How to Prepare and Loop Videos for an Always-On YouTube Stream on a Raspberry Pi

Use FFmpeg’s input loop and pacing options to send a prepared video repeatedly from a Raspberry Pi to YouTube Live. This guide covers encoder settings, setup, testing and long-stream limits.

To loop a prerecorded video into YouTube Live from a Raspberry Pi, prepare a file the Pi can handle, use FFmpeg to pace and repeat it, and send the output to the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The Pi must remain powered, connected, and able to sustain the workload; looping a file does not make a stream independent of the device or guarantee that YouTube will keep one broadcast open indefinitely.

How do I prepare and loop videos for an always-on YouTube stream on a Raspberry Pi? Check the media and usage rights, choose a stream profile, then test the exact FFmpeg command and connection before leaving the Pi unattended.

Prepare the video and audio

Check the source file

Use a recording that plays correctly from beginning to end, with the intended picture and sound. Confirm its resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, and duration before setting up the stream. Choose media the intended Raspberry Pi can process; the official Raspberry Pi material cited here does not set a minimum model or establish FFmpeg file-loop performance by model.

If the source already matches the stream you want to send, avoid adding a real-time conversion step without a reason. Re-encoding adds processing work, and the available official guidance does not establish which Pi models can sustain particular FFmpeg conversions. If you do need to convert, test the converted file and the live command on the target board.

Confirm you may stream it

Use video and audio you have permission to transmit. A file playing locally or being available online does not by itself establish permission to broadcast it. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance is not a guide to licensing, so resolve rights for the specific material before going live.

Choose a YouTube output profile

YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, constant bitrate encoding, and AAC or MP3 audio. For a straightforward SDR H.264 setup, YouTube recommends the following video bitrates; treat them as starting points, not proof that your Pi or internet connection can sustain them.

Profile YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate When to consider it
720p30 8 Mbps Choose when lower upload demand matters more than the extra detail of 1080p.
1080p30 14 Mbps Choose when you want more detail and the Pi and upload connection can sustain the workload.

These are YouTube Help recommendations, current guidance accessed in 2026, not Raspberry Pi performance measurements. YouTube also recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its advanced audio recommendations include 128 Kbps stereo at a 44.1 kHz sample rate. Check YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the profile you use.

Choose a bitrate your internet connection can maintain continuously, then verify it with a representative stream. A speed test alone cannot establish that the full setup will remain healthy: test the actual video, audio, encoder and network together.

Set up FFmpeg to loop and pace the file

FFmpeg provides two input options central to this workflow. Put input-specific options before the corresponding input file argument:

  • -stream_loop -1 tells FFmpeg to loop the input indefinitely.
  • -re reads a file at its native frame rate, a useful way to pace file input for live output.

For example, the input portion has this shape:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "VIDEO_FILE" ...

VIDEO_FILE is a placeholder for the local media path. The remaining command depends on the file’s codecs, whether you can stream-copy or must encode, the FFmpeg build, output muxing and YouTube ingest destination. There is no universal remainder that is safe to copy for every file and Pi. Use the FFmpeg documentation to check the options supported by your installed build and construct the output for your media.

If you configure an RTMP or RTMPS output, use the server URL and stream key supplied by YouTube rather than a URL or key copied from someone else’s setup. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel.

Connect the Pi to YouTube Live

  1. Open YouTube Studio and create or select a stream. Go to Live Control Room and use its stream setup to obtain the server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe this workflow.
  2. Configure FFmpeg’s output. Enter the server URL and private key in the output configuration for your chosen protocol and encoding. Do not expose the key in a public tutorial, screenshot, or shared command.
  3. Start the FFmpeg process on the Pi. Check its output for errors and allow YouTube to receive the encoder feed.
  4. Wait for the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that the picture and sound are correct. For a scheduled stream, use the room’s Go Live control after the preview appears.

Sending an encoder feed and starting a YouTube broadcast are related but distinct steps. Follow the Live Control Room status and controls rather than assuming that launching FFmpeg alone completes every part of the broadcast workflow.

Test before leaving it unattended

YouTube recommends a representative test before a live stream and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. In the test, include motion and audio, and check the whole loop rather than only the opening seconds.

Raspberry Pi model and encoding considerations

Raspberry Pi’s rpicam-vid documentation says that utility uses hardware H.264 encoding when available, while Raspberry Pi 5 uses software video encoders. Raspberry Pi describes a --low-latency option for rpicam-vid that outputs frames more quickly, with slightly reduced coding efficiency and possibly a slightly lower maximum frame rate; the same documentation says Pi 5 can still easily achieve 1080p30.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That note is platform context, not a benchmark for looping prerecorded files with FFmpeg: rpicam-vid is a camera capture utility. Test the exact media, resolution, frame rate, audio and FFmpeg output on your intended board, especially if the setup re-encodes video.

Plan around YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited setup guidance does not establish what happens to broadcasts longer than 12 hours, so do not assume that one YouTube broadcast can stay open forever or that its archive behavior will be the same. Continuous encoder transmission from the Pi and YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle are separate concerns. If a stream must remain available over a longer period, plan and test an appropriate broadcast workflow rather than relying on an unqualified “runs forever” promise.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
YouTube does not show an incoming preview. Server URL, stream key, output configuration or encoder connection. Recheck the values in Live Control Room, confirm the key is current and private, and inspect FFmpeg’s error output.
Video or audio is choppy, or the stream falls behind. Pi processing load, bitrate, source profile or upload stability. Test the actual file and command; reduce the output demand or avoid unnecessary re-encoding if the source already matches the intended output.
Picture or sound is missing or incorrect. Source file, codec handling, or output mapping. Play the file through to the end locally and check that the FFmpeg output is configured for its actual video and audio streams.
The stream looks healthy initially but fails during a longer run. Long-duration device, network or broadcast behavior. Run a representative extended test and monitor both FFmpeg and Live Control Room. Do not infer YouTube’s behavior beyond the under-12-hour automatic-archive statement.
The stream fails at the loop point. Source-file boundary or media compatibility. Inspect the start and end of the file, then test repeated playback with the same FFmpeg setup before going live.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is an always-on prerecorded YouTube channel but you do not want a Pi and home connection running continuously, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
