly becomes a break.

Excess moisture causes blocking and mold

High RH does not make a manuscript safer. Cornell reports that high humidity or severe mold can make leaves stick together in solid blocks. IFLA lists fungal or mould growth, insect damage, brittleness, cracking and stuck leaves among the characteristic conservation problems. Once leaves adhere, pulling them apart can tear the surface, remove writing or enlarge a cleavage.

Light accelerates visible change

Emory Libraries notes that temperature, RH and visible or ultraviolet light affect mold growth, pests, natural aging, decay, fading and discoloration. The Library of Congress warns that high light levels can make collection items fade, discolor and age. Palm leaves therefore need a dim, indirect location rather than a sunny display shelf.

Set a stable environment before treating the manuscript

Use RH evidence with the correct context

A 2025 study published in npj Heritage Science found no significant damage in the tested manuscripts at 50% RH. The same study observed severe warping and surface cracking at 10% and 30% RH, while humid conditions enabled fungal growth. This is study-specific evidence, not a universal magic number for every species, ink, oil history or building.

For mold control after an incident or after mold stains have been found, the Library of Congress gives a practical range of 35–55% RH. Use that range as emergency-control guidance, not as proof that every collection should be held at one exact set point. Stability matters as much as the reading: repeated dry-to-damp cycles make leaves expand and contract.

Evidence or situation What it establishes How to apply it
50% RH in the 2025 npj Heritage Science study No significant damage in that study’s specimens Use as a useful reference point while recognizing that materials and conditions differ
10% and 30% RH in the same study Severe warping and surface cracking Treat very dry storage as a serious risk, especially if leaves are already brittle
35–55% RH in Library of Congress mold guidance Range recommended to prevent mold regrowth after an incident Use while isolating and drying affected material; avoid rapid cycling

Monitor instead of guessing

Buy a digital thermo-hygrometer or an RH datalogger and place its sensor beside the manuscript’s storage location, not on a different floor or in a shaded outdoor area. A datalogger records temperature and RH over time, revealing overnight dampness, air-conditioner cycling or an unusually dry heating period. It does not diagnose the manuscript or replace a conservator.

  • RH accuracy across the range in which you store the manuscript.
  • A stated calibration method or calibration support.
  • Data logging if you need to identify daily or seasonal swings.
  • Alarms or notifications for excursions.
  • A sensor that can be positioned at the same height and inside the same room zone as the box.

Record readings in a simple log with date, time, temperature, RH and any visible change in the bundle. A single reassuring reading cannot reveal a room that becomes damp every night. If readings move rapidly, first stabilize the room and then ask a conservator to assess the manuscript before attempting treatment.

Control temperature without chasing a number

The available guidance does not establish one universal temperature for every palm-leaf collection. Keep the room away from heat sources, hot attics, exterior walls that condense moisture and equipment that blows warm or damp air directly at the box. Aim for a steady condition and avoid abrupt changes; a moderate, stable room is safer than a colder room that swings widely.

Reduce light exposure

Store the manuscript away from direct sunlight and strong visible or ultraviolet light. Use closed housing for routine storage and open the box only when necessary. The Library of Congress allows brief sunlight exposure in a narrow circumstance where fading, discoloration or yellowing is acceptable; that is not a routine drying or mold-treatment method for a valuable manuscript.

Choose housing that buffers change without pressing the leaves

Why an archival box helps

Emory explains that a protective box creates a microclimate that buffers temperature and RH changes and protects against dust, light and pests. Cornell recommends enclosing a cloth-wrapped palm-leaf manuscript in a file-folder wrapper, wrapping the cloth around that package and placing it in a clamshell box.

An archival clamshell or acid-free manuscript storage box is a sensible housing choice when its dimensions and board quality match the bundle. The box should close without squeezing the manuscript, and the interior should support the bundle rather than leave it sliding or sagging.

