Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStart now by building one complete, auditable ledger for every exchange, broker, custodial account, wallet and blockchain address you have used. Export each platform’s history at least every three months and before closing an account, preserve the original files, reconcile them with on-chain data, and retain the evidence for five years from the later relevant record, transaction or capital-gains-tax event point. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) accepts electronic records, but material not in English must be translatable to English.
This preparation matters because the OECD Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF) is designed for automatic exchange of transaction information between tax authorities. Australia’s Treasury is consulting on draft legislation as of 15 October 2026; the consultation closes on 28 October 2026, so the final Australian start date and detailed obligations remain subject to enacted law.

What records the ATO expects you to keep
The ATO says you must keep records of each crypto asset and every transaction so you can work out a capital gain or loss. A usable record connects the transaction, the asset, its Australian-dollar value and the evidence supporting your calculation. Keep the following for every acquisition, disposal, exchange, transfer or other event that may affect your tax position:
- Receipt or proof of the transaction: an exchange confirmation, invoice, payment record, contract note or other contemporaneous evidence.
- Date and time: record the date, and retain the platform timestamp or blockchain timestamp where available. Note the time zone used by the exchange.
- Asset and quantity: identify the token or coin and the number of units received, disposed of, exchanged or transferred.
- Transaction purpose: state whether it was an investment purchase, sale, crypto-to-crypto exchange, payment for goods or services, reward, gift, loan, staking-related receipt or an internal wallet transfer.
- Counterparty information: retain the other party’s name or business details when known, and the sending and receiving blockchain addresses for on-chain activity.
- Australian-dollar value at the time: document the exchange rate, pricing source, quote currency, timestamp and conversion method used to determine the AUD value.
- Costs: include trading commissions, spreads where separately identifiable, network or gas fees, withdrawal charges and other incidental costs relevant to the transaction.
- Exchange records: save account statements, order history, fills, deposits, withdrawals, fee reports and tax documents supplied by each provider.
- Wallet records: preserve transaction hashes, token quantities, timestamps, fees and addresses for hardware, software, mobile, browser and self-hosted wallets.
- Related software costs: retain invoices and payment evidence for software or services used to maintain, track or transact with the assets when those costs are relevant to your tax records.
Do not rely on a portfolio balance or a screenshot alone. A balance does not show the acquisition date, cost base, disposal proceeds, fee treatment or movement between addresses. Keep the underlying export and a readable copy of any report you generate from it.

Build an inventory before exporting anything
Create a master list covering every relevant tax year. Include accounts that are now inactive and addresses that you used only once. The inventory should identify the service or wallet, account holder, country or region if shown, account identifier, dates used and where the exported files will be stored.
Accounts and wallets to include
- Centralised exchanges and crypto brokers, including accounts opened briefly for a single purchase.
- Fiat on-ramps, payment services and platforms that converted Australian dollars or another fiat currency into crypto.
- Decentralised-application interfaces and any provider that executed swaps or transfers on your behalf.
- Hardware, desktop, browser, mobile and paper-backed wallets.
- Every public blockchain address you controlled or used, including deposit, withdrawal, staking, lending and smart-contract addresses.
- Accounts held jointly, through a trust, for a business or on behalf of another person, with ownership and authority noted separately.
Use a consistent naming convention
Name files with the account or wallet, covered dates and export date, for example ExchangeA_trades_2024-07-01_to_2024-09-30_exported_2024-10-01.csv. Keep the original unedited file and make any cleaned or converted version a separate copy. Record who exported it and which account or address produced it.
Export exchange histories on a three-month cycle
The ATO’s 2024 guidance advises exporting transaction histories at least every three months and before closing an account. Regular exports reduce the risk that an exchange changes its interface, limits an API, deletes old statements or locks an account after a security review.
- Sign in and verify the account: use the provider’s official account-security process. Confirm that the account name and reporting period are visible in the export or statement.
- Download all relevant categories: obtain trades and fills, deposits, withdrawals, fiat movements, conversions, staking or rewards, lending activity, derivatives if applicable, fee reports and monthly or annual statements.
- Select the full date range: export from the first day you used the account through the current date. If the platform imposes a maximum range, export consecutive periods without gaps.
- Preserve the raw files: save CSV, spreadsheet, PDF and JSON formats when offered. Do not overwrite the original after changing column names or formats.
- Record the export details: note the export date, time zone, account identifier, filters, currency display and whether the file is complete or paginated.
- Check for omissions: compare the opening and closing balances with the account dashboard and look for missing fills, fees, internal transfers or failed orders.
Some providers separate spot trading, instant conversion, card spending and withdrawals into different reports. Treat each report as a source and reconcile them rather than assuming one “transaction history” file contains everything.

