To choose travel insurance for delays and cancellations, compare the policy’s covered reasons, delay trigger, eligible expenses, limits, exclusions, and claim requirements against your itinerary and prepaid costs. A policy label alone is not a guarantee: coverage depends on the specific wording, and there is no universal number of delay hours that makes every policy pay.
Understand the three benefits before comparing policies
Trip cancellation, trip interruption, and travel delay address different problems. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) explains that cancellation coverage may reimburse prepaid trip costs when a covered reason prevents you from traveling; the specific reasons and limits are set by the policy. - Trip cancellation: A covered event prevents you from starting the trip. Reimbursement is subject to the policy’s covered-reason list, exclusions, limits, and treatment of refunds.
- Trip interruption: A covered event cuts short a trip after it begins. Check what unused prepaid costs and additional transport home, if any, the policy covers.
- Travel delay: A qualifying delay may make specified additional costs or other losses eligible for benefits. It does not necessarily reimburse every expense caused by a late flight.
Definitions and benefits vary by insurer and plan. Read the certificate or policy wording, not just the summary or product name.
Check the delay trigger and what the benefit pays
There is no industry-wide delay threshold. Allianz says the qualifying duration varies by plan, and its benefit explanation describes limits and eligible expenses as policy-specific. Allianz travel-delay benefit explanation

For each plan, verify the following details together:
- Trigger: How many hours must pass? Must the delay be consecutive? Which causes qualify?
- Disrupted travel: Does the wording address a missed connection, or a missed cruise or tour departure? Do not assume that a general delay benefit covers these situations.
- Eligible costs: Check whether the policy names lodging, meals, local transport, onward travel, unused prepaid costs, or other expenses. A listed benefit may still have conditions.
- Limits: Compare the per-person or per-trip maximum with any daily sublimit. Check whether the benefit is reimbursement of documented expenses, a fixed payment, or both.
- Evidence: Find out whether you need receipts, written proof of the delay and its cause, or other records from the carrier.
One Allianz plan’s terms, for example, list a six-hour delay and plan-specific dollar caps. That is an illustration of one plan, not a standard threshold for travel insurance generally. Allianz plan terms

Read cancellation and interruption terms by cause
Cancellation and interruption benefits apply only when the reason for the change is covered under the specific policy. Compare the covered-reason list with the risks that matter for your trip, then read the exclusions and conditions that narrow or qualify that list. The NAIC emphasizes that each policy sets its own limits and identifies situations it will or will not cover. NAIC consumer guidance

Pay particular attention to provisions concerning known events, pre-existing conditions, supplier insolvency or default, work obligations, planned activities, and any eligibility requirements or deadlines for a waiver. Confirm how the plan calculates reimbursement, whether the insured trip cost has a maximum, what happens when a supplier offers a refund, and whether interruption coverage addresses transport home.

When Cancel For Any Reason may matter
Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) is not the same as standard cancellation coverage. The NAIC says CFAR is usually an add-on, generally costs more, commonly reimburses only a portion of eligible costs, and may require purchase within a specified window, insuring the full trip cost, and cancellation by a stated deadline. Availability and exact conditions vary, so compare the actual endorsement rather than relying on the name. NAIC travel-insurance overview
Compare policies against your trip
Use the same itinerary and traveler details when requesting quotes. A useful comparison is not just the premium: it is whether the terms address your likely losses and whether you can meet the policy’s conditions.
| What to compare | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Delay benefit | What duration and causes trigger it? Which expenses qualify? What are the per-day and total caps, and what proof is required? |
| Cancellation and interruption | Which causes are covered? What is the maximum insured trip cost? How are refunds and unused prepaid costs treated? Is additional transport covered? |
| Exclusions and add-ons | How does the policy address known events, pre-existing conditions, supplier default, work obligations, activities, waivers, and CFAR deadlines? |
| Trip and traveler eligibility | Are all travelers, dates, destinations, and planned activities eligible? Does the plan fit the trip length and traveler profile? |
| Existing protection and service | What benefits already come from a credit card or another policy? Is assistance available when needed, and what is the claims process? |
| Price and purchase terms | What is the actual premium for this itinerary, and what are the plan’s cancellation or refund terms? |
The NAIC says travel insurance usually costs 5% to 10% of the total trip price, but actual prices vary with factors such as season, origin, destination, age, and coverage. Treat that as a broad U.S. industry indication, not a quote for your trip. NAIC travel-insurance overview
Check airline rights separately from insurance
An insurance claim is not the only possible route to a remedy. Depending on the route and applicable rules, an airline or other carrier may owe a refund, rerouting, assistance, or compensation independently of insurance. Check the carrier’s terms and the passenger-rights rules that apply to your journey, and ask how a refund or payment affects the loss you can claim under the policy.
European Union passenger-rights rules are route- and law-specific; they should not be treated as worldwide rules. The European Commission provides an overview and a separate Q&A on the applicable framework. European Commission passenger rights; European Commission passenger-rights Q&A
Confirm the plan fits the traveler and destination
Before buying, confirm that the policy covers the countries you will visit, the full trip dates, every traveler, and the activities you plan to do. Check relevant medical needs, emergency transport, and access to assistance as well as delay and cancellation benefits. The U.S. Department of State advises travelers going abroad to consider destination validity, trip length, medical care, transportation, activities, and a 24-hour help line. This is U.S. government guidance for travel abroad, not a substitute for local rules or the policy itself. U.S. Department of State insurance guidance
Check for overlapping benefits from a credit card or another insurer, but confirm the exact terms rather than assuming overlap makes a policy unnecessary. Save the policy documents and note any purchase deadlines that affect a waiver or add-on.
Ask these questions before you pay
- Which exact cancellation and interruption reasons qualify, and which common causes are excluded?
- How many hours of delay trigger a benefit, must those hours be consecutive, and which causes count?
- Which costs can I claim, what are the per-day and total limits, and are benefits paid by reimbursement or another method?
- What proof must I obtain from the carrier, and which receipts or booking records should I keep?
- How do refunds or assistance from an airline, tour operator, credit card, or another insurer affect a claim?
- Are every traveler, destination, date, and planned activity covered, and are there conditions or waiver deadlines?
- Is a 24-hour assistance line available, and should I contact it before arranging alternate lodging or transport?
- What is the price for this specific trip, and what are the plan’s cancellation or refund terms?
Use the policy wording and certificate as the final authority. Keep booking confirmations, receipts, and carrier notices documenting a delay or cancellation; these records can help establish what happened and what you paid.