Housing choice RH buffering Light, dust and pest protection Pressure and access considerations
Open shelf or display surface Little buffering; exposed to room swings Low protection Easy access but high handling and light exposure
Cloth wrap alone Limited buffering Reduces dust but does not block light or pests fully Can allow a bundle to flex unless supported
File-folder wrapper plus cloth inside a clamshell box Better buffering when correctly sized Good exclusion of light and dust; box adds a pest barrier Supports the bundle if sized correctly; inspect without forcing the lid
Oversized or undersized box Unpredictable Protection may be compromised by gaps Oversized boxes permit movement; undersized boxes compress leaves

Pack the bundle step by step

  1. Prepare a clean, stable work surface away from food, liquids, direct sun and drafts.
  2. Keep the leaves in their existing order unless a conservator has documented a different arrangement.
  3. Place the manuscript in a file-folder wrapper as Cornell describes, using a folder large enough that no edge catches or bends.
  4. Wrap the cloth around the folder package rather than tying the cloth tightly around individual leaves.
  5. Set the wrapped package in a clamshell box with enough clearance that the lid closes without compression.
  6. Add inert, supportive packing only when a conservator or archival supplier has selected material that will not abrade the leaves or shed fibers.
  7. Label the box on the exterior so you do not repeatedly open it to identify the manuscript.

Compare any proposed box by RH buffering, light exclusion, dust and pest protection, pressure on the leaves, access convenience and whether it can be sized without forcing the bundle. A box that is technically archival but too small is a damaging box.

Handle the manuscript as a brittle bundle

Before opening

  • Wash and dry hands; remove jewelry, badges and anything that can catch a cord or leaf edge.
  • Clear the work area and support the full bundle with both hands or a rigid, padded support.
  • Open the housing only in subdued light and only for the task at hand.

While examining leaves

  • Handle as little as possible and avoid flexing individual leaves.
  • Do not force leaves apart when they are stuck together. Blocking can involve mold, softened surfaces or fused fibers.
  • Do not pull on sewing cords, lift the manuscript by a cord, or let a loose bundle hang from one tie.
  • Keep leaves flat and fully supported; do not bend a corner to read an inscription.
  • Photograph or note the order, cord position and visible damage before moving anything.

These precautions directly address the documented risks of brittleness, longitudinal splitting, cleavage, cord cutting and leaves becoming stuck together. Repeated casual handling can turn a stable crack into a detached fragment.

Respond to wet, damp or moldy material

Isolate first

Move wet, actively moldy or recently discovered damp material away from the rest of the collection. Keep the affected box separate while you control the ambient temperature and RH. Do not place a damp manuscript back into a shared cabinet or pile it with dry bundles.

Air-dry with environmental control

The Library of Congress recommends air-drying wet objects and maintaining 35–55% RH to prevent mold regrowth. Increase air exposure in a clean, controlled area without laying leaves on a hot surface or using direct sunlight. Separate only what can be separated without force; leaves that resist should remain together until a conservator assesses them.

For odor control, the Library of Congress describes loose charcoal or baking soda only as container adjuncts and says to check often for mold. Never put either material in contact with the leaves, cloth or writing. Neither material substitutes for drying and environmental control.

Recognize when the situation is urgent

Contact a trained manuscript conservator when you see visible mold, leaves stuck in blocks, severe cracking, losses, broken sewing or an unknown history of oiling. IFLA’s guidance is direct: treatment should be undertaken by a trained conservator. Tell the conservator when the material became wet, where it was stored, what RH readings you recorded and whether anyone applied oil or cleaner.

Do not brush active mold over another collection item, seal a damp bundle in airtight plastic, or use sunlight as a routine mold treatment. Those actions can spread contamination, trap moisture or accelerate fading and discoloration.

Cleaning, hydration and oil require specialist testing

Why dry cleaning is not automatically safe

Dust can sit in incised writing, cracks and cleavage. Rubbing a brittle leaf can remove friable surface material or drive dirt into a split. Cornell states that cleaning and hydrating very dry leaves should occur only after pre-treatment tests establish that the writing is incised and that the leaf is not saturated with oil. A conservator must test a representative area before choosing a method.

Historic oil practices are not universal recipes

Oil has a long treatment history, but no single oil is a guaranteed cure. Cornell’s FAQ records a specialist recommendation for a thin coat of colorless neem oil after water cleaning to restore some flexibility and repel insects. That recommendation is collection-specific and depends on the testing conditions; it is not a home-care instruction.

IFLA describes a traditional practice at the National Library of Sri Lanka in which special oil distilled from Vateria copallifera resins is mixed with charcoal powder, applied with cotton cloth and wiped free of excess. The reported aims are increased letter contrast and flexibility. Cornell warns that oil reapplied too often can darken the leaf.

