Short answer: prepare your Tesla for FSD (Supervised) by confirming the car, software, hardware configuration and country are eligible; checking the package under Controls > Software; installing the required over-the-air update; reading your car’s current Owner’s Manual; and practicing attentive takeover. FSD (Supervised) is driver assistance, not autonomous driving. A Robotaxi is a separate, geographically limited service with its own safety-monitor, permit and regulatory requirements, so enabling FSD on a privately owned Tesla does not turn it into an unsupervised taxi.
What you are preparing for
Tesla uses several names for driving features that have very different operating assumptions. Autopilot and Tesla Assisted Driving Basic provide a narrower set of assisted-driving functions. FSD (Supervised) can perform more of the driving task, including navigation-related turns, lane changes, intersection handling and parking, but a human must continuously supervise it. Robotaxi is a separate ride service operated within Tesla’s approved service areas; it is not simply a software switch that a private owner can turn on.

Tesla’s current warning is unambiguous: “None of these advanced driver assistance features make your Tesla vehicle fully autonomous or replace you as the driver.” Tesla also says FSD (Supervised) “is an advanced driver assistance system that is intended to be used only with a fully attentive driver,” and that you remain responsible for the vehicle’s speed and control whenever the feature is enabled or disabled.

Check eligibility before spending money
Feature availability depends on the exact vehicle configuration, hardware, software version, model, trim, model year and region. Two Teslas that look similar can show different options, and a feature available in one country may be unavailable or restricted in another. Record the vehicle identification number (VIN), model year, model and trim, then use the Tesla account associated with that car and the menus in the car itself to determine what is actually offered.
- Vehicle identity: note the VIN, model, model year and trim shown in your Tesla account and registration documents.
- Jurisdiction: check the country and local regulatory environment tied to the vehicle. Tesla can change availability by geography.
- Hardware: do not assume that a particular camera or computer generation is eligible merely because another car of the same model is. Tesla’s eligibility check is configuration-specific.
- Software: record the installed version in the vehicle’s Software screen. FSD features require a qualifying software update before they become available.
If the car does not show the expected package, do not buy an aftermarket camera, computing device or other accessory as a workaround. The researched preparation instructions do not identify any physical add-on that unlocks FSD or Robotaxi service.
How the three driving options differ
Use this comparison to decide which preparation path applies to you. “Not stated” means Tesla has not established that detail in the operating information summarized here; it is not permission to infer one.

Step-by-step preparation for FSD (Supervised)
1. Identify the car and the country where it will operate
Start with the car physically in front of you, not a generic specification sheet. Open the Tesla app and select the vehicle, then record the model, model year and any trim or configuration information shown. Confirm the country in which the vehicle is registered and normally driven. If you recently imported the car, changed its account or moved countries, treat the displayed eligibility as authoritative rather than assuming the original market’s features carry over.
Keep the VIN available when contacting Tesla. It allows support to distinguish cars with different hardware or software histories that share the same model name.
2. Inspect the installed package in the car
- Park safely and open the touchscreen.
- Go to Controls > Software.
- Look for the wording Full Self-Driving Capability and note the FSD software information displayed there.
- Compare what the screen shows with the vehicle and region you recorded. If the package is absent or marked unavailable, resolve eligibility before subscribing.
Tesla also provides an upgrade route when your vehicle is eligible: in the Tesla app, open Upgrades > Software Upgrades > Subscribe, or use Controls > Upgrades in the car. The menu will not override hardware, software or regional restrictions.

3. Subscribe only after confirming eligibility
Tesla Support listed the FSD (Supervised) subscription at $99 USD per month on the page accessed October 19, 2026. Tesla states that price and availability can change, so treat that amount as a current listing rather than a permanent rate or a guarantee that the option is offered in every market. The subscription is a software entitlement; it is not a purchase of autonomous capability and it does not remove the duty to supervise.
Do not confuse a subscription with Robotaxi enrollment. A private FSD subscription does not establish that your vehicle can accept passengers without you, operate outside the approved service area or meet Tesla’s service and regulatory conditions.
4. Install the required over-the-air update
Tesla states that the vehicle must complete a software update before FSD (Supervised) features become available. Connect the car to reliable Wi-Fi when an update is offered and allow the installation to finish while the vehicle is parked. Keep the car connected to Wi-Fi when current navigation maps are needed as well.
After the update, return to Controls > Software and verify that the installed version and FSD package are shown. An interrupted or pending update is not the same as an installed feature. If the update is still queued, leave the vehicle parked, follow the touchscreen’s instructions and check again rather than attempting to use a feature that has not appeared.
5. Read the manual for this exact model and year
Controls and warnings differ by model and model year. In the car, open Controls > Service > Owner’s Manual. Read the sections covering Autopilot, FSD (Supervised), driver monitoring, disengagement, camera calibration, navigation and Summon. Use the touchscreen manual rather than relying on a video made for a different Tesla configuration.
Pay particular attention to the conditions that trigger warnings, how the car asks for driver input and which control cancels assistance. Knowing the cancellation method before a first drive is more useful than trying to discover it during an unexpected maneuver.