Export wallet and blockchain evidence
Wallet software often shows only a convenience view. Preserve the transaction hash and the blockchain data needed to reproduce the entry later. For each on-chain transaction, capture the asset, quantity, timestamp, network fee, sending address, receiving address, transaction status and any contract or application involved.
Wallet-export checklist
- Export the wallet’s activity file if the software provides one.
- Record every public address and the network it belongs to; similar-looking addresses on different networks are not interchangeable.
- Use a blockchain explorer to retrieve historical transactions when the wallet interface is incomplete, as the ATO suggests.
- Save the transaction hash and a readable transaction-detail page or downloaded data file.
- Capture token transfers initiated by smart contracts, not only the transaction’s native-coin fee.
- Record failed, reverted or replaced transactions and any fee charged for them.
Separate internal transfers from disposals
A movement between two wallets you control is an internal transfer, not automatically a disposal. Add a note linking the sending address and receiving address, identify both as controlled by you, and retain evidence of the transfer fee. Without that explanation, the same units can appear to be sold from one wallet and acquired in another, creating a false capital gain or loss.
Create a master ledger with ATO fields
Combine exchange files, wallet data and supporting documents in a master ledger. Keep the original source reference in every row so another person can trace the number back to a file, statement or transaction hash.
| Ledger field | What to enter | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Asset | Token name, symbol and network where relevant | Exchange statement, wallet export or transaction detail |
| Date and time | Timestamp and time zone used | Platform timestamp or blockchain timestamp |
| Transaction type | Buy, sell, crypto-to-crypto exchange, payment, reward, gift, transfer or other event | Order, fill, invoice, contract or transaction hash |
| Purpose | Investment, payment, transfer between own wallets, staking, lending or another purpose | Receipt, note, agreement or contemporaneous explanation |
| Counterparty or address | Known person or business and sending/receiving address | Invoice, account record and on-chain data |
| Quantity | Units received, disposed of, transferred or charged as a fee | Fill, wallet record or contract event |
| AUD value | Value at the transaction time, with conversion method and source | Rate capture, statement or pricing record |
| Costs | Trading, network, withdrawal and other relevant fees | Fee report, receipt or transaction detail |
| Source reference | File name, row number, account and transaction hash | Unmodified source file and backup |
Use one row per economically distinct event. A crypto-to-crypto swap normally needs both the asset disposed of and the asset received, with the AUD value and fees allocated consistently. A withdrawal may need an exchange row and a corresponding wallet-transfer row, linked by the hash or withdrawal identifier.

Value transactions in Australian dollars
Record the AUD value at the time each transaction occurred, not merely the year-end portfolio value. Document the pricing source, quote currency, timestamp, conversion rate and any spread or fee included in the figure. If the platform reports in United States dollars or another currency, preserve the original amount and the method used to convert it to AUD.
When a token has several markets, apply a consistent method and write down why the selected market was available to you at that time. If the exchange export and your ledger use different time zones, normalize the timestamps and retain the original values so the conversion can be audited.
Document uncertainty instead of silently filling gaps
If you cannot establish an exact acquisition cost, date or valuation, flag the row and describe the evidence available and the assumption used. Do not replace a missing value with a portfolio application’s estimate without retaining the underlying rate and calculation. A clear uncertainty note is more defensible than an unexplained number.

- Reconcile exchange balances: compare opening balance plus deposits and acquisitions, less disposals, withdrawals and fees, with the closing balance for each asset.
- Match withdrawals to wallet receipts: connect each exchange withdrawal to the receiving address, transaction hash and network fee.
- Match wallet outflows: identify whether each outflow was a sale, swap, payment, fee, smart-contract interaction or transfer to another wallet you control.
- Remove duplicates: a single withdrawal may appear in an exchange export, wallet export and explorer data. Keep all evidence but mark one ledger event as the primary record.
- Check quantities and decimals: confirm token precision, network and contract address before aggregating units.
- Investigate gaps: list missing periods, unavailable account statements, unidentified addresses and unsupported cost-base entries.
- Document assumptions: retain a reconciliation log showing the issue, evidence reviewed, conclusion and date of the decision.
If an account has been closed or its history is missing, contact the exchange promptly and request statements or transaction data. The ATO also suggests using a blockchain explorer to recreate missing on-chain records. A reconstructed record should identify what came directly from the chain and what was inferred from another source.

Organise records around CARF categories
CARF, described by the OECD as an automatic exchange framework, covers reporting of relevant crypto-asset activity by reporting providers. The categories below are useful for organising your ledger even before Australia’s final rules are enacted.
| CARF-related category | Examples to classify | Preparation action |
|---|---|---|
| Crypto-to-fiat exchange | Buying or selling crypto for Australian dollars, euros, US dollars or another fiat currency | Keep the fiat amount, crypto quantity, AUD conversion, fees and provider statement |
| Crypto-to-crypto exchange | Swapping one crypto-asset for another, including an application-mediated swap | Record both assets, quantities, timestamp, valuation method, fee and transaction hash |
| Transfers | Deposits, withdrawals and transfers to external wallet addresses | Keep sending and receiving addresses, hash, network, fee and ownership note |
| Retail-payment information | Information a reporting provider may supply about crypto used for retail payments | Preserve invoices, payment confirmations, merchant details and asset values |
The OECD says providers report aggregate amounts, units and transaction counts by asset and transaction type. Australia’s 2024 consultation proposed that reporting providers send the ATO user identity, tax-residence and transaction information, including transfers to external wallet addresses. Your own ledger should therefore connect each address and account to the correct legal owner and tax residence, rather than treating addresses as anonymous labels.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is proposed for Australia in 2026
As of 15 October 2026, Treasury is consulting on draft legislation that would introduce an Australian CARF framework and a domestic resident-transaction reporting regime. The consultation period runs from 15 October to 28 October 2026. Until Parliament enacts legislation and the government publishes final rules, implementation dates, registration requirements, reporting thresholds, provider definitions and penalties are not settled.