Getty’s review records historic camphor-oil and polyethylene glycol (PEG) treatments and cautions that a humectant’s attraction to water can desiccate cell walls in medium-to-low RH environments. The Sri Lankan best-practices report likewise says traditional treatments were not sufficient by themselves after microscopic examination found hair cracks and rot fungus; this led to development of a hybrid method.

Treatment history Reported purpose or context Known caution Safe decision rule
Colorless neem oil Specialist recommendation after water cleaning to restore some flexibility and repel insects Requires testing for writing, oil saturation and condition; repeated oiling may darken leaves Only under conservator direction for the specific manuscript
Vateria copallifera resin oil with charcoal powder Traditional Sri Lankan practice intended to increase contrast and flexibility Traditional treatment alone was not validated as sufficient in microscopic examination Do not reproduce without specialist examination and documentation
Camphor oil Historic treatment recorded in Getty’s review Historic use does not establish safety for every leaf or writing medium Consider only as part of a documented conservation treatment
PEG Historic treatment and humectant approach recorded in Getty’s review Attraction to water can desiccate cell walls in medium-to-low RH environments Requires material-specific testing and environmental control

What a conservator should establish before treatment

  • Whether the writing is incised, painted, carbon-based or otherwise sensitive to moisture.
  • Whether previous oiling has saturated the leaf or introduced darkening.
  • Whether cracks, cleavage, insect channels or fungal damage are active.
  • Whether cleaning, humidification, oiling or repair can be reversed or safely retreated.
  • How the treatment will be documented so future custodians know what was applied.

Never add neem, resin, walnut, camphor or another household oil because a leaf feels dry. A treatment that temporarily increases flexibility can also darken the surface, attract contaminants or create a moisture problem later.

Repair, restringing and losses

Broken sewing and cord cutting are documented palm-leaf damage mechanisms, but restringing is not a simple replacement of a missing string. The holes may be enlarged, the leaves may no longer align, and tightening a new cord can concentrate pressure at existing cracks. A conservator should record the original order, hole locations, spacers and tension before any thread is removed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not punch new holes, trim split edges, laminate leaves, apply adhesive or flatten a warped bundle with weights. Those interventions can be irreversible and may obscure evidence about how the manuscript was made. Stabilization should support the bundle while preserving access to the writing and the possibility of later retreatment.

A practical preservation plan

  1. Survey the room. Identify sunlight, heating or cooling outlets, damp walls, roof leaks, kitchens and other sources of rapid RH change.
  2. Install monitoring. Place a digital thermo-hygrometer or RH datalogger beside the storage box and begin a dated log.
  3. Stabilize conditions. Avoid rapid RH cycling; use the Library of Congress 35–55% RH guidance when controlling mold regrowth after an incident.
  4. Reduce exposure. Keep the manuscript in subdued light and open the box only for necessary examination.
  5. Improve housing. Use Cornell’s file-folder, cloth-wrap and clamshell sequence, with a box sized to support rather than compress the bundle.
  6. Handle deliberately. Support the entire bundle, avoid flexing leaves and never force stuck leaves apart.
  7. Quarantine problems. Isolate wet or moldy material and keep it away from unaffected items.
  8. Call a conservator. Seek trained help for mold, blocks of stuck leaves, severe cracks, losses, broken cords, unknown oil history or any proposed cleaning and hydration.

How to choose between monitoring, housing and treatment options

When resources are limited, prioritize actions that prevent new damage and preserve future choices. Monitoring is usually the clearest first purchase because it reveals whether the storage room is dangerously dry or damp. Housing comes next when the manuscript is exposed to light, dust, pests or rapid room changes. Treatment belongs after examination, testing and documentation.

  • Choose monitoring first when you do not know the room’s RH pattern or suspect seasonal swings.
  • Choose improved housing first when the bundle sits in direct light, on an open shelf or in a box that presses or allows movement.
  • Choose urgent conservation first when mold, active wetness, stuck leaves, severe cracking, losses or broken sewing are present.
  • Decline a home oil treatment when the manuscript’s writing medium, previous oil history or RH conditions are unknown.

Preservation is successful when the manuscript remains readable, supported and treatable. The safest routine is therefore preventive: stable conditions, low light, protective housing, minimal handling and early professional assessment of change.
