Then remove cellular service as appropriate, erase the device to turn off Find My and Activation Lock, and follow your trade-in provider’s packing instructions.
1. Back up your iPhone before you start
Apple recommends making a backup and transferring information before removing personal data from the old iPhone. Have your Apple Account password ready. If you expect your phone number to change, add another trusted phone number to your Apple Account first so you have a way to verify your identity.

Apple supports three routes: Quick Start, restoring from an iCloud backup, or restoring from a computer backup made with Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes. Check that your backup completed before you begin setup on the new phone. Apple’s transfer guide describes the available methods.

Do not try to clean the old phone by manually deleting photos, contacts, or other content that syncs with iCloud. Deleting synced items can remove them from iCloud and your other connected devices too. Erase the iPhone only after the transfer is verified.

2. Choose a transfer method and let it finish
| Method | What you need | What to expect |

| Quick Start | Your current and new iPhones nearby; Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled; power for both phones. | A direct migration keeps both phones occupied. Leave them close together and connected to power until the transfer finishes on both devices. |

For Quick Start, unlock the old iPhone, turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and bring it next to the new iPhone. Follow the on-screen setup prompts. Keep both phones close and powered until the migration is complete; Apple notes that an iCloud download can continue in the background instead. See Apple’s Quick Start instructions.
Before you erase the old phone, open the new one and check that the information you rely on—such as photos, messages, contacts, and essential apps—is present or continuing to download. Also confirm that you can sign in to your Apple Account. If anything important is missing, stop and resolve the transfer or backup before proceeding.

3. Unpair devices and check the phone before handoff
- Apple Watch: If the watch is paired with the iPhone, unpair it before trading in the phone.
- Repair status: Check Settings for Parts and Service History. If you see “Finish Repair,” resolve it before trade-in.
- Physical SIM: Remove the SIM card before sending the phone.
- eSIM: Contact your wireless provider about transferring or suspending service. Carrier procedures vary, so use the provider’s instructions for your plan and device.
Apple’s trade-in preparation guidance covers these handoff checks. Don’t assume that erasing the phone alone will cancel or move your cellular service.

- On the old iPhone, open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- Enter the device passcode or Apple Account credentials if prompted.
- If asked what to do with an eSIM on a phone you are selling, choose the option to erase the device and its eSIM profile. Confirm with your wireless provider that service has been transferred or suspended as needed.
Erasing removes personal content and turns off Find My and Activation Lock, allowing the next owner to set up the iPhone. Apple explains the process in its before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone guide. Do not substitute manually deleting iCloud-synced items for this erase process.

If the iPhone has already left your hands
If you sold or gave away the phone without erasing it, Apple advises contacting the new owner and asking them to erase it if possible. For a lost or stolen iPhone, use Find Devices on iCloud.com, remove the phone from your trusted devices, and secure your account. Apple’s account-safe erasure guidance covers these cases.
If you are moving to a non-Apple phone, deregister iMessage so messages can reach your new device. Follow Apple’s iMessage deregistration instructions.

5. Pack it according to the trade-in provider’s rules
For an Apple mail-in trade-in, use the supplied kit and match the iPhone to its shipping paperwork. Apple says the kit includes packing materials and warns that cases, cables, adapters, and other extras sent with the phone will not be returned. Other trade-in providers can have different packaging and shipping requirements, so use the instructions supplied for that specific transaction. See Apple’s mail-in trade-in instructions.