6. Make the cameras and driver-monitoring environment usable
Keep the driver’s view clear and make sure the cabin camera and steering-wheel attention checks can function. Do not cover, obstruct or deliberately defeat the camera. If the vehicle requests camera calibration, allow the process to complete before expecting the full feature set. Tesla’s Autopilot guidance also associates Navigate on Autosteer with camera calibration and current navigation maps.
- Remove anything that blocks the driver’s forward view or the cabin camera’s view of you.
- Sit in the normal driving position so the monitoring system can detect your attention.
- Respond promptly to attention prompts instead of waiting for repeated warnings.
- If calibration is incomplete, drive only as permitted by the currently available assistance and follow the screen’s instructions.
7. Plan a low-pressure first drive
Choose a familiar route with a safe place to pull over. Before enabling assistance, set your destination, check the route and identify the brake, gear control, scroll-wheel and steering inputs that cancel assistance on your car. Tesla’s controls vary, so confirm the exact method in the manual.
Keep both the driving task and the monitoring task in mind. FSD (Supervised) may steer, change lanes, follow navigation, handle intersections and park, but it can still make a decision that requires immediate correction. Watch the road, surrounding traffic, signs and the car’s path continuously; do not use a phone, read, sleep or position yourself so that a takeover would be delayed.

8. Practice disengaging before you need to
On a safe, legal stretch of road, practice the cancellation method described in your manual. Tesla’s guidance identifies braking, the gear control, the scroll wheel where equipped and manual steering as possible ways to disengage, depending on the vehicle. The purpose is familiarity, not a test of how long the system can continue. If the car asks you to take over, act immediately and smoothly.
Remember Tesla’s operating rule: “You are responsible for the speed and control of your vehicle at all times, whether FSD (Supervised) is enabled or not.” That responsibility does not transfer to the software when the car is following a route.
Hardware, maps and software: what actually matters
There is no universal hardware shortcut
Tesla’s eligibility statement lists vehicle configuration, hardware, software version, region, model, trim and model year as factors. It does not establish one universal hardware threshold that applies to every Tesla. The practical test is the package and feature status shown for your VIN in the Tesla app and vehicle menus.

Consequently, buying a third-party camera, display, computer or steering accessory cannot be treated as an FSD or Robotaxi upgrade. No physical accessory is required by the preparation instructions summarized here, and no aftermarket device is identified as a way to unlock unsupervised autonomy.
Updates and navigation data are separate checks
An up-to-date vehicle operating system is required before FSD features become available. Current navigation maps may also be required for Navigate on Autosteer. Connect to Wi-Fi when Tesla requests an update or map refresh, then confirm completion in the Software screen. If a feature disappears after a configuration or software change, recheck the displayed package and read any warning rather than assuming the hardware has failed.
What FSD (Supervised) can and cannot mean on a drive
When available and enabled, Tesla describes FSD (Supervised) as capable of steering, changing lanes, following navigation, negotiating intersections and parking. Those are driving tasks the system may perform under supervision, not promises that every road, maneuver or situation will be handled without intervention.
- It can assist with a route: navigation-related behavior depends on the route, current maps, software and region.
- It can perform maneuvers: steering, lane changes, intersection handling and parking remain subject to the system’s request for driver input.
- It does not replace the driver: Tesla explicitly says the feature is not fully autonomous and requires a fully attentive driver.
- It does not transfer liability: the driver remains responsible for speed and control.
Tesla’s support page reported “7x fewer major and minor collisions and 7x fewer off-highway collisions.” This is Tesla’s own vehicle-safety comparison, not an independent study; it should be read as a manufacturer-reported claim with Tesla’s chosen comparison and methodology, not as a guarantee for an individual trip.

