To prepare for shipping delays and freight rate increases, identify which shipments cannot arrive late, track their milestones and route conditions, and agree on fallback options with your carrier or freight forwarder before a disruption forces a rushed decision. For each feasible option, compare delivery reliability and total cost—including applicable surcharges—using current, lane-specific information. Market updates are snapshots, not quotes for your shipment.
Why delays can push freight costs up
Congestion can tie up vessels and reduce the capacity effectively available to move cargo, while making schedules less reliable. Route changes, weather, labor issues, and operational constraints can also affect transit time and cost. UNCTAD’s Review of Maritime Transport 2025 reports that port congestion contributed to higher freight rates in 2024 and into 2025, alongside other disruptions. That history explains how the effects can be connected; it does not predict rates for a particular lane in October 2026.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s 2026 National Freight Strategic Plan treats resilience, efficiency, security, and visibility as priorities for an interdependent freight network. In its May 18, 2026 announcement, USDOT said, “More than 54 million tons of goods valued at $68 billion travel through America’s freight network every day.” That is a statement about the U.S. freight network, not global freight volume.
Build a plan around shipment priorities
Map shipments and deadlines
List the shipments that matter to operations, with origin, destination, mode, cargo-ready date, delivery deadline, and any dependencies such as production schedules or customer commitments. Flag shipments that rely on a single route or supplier, or have little room for delay. Separate those that need a contingency from those that can tolerate a later arrival.
#1 Best Overall
- Accurate to 0.1oz: High precision for postage, packaging, or food preparation.
- Solid design with high weight limit: 50Lbs
- Smart Tare & Hold Functions: Effortlessly subtract container weight or lock readings for larger boxes.
- Clear LCD Display: Large, backlit screen makes weights easy to read, even in dim rooms.
- Multi-measuring units: Kg, lb/oz, oz
Set decision points before a disruption
Agree internally on what would trigger an action and who can approve it. Depending on the cost of a missed delivery and the alternatives available, a trigger might lead to expediting, rerouting, drawing down buffer stock, or notifying customers. There is no universal delay threshold: choose one that reflects the shipment’s business importance and the time needed to act.
Track milestones and verify estimates
Monitor shipment milestones and obtain current lead-time estimates from the carrier or forwarder. Ask what has changed in the route, schedule, allocation, or cargo cutoff, and when the next status update is expected. Better supply-chain visibility and data-driven planning are among the priorities in USDOT’s 2026 National Freight Strategic Plan; for an individual shipment, the practical step is to use current shipment data and confirm its meaning with the provider.
Rank #2
- Digital shipping postal scale for weighing items; heavy duty yet lightweight, portable design
- Includes a postal scale and an AC adapter; black ABS with an aluminum anti-skid platform
- 660 pound (300kg) capacity reads to 0.11 pound/50g/2 ounce in 0.1 ounce increments; minimum load weight is 6 ounces (150g)
- Measuring units in kg, ounces, and pounds
- Additional separated large back-lit LCD display allows for reading the weighing data from a distance of up to 2m
Ask about alternatives while there is time
Contact the carrier or freight forwarder early if a shipment has a tight deadline or a route appears exposed. Ask which alternative routings, ports, services, or modes are feasible for the cargo, and whether capacity is actually available. Confirm the cargo-ready date, booking cutoff, allocation, expected arrival, and what fallback remains if the first option slips.

Booking guidance depends on lane and market conditions. Flexport’s July 9, 2026 logistics update offered lane-specific advance-booking guidance for that period. It is a dated market snapshot, not a general booking rule or a current booking window for every shipment.
Rank #3
- Digital tabletop postal scale for quickly and precisely weighing items
- Includes a shipping postal scale and AC adapter; made of durable black ABS, aluminum, and iron
- 65 pound (30kg) capacity reads to 0.1 ounce (1g) in 0.1 ounce increments; minimum load weight is 0.2 ounces (5g)
- Extra large LCD display for easy viewing; measuring units in ounces, pounds, g, and kg
- Tare function for resetting the scale to zero after setting a container on the platform; great for net weights
Compare service options by total cost and delivery risk
When more than one option is feasible, request current, like-for-like quotes and written confirmation of the charges that apply. Compare the factors that determine whether an option is both affordable and usable:
- Delivery: expected arrival, schedule variability, and whether the service can meet the required date.
- Total cost: base freight, applicable fuel or emergency surcharges, inland transport, handling, insurance, and the business cost of delay.
- Capacity certainty: confirmed allocation, cargo-ready date, cutoff, and the availability of a fallback.
- Operational fit: cargo handling requirements, route exposure, and whether the shipment can switch modes or ports.
Carrier notices show why surcharge scope must be checked rather than assumed. Maersk’s March 16, 2026 Hormuz closure freight and service update and CMA CGM’s Middle East situation updates, including a July 21, 2026 surcharge advisory, describe changes tied to particular disruptions and operating conditions. Their terms do not establish a universal charge. Check the contract and current carrier notices for each shipment’s applicable charge, effective date, and trade or loading-date scope.

Review open shipments and update stakeholders
Revisit the plan when a route, lead-time estimate, capacity allocation, or charge changes. Update procurement and operations on the revised cost and delivery assumptions, and tell customers when a change affects a commitment. For maritime shipments, the Federal Maritime Commission’s News and Advisories is a regulatory source for maritime notices, including detention-fee matters; check relevant notices alongside carrier communications.
Rates, lead times, and surcharge applicability are specific to the lane, mode, carrier, shipment, and date. The cited market updates cannot supply a current quote or booking window for an unspecified shipment. Before committing a budget or booking, verify live conditions and obtain lane-specific terms directly from the carrier or forwarder.
