How to Choose a MagSafe Charger for Your iPhone

The right MagSafe charger depends on your iPhone model, the charger’s part number, and a suitable USB-C adapter. Learn how to check Apple’s peak-rate requirements and compare Qi2-certified options.

Choose a MagSafe charger by matching three things: your exact iPhone model, the charger’s generation or model number, and a USB-C power adapter with the required output. Apple’s advertised peak rates apply only to listed combinations and are not guaranteed charging speeds. A Qi2-certified magnetic charger is another option, but check its exact model and your iPhone’s supported rate before buying.

Start with your iPhone model

Most iPhones can charge with Apple’s MagSafe Charger, but magnetic attachment and charging performance depend on the model. iPhones that support MagSafe snap into magnetic alignment. A Qi-compatible iPhone without MagSafe can charge when centered on the charger, but it does not attach magnetically and its power and charge time can differ. Apple’s model guidance is available in its MagSafe chargers and battery packs for iPhone guide.

Check the exact model rather than relying on a broad label such as “iPhone 15 or later.” Apple’s listed peak rates distinguish among models and charger part numbers; the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini, for example, have a lower stated ceiling than the higher-rate combinations.

Match the charger and adapter to Apple’s listed rate

Apple’s support guidance, published March 31, 2026, lists the following peak wireless charging combinations. “Up to” is a ceiling for the specified setup, not a promise that the phone will continuously draw that power. Apple says delivered power varies with the iPhone model, adapter wattage, and system conditions.

Selected newer iPhones listed by Apple Part numbers A3502, A3503, A2580, or A3250 30W or higher, providing at least 15V/2.0A Up to 25W
iPhone 17e, iPhone 15, and earlier models Part A2140 20W or higher, meeting Apple’s stated 9V output requirement Up to 15W
iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 12 mini MagSafe Charger with a sufficient adapter, as specified by Apple Sufficient adapter; see Apple’s model and adapter guidance Up to 12W

Apple’s full compatibility and output conditions are on its MagSafe Charger support page. The wattage printed on an adapter alone is not enough to confirm the required setup: check that its USB-C output profile meets the voltage and current requirement as well.

What to check before buying

  • Confirm the exact iPhone model and whether it supports magnetic attachment.
  • Check the MagSafe Charger part number or the exact third-party charger model; similar-looking chargers may have different supported rates.
  • Confirm the adapter is USB-C and meets the relevant wattage and output-profile requirement. Apple sells the MagSafe Charger without a power adapter, so include the adapter if you do not already have a suitable one.
  • Choose based on the combination you will actually use, not the highest number printed on a charger’s packaging.

Decide between Apple MagSafe and a Qi2 magnetic charger

Qi2 is a standards-based alternative that adds magnetic alignment; the Wireless Power Consortium describes 15W charging for Qi2-certified devices. Certification testing is conducted at authorized independent laboratories for safety and interoperability. This does not establish that every Qi2 charger will deliver the same rate as Apple’s MagSafe Charger on every iPhone.

Apple MagSafe Charger (1 m): Wireless Charger with Fast-Charging Capability
  • The MagSafe Charger makes wireless charging a snap. The perfectly aligned magnets attach to compatible iPhone models. The MagSafe Charger provides faster wireless charging up to 25W when paired with a 30W power adapter.
  • The MagSafe Charger is certified for Qi2.2 and Qi charging, so it can be used to wirelessly charge your iPhone 8 or later, as well as AirPods models with a wireless charging case.
  • Available in two cable lengths: 1 meter and 2 meter.

Before buying a third-party model, search for that exact product in the Wireless Power Consortium product database or its broader Qi standard overview. Check the product’s certification and stated profile, then confirm the rate supported by your iPhone. The WPC database entry for Apple’s MagSafe Charger identifies a 15.0W Magnetic Power Profile; that certification record is distinct from Apple’s later model-specific peak claims for newer MagSafe Charger hardware.

If you want Apple’s listed peak for a particular iPhone, use Apple’s exact charger-and-adapter requirements. If you are considering Qi2, verify the precise charger model and certification rather than assuming the Qi2 label alone guarantees a particular iPhone charging rate.

Set up the charger correctly and manage heat

  1. Connect the MagSafe Charger to its suitable power adapter and plug it in before placing the iPhone on the charger. Apple says this sequence allows maximum power delivery.
  2. Place the charger on a flat surface clear of metal objects and foreign material, then align the iPhone on it.
  3. If you put the iPhone on the charger before connecting the charger to power, remove the phone, connect power, wait three seconds, and place the phone back on the charger.
  4. Keep credit cards, security badges, passports, and key fobs away from the space between the phone and charger; magnets may damage magnetic strips or RFID chips.

The phone or charger may become warm during wireless charging. Apple says software may limit charging above 80 percent if the battery gets too warm. If the iPhone is connected to wired power and MagSafe at the same time, Apple says it charges through the connector.
