How to Prepare for a Multi-Day Walk Across England

Prepare for a multi-day walk by choosing a route that fits your time and experience, breaking it into realistic stages, arranging overnight stays, and carrying the right navigation and safety essentials. Check current trail information, weather and—on coastal routes—tides before setting out. The steps below apply to England and Wales; the route examples are in England.

Choose a route for the walking you want to do

Distance alone is a poor guide to difficulty. Compare routes by available days, terrain and ascent, exposure, remoteness, resupply, accommodation and transport. Check whether a route has shorter or lower-level alternatives, and look at the specific sections you plan to walk rather than assuming an entire trail has one consistent character.

Defra’s collection lists 17 National Trails in England and Wales. Official trail pages provide section information and maps, and England trail information includes accessibility details. Check the route and section directly for suitability.

Trail Official length and indicative schedule Terrain and planning considerations
Pennine Way 268 miles (431 km); approximately 16 to 19 days, according to Defra’s trail guidance published 24 June 2026. Hilly and sometimes very remote, with narrow, uneven, wet or boggy ground. Some sections have no amenities. Defra describes the 20-mile (32 km) Dufton-to-Alston stage as the most challenging, with high ascent and exposed sections.
Coast to Coast Path 190 miles (306 km); approximately 13 days with a rest day, according to Defra’s trail guidance published 24 June 2026. Includes coast, mountain and moorland, with demanding, hilly, steep and remote sections. Easier agricultural-land sections and lower-level options are available; Defra identifies a gentler low-level choice between Keld and Reeth.

These figures are route examples, not a recommended pace for everyone. Build daily stages around terrain, water and food access, overnight stops and possible exit points; the official examples do not establish a universal safe daily mileage.

Plan stages, overnight stays and transport

Once you have chosen a trail, use its current route information to map each day. Check for diversions, closures, seasonal changes and route options, then follow local signs. Older maps or guidebooks may not show the latest route. Official National Trail maps and downloadable GPX data are available; keep a map, guidebook or directions that work without a live internet connection.

Plan where you will sleep and how you will reach the start and finish of each stage. Accommodation near trails can fill, particularly in spring and summer and on bank holidays, so book ahead where possible. If camping, use an official campsite: wild camping near trails is not usually allowed without the landowner’s permission.

Pack for the route, not for every possibility

Keep your pack as light as you reasonably can while carrying what you need for the day and its conditions. Official guidance recommends good-fitting walking footwear, waterproofs, warm layers, food and snacks, and plenty of water, especially in hot weather. Fit and terrain matter; there is no single boot type suited to every walker.

  • Footwear and clothing: Choose comfortable footwear appropriate to the surface and conditions. Bring waterproofs and warm layers; in hot weather, consider lightweight layers, a hat and suncream.
  • Food and water: Carry enough for the day even if shops or cafés appear on the route. Remote sections may have limited water. If you take water from streams, use purification equipment.
  • Navigation: Carry a current map, guidebook or offline directions. On routes where navigation may be difficult, take a compass and know how to use it.
  • Emergency and power items: For a long journey or remote area, consider a whistle, torch, first-aid kit, survival bag and spare rations. Fully charge your phone and other essential devices; a power bank may help on a longer journey.

Match emergency kit to the route and conditions rather than treating the list as a substitute for planning. Expect patchy mobile signal or no coverage in some places.

Check conditions and make a safety plan

Check the weather before leaving. Conditions can change quickly on mountains and along the coast; be prepared to change your plan or turn back if they worsen. For coastal walks and tidal rivers, check tide times so you do not get cut off. Coastal hazards include storms, cliff edges, slippery or unstable rocks, mud and quicksand. Follow local warnings and HM Coastguard advice.

If you are walking alone, tell someone where you plan to go and when you expect to return. Update them if your plans change. In an emergency, call 999; at the coast ask for the coastguard. In a remote place, ask for police and then mountain rescue or lowland search and rescue.

Follow access rules and local signs

Natural England and Natural Resources Wales advise: “You should always follow local signs on the trail.” Their National Trails: prepare for your visit guidance was published 24 June 2026. Also check the Countryside Code, updated 26 May 2023, for advice on routes and local conditions.

  • Stay on marked paths unless wider access is available, and use up-to-date maps or websites alongside on-the-ground signs.
  • Leave gates and property as you found them. Respect workers, other path users, livestock and wildlife.
  • On rural roads without a pavement, face oncoming traffic and follow the Highway Code.
