To turn on FPS Boost for a supported game on Xbox Series X, open My games & apps, highlight the game, press the controller’s Menu button, then go to Manage game and add-ons > Compatibility options and check FPS Boost. Many supported games enable it automatically; the option is available only for select backward-compatible titles.
Turn on FPS Boost for a game
- From the Xbox dashboard, open My games & apps.
- Highlight the supported game you want to play.
- Press the controller’s Menu button.
- Select Manage game and add-ons.
- Open Compatibility options.
- Check FPS Boost if you want to enable it. Launch or restart the game as needed, then compare its presentation with the setting off.
Microsoft’s February 17, 2021 announcement introduced a Compatibility Options control in a game’s management area for toggling FPS Boost and Auto HDR. The detailed path above is reported by Windows Central; dashboard labels and behavior can vary by title.

Is FPS Boost automatic?
Many supported games activate FPS Boost automatically, but some require you to enable it in Compatibility options. A dated title reference lists Far Cry 4 as automatically boosted to 60 FPS and Fallout 4 as reaching 60 FPS without automatic activation; treat these as examples, not a current or complete support list.
Why is FPS Boost missing or unavailable?
- The title may not support it. FPS Boost applies to selected backward-compatible games, not every Xbox Series X title.
- Check the game-specific menu. Highlight the game first, then open its own Manage game and add-ons > Compatibility options screen.
- Do not rely on an unofficial list as definitive. Microsoft’s support page titled “FPS Boost and Auto HDR” did not provide readable article text when accessed, and its 2021 Xbox Wire announcement covered the initial titles rather than a complete current catalog. The console’s Compatibility options for the installed game is the practical check.
Microsoft’s original announcement says the backward compatibility team designed FPS Boost to raise frame rates on select titles without developer work or a game update, using techniques that can nearly double the original frame rate and, in a few instances, quadruple it. Do you need a 120 Hz TV or monitor?
No, not to enable FPS Boost or benefit from a supported game boosted below 120 FPS. Some supported games can reach 120 FPS; to see that full output, your display needs a 120 Hz refresh rate. Microsoft’s 2021 announcement specifically said New Super Lucky’s Tale could run up to 120 FPS with FPS Boost. That is an announced capability, not a result guaranteed for every title or display setup.
When should you turn FPS Boost off?
In some games, the higher frame rate can come with reduced visual enhancements. Windows Central reports that FPS Boost can remove Xbox One X enhancements in some cases, citing Fallout 4 and Fallout 76. If you prefer the original enhanced presentation, return to that game’s Compatibility options and uncheck FPS Boost. Compare smoothness and image quality with the toggle on and off; the preferred setting can differ by game.
