Before installing a Windows 11 feature update, back up important files, check available storage, connect a laptop or tablet to power, and see whether Windows Update offers the upgrade for your PC. Update availability and space needs vary by device, so follow Windows’ prompts rather than forcing an update that has not been offered.
Before you start: a short checklist
- Back up important files and confirm the backup contains them.
- Check Settings > System > Storage and review Windows’ cleanup recommendations.
- Connect a laptop or tablet to power and save open work before restarting.
- Open Settings > Windows Update to check whether the feature update is offered for this PC.
- Choose a convenient time for any required restart.
Back up files you cannot afford to lose
Microsoft recommends backing up files before installing Windows 11. Its preparation guidance describes using OneDrive to back up the Documents, Pictures, and Desktop folders, but you can use another backup method you trust. Check that the important files are actually present in the backup before proceeding; a backup reduces risk but cannot guarantee against data loss. Microsoft’s Windows 11 installation guidance explains the available preparation and installation options.

Check whether the update is ready for your PC
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and review what Windows offers for this device.
- If the feature update is offered, follow the on-screen instructions and restart when prompted.
- If Windows says the upgrade is not ready, check Microsoft’s current compatibility information rather than trying to bypass the delay.
Windows 11 feature updates are normally delivered through Windows Update after Microsoft has tested and validated the upgrade for a particular PC. A delay can have several causes. Microsoft says that when a compatibility issue likely to disrupt the experience is identified, it may temporarily delay the upgrade until the issue is resolved; that does not mean every delay is caused by a safeguard hold. Microsoft’s PC Health Check guidance describes this compatibility-based approach.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe Windows Update Assistant is a possible manual route for compatible PCs that have not received a feature update automatically. Microsoft says it supports x86/64-based devices, not ARM-based PCs. Treat it as a fallback, not a required step when Windows Update has not offered the upgrade. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 Installation Assistant page for eligibility and instructions.

Check storage and use Windows’ cleanup tools
- Go to Settings > System > Storage to see what is using space.
- Open Cleanup recommendations and remove only files or content you understand and no longer need.
- Review Storage Sense settings if you want Windows to help remove temporary files and Recycle Bin contents.
- If Windows reports that more space is needed, follow its instructions; it may offer the option to use external storage temporarily.
There is no single free-space threshold that applies to every Windows 11 feature update. Microsoft’s current support guidance says feature updates typically require 6–11 GB or more, while its examples for Windows 11 update paths range from 4.5 GB or more for a minimal-content path using external storage to 20 GB or more for a path optimized to reduce offline time. Actual needs depend on the update path, installed optional features, languages, and other updates. These figures are examples, not a guarantee or a device-specific minimum. Microsoft’s storage guidance for Windows updates explains the trade-offs.
Those update paths balance disk space against how long the PC may be unavailable during installation. A path designed to reduce offline time can use more space; a minimal-space path can mean a longer offline install. Microsoft also says Windows may use temporary space to support removal of an update, typically for 10 days. That space is for rollback and is temporary, not a permanent storage requirement.

Start with built-in cleanup; buying a drive is not a routine requirement. If Windows reports insufficient system-drive space and offers external storage, an external USB drive may be a useful conditional option. Use it only as directed by Windows, and avoid removing optional Windows features you rely on. Microsoft’s guidance on Storage Sense and storage management covers the built-in tools.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Plan for power, work, and restart time
Save your work and close apps before restarting. Keep laptops and tablets plugged in while updates may install, especially if the device could restart outside your active hours. You can adjust active hours in Windows Update settings to reduce the chance of an inconvenient restart. Download and installation time varies with connection speed, network settings, and update size, so allow a flexible window instead of relying on a fixed duration. If the update is delayed or fails
- For a Windows 11 update failure, start the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app.
- Note the exact error message or code, then follow the Microsoft troubleshooting steps that match it.
- Check common causes such as insufficient disk space, connectivity problems, or a pending restart.
- If the feature update is not offered, confirm the PC’s readiness and compatibility before considering the Installation Assistant on supported hardware.
Use current, device-specific instructions for the error you see rather than assuming the update should be forced. Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guide provides the recommended starting point and links to error-specific help.