The OECD announced on 2 October 2024 that the first CARF information exchanges were expected to commence in 2027. That OECD expectation does not itself set Australia’s legal commencement date. Treat 2027 as the OECD’s stated first-exchange expectation, not as a confirmed Australian filing deadline.
Best Value
How to prepare without assuming the proposal is law
- Classify records into fiat exchanges, crypto-to-crypto exchanges, transfers and retail-payment activity.
- Keep identity and tax-residence details consistent across providers and accounts.
- Retain external-wallet addresses and ownership explanations, including addresses used only for deposits or withdrawals.
- Preserve records for the full ATO retention period regardless of whether a provider has reported anything.
- Check final legislation and ATO implementation guidance before relying on a proposed date or data field.
Retention, language and electronic storage requirements
Keep the evidence for five years from the later relevant record, transaction or capital-gains-tax event point under the ATO guidance cited above. Apply the rule to source exports, reconciliations, receipts, valuation workpapers, wallet evidence and explanations—not just the final tax return.
Electronic storage is acceptable. Maintain at least two independent copies, such as a local encrypted copy and a separate backup, and test that files can be opened and read. Keep a human-readable export alongside database or application files so you are not dependent on one software product remaining available.
Records must be in English or capable of being translated to English. For non-English statements, retain the original and a translation or an explanatory translation record that identifies the translator, date and document covered. Do not discard the original language version.
A practical folder structure
01_Exchange_Exports— raw CSV, JSON and PDF statements by provider and period.02_Wallet_and_Explorer— wallet exports, address lists, hashes and explorer captures.03_Ledger_and_Reconciliation— master ledger, matching files and assumption log.04_Receipts_and_Contracts— invoices, payment evidence, gifts, loans and service records.05_Valuation_and_Fees— AUD conversion evidence, fee reports and software invoices.06_Identity_and_Residence— account ownership and tax-residence evidence relevant to reporting.
Use read-only or versioned storage for the originals. If you encrypt a backup, keep the recovery information separately and document who can access it. A backup that cannot be decrypted when requested is not a usable record.
Common failure modes and fixes
| Problem | Why it matters | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Only keeping a year-end balance | It does not establish dates, cost base, proceeds or fees. | Export transaction-level history and retain source evidence. |
| Exporting once and closing the account | Historical data may become unavailable or incomplete. | Export before closure and request a final statement. |
| Treating every wallet movement as a sale | Transfers between your own wallets can be misclassified as disposals. | Link both addresses and record your ownership explanation. |
| Ignoring network and withdrawal fees | Fees affect quantities and relevant cost or proceeds calculations. | Capture fee units, AUD value and the transaction that charged them. |
| Mixing networks or token contracts | Identical symbols can represent different assets. | Record network and contract details where applicable. |
| Using an unexplained price estimate | The AUD figure cannot be reproduced. | Save the rate source, timestamp, quote currency and calculation. |
| Deleting “duplicate” files | Different exports may contain distinct fields or prove completeness. | Keep originals and mark duplicate ledger rows instead of deleting evidence. |
| Relying on a tax application’s import alone | Imports can omit unsupported products, fees or contract events. | Compare the application output with raw exchange and chain records. |
When to seek specialist help
Consider professional advice when transactions involve a business or trust, lending, staking, derivatives, decentralised-finance contracts, wrapped assets, gifts, lost keys, insolvency of a provider, multiple tax residences or records that cannot be reconstructed. Give an adviser the raw exports, wallet-address map, reconciliation log and list of unresolved assumptions. A summary report without its underlying evidence makes review slower and may conceal missing events.
Keep the factual record separate from your tax conclusion. The ledger should show what happened; a workpaper can then explain the tax treatment applied to that event and identify the rule or advice relied on.
A repeatable quarterly routine
- Export every exchange and broker account used during the quarter.
- Export or update every wallet and public-address history.
- Save originals with provider, date range and export date in the filename.
- Import copies into the master ledger and preserve source references.
- Match deposits, withdrawals and internal transfers across accounts and addresses.
- Update AUD values, fees, receipts, purpose and counterparty details.
- Run balance checks and investigate missing rows, duplicate rows and unexplained changes.
- Update the assumption and unresolved-items log.
- Create a readable backup and verify that it opens.
- Repeat immediately before closing any account or changing wallet software.
This routine gives you a contemporaneous evidence trail instead of a rushed reconstruction at tax time, while leaving room to adapt the ledger if Australia’s final CARF legislation changes the provider data or reporting categories.