A Tesla with FSD (Supervised) is still a privately operated vehicle requiring an attentive driver. Robotaxi service has a different operating model: Tesla controls where the service runs, which vehicles participate, what safety-monitor arrangements apply and which permits or regulatory approvals are in force.

The Austin launch included a safety rider; Tesla later reported limited removal of a safety monitor and planned expansion to additional metropolitan areas. Those conditions can change by location and date. A service that accepts a ride in one approved area does not establish availability in another city or country.
Before treating Robotaxi as an option, verify all of the following through Tesla’s current service information for your location:
- Whether the service operates in your exact pickup and destination area.
- Whether a safety rider or remote or in-vehicle monitor is required.
- Which vehicle types Tesla permits to participate.
- What local permits, insurance and operating restrictions apply.
- Whether the service is available to the public or limited to a staged program.
Tesla reported a global fleet data-collection capacity equivalent to more than 500 years of continuous driving per day in 2026, and more than 1 million kilometers driven by customers using FSD (Supervised) in South Korea during one month. These figures describe Tesla’s reported data scale; they do not change the supervision requirement for your car or prove that Robotaxi service is approved where you live.
Using Summon without confusing it with autonomy
Tesla describes Dumb Summon and Actually Smart Summon as low-speed, short-range features for situations such as a private car park or driveway. They require direct monitoring. They are not a way to send the car across town, collect passengers or operate as a driverless taxi.

Those limits are stated on that UK page and may not describe every market or later software version. Remain close enough to monitor the vehicle and stop the maneuver immediately if a person, object, surface or vehicle enters its path.
Troubleshooting: why a feature may be missing
“Full Self-Driving Capability” is not shown
- Recheck Controls > Software and the Tesla app’s upgrade area.
- Confirm the VIN, model year, trim and country are the ones associated with the car.
- Check whether the vehicle has a pending software update.
- Do not infer eligibility from another Tesla of the same model.
- If the package remains absent, contact Tesla with the VIN and the exact message shown.
The subscription is visible but FSD is unavailable
- Complete the required over-the-air update; a download that has not installed does not satisfy the requirement.
- Connect to Wi-Fi if Tesla requests current navigation maps.
- Read any camera-calibration or driver-monitoring warning and complete the requested procedure.
- Check whether the feature is restricted in your current region.
The car repeatedly asks for attention
Treat the warning as an operating requirement, not a nuisance to defeat. Restore a normal seated position, keep the cabin camera unobstructed, look at the road and respond promptly. If you are tired, distracted or unable to supervise, disengage assistance and drive manually or stop safely.
The car makes an unexpected maneuver
Take over immediately using the cancellation method for your model, then move to a safe location. Review the route, map status and the relevant Owner’s Manual section before trying again. Do not continue merely to see what the system does next; the driver’s responsibility remains in force throughout the event.
A practical readiness checklist
- ☐ VIN, model, trim, model year and operating country recorded.
- ☐ Controls > Software checked for Full Self-Driving Capability and the installed FSD software.
- ☐ Tesla app upgrade path checked: Upgrades > Software Upgrades > Subscribe, where eligible.
- ☐ Required over-the-air update installed completely.
- ☐ Wi-Fi available for updates and current navigation maps when requested.
- ☐ Controls > Service > Owner’s Manual reviewed for the exact model and year.
- ☐ Forward view and cabin camera unobstructed; calibration completed if requested.
- ☐ First route planned with a safe place to pull over.
- ☐ Brake, gear-control, scroll-wheel and steering disengagement methods practiced as applicable.
- ☐ Driver prepared to supervise continuously and take control without delay.
- ☐ Robotaxi availability checked separately from private-car FSD eligibility.
- ☐ Summon treated as a monitored, short-range feature rather than autonomous transport.

Bottom line
Prepare for Tesla’s current driving features by verifying your exact vehicle and region, checking the installed package, completing the required update, reading the model-specific manual and keeping every monitoring system usable. FSD (Supervised) can perform substantial driving tasks, but it is not autonomous and never removes the attentive driver from the loop. Robotaxi is a separately approved, location-dependent service; neither a subscription nor an aftermarket accessory makes a private Tesla an unsupervised taxi.
