Before your appointment: confirm what this scan requires
Check the appointment instructions and contact the imaging center if they do not explain what to do. General MRI guidance says food, drink, and medication instructions can vary by exam; continue your normal routine unless the center or your clinician tells you otherwise. A preventive whole-body MRI does not have one preparation schedule established for every provider.

- Ask whether you may eat and drink normally and whether to take your regular medicines.
- Check what to wear, when to arrive, and whether the center will provide a gown.
- Ask whether contrast is planned and whether the protocol calls for any specific preparation.

Fill out the safety questionnaire carefully and tell the MRI team about anything that could affect whether or how the scan is performed. Do not decide on your own that an implant or metal item is safe or unsafe: the team must assess it.

- Report implants and devices, including pacemakers, and provide details or device documentation if requested.
- Disclose previous surgery, metal fragments, or a possible retained foreign object.
- Tell staff about relevant medical history and any change since you completed the questionnaire.
- If contrast may be used, mention kidney disease or failure, a kidney transplant, liver disease, or a previous reaction to gadolinium contrast.
- Tell the center if you are pregnant or might be pregnant. The clinician and MRI team should decide whether to proceed and whether contrast is appropriate.
RadiologyInfo.org’s MRI safety guidance describes the need to screen for conditions and objects that may pose risks in the magnetic-field environment. The fact that a scan is preventive does not remove the need for this screening.
If you are anxious about enclosed spaces
Contact the center before scan day if you have claustrophobia or anxiety. Ask what scanner is used and what accommodations are available, and discuss medication with your clinician rather than taking a sedative on your own.
RadiologyInfo.org advises: “If you have claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces) or anxiety, ask your doctor to prescribe a mild sedative prior to the date of your exam.” If your clinician prescribes a sedative, follow the directions and arrange a ride home; do not drive yourself after taking it.
On scan day: remove metal and follow staff directions
Before entering the MRI room, leave jewelry, watches, phones, hearing aids, removable dental work, and other metal or electronic items outside as directed. Ask staff about anything you are unsure of, including piercings or an item whose materials you do not know. Follow the center’s clothing instructions; many facilities provide a gown because clothing may contain metal.
Tell staff about new or changed information since your screening form, including any newly identified implant, injury, or possible metal exposure. Do not bring an item into the MRI room unless the staff has cleared it.

MRI scanners make loud noises, so use the earplugs or headphones the facility supplies or approves. You will need to lie still while images are taken, and staff may ask you to hold your breath briefly. The technologist can see and communicate with you during the scan; follow their instructions and let them know if you need help.
