Before installing a major Android or ColorOS update on an OPPO phone, check that the update is available for your exact model, back up important data somewhere recoverable, and prepare power, network, and storage. OPPO says updates usually do not erase personal data, but still recommends making a backup first.
1. Check your OPPO model and update availability
Open Settings and find About phone or About device. Note the model and installed ColorOS version, then look for the update screen on the phone. OPPO’s menu paths vary by ColorOS version: on ColorOS 12 and above, one route is Settings > About device and tapping the update card; other OPPO guidance lists Settings > About device > ColorOS for ColorOS 13 and above, Settings > About device for ColorOS 12, and Settings > Software Update or System Update on older versions. Follow the labels shown on your phone because paths and screens can differ.

If no update appears, it may not have reached your device yet. OPPO says availability can depend on staged rollout, model eligibility, regional approval, carrier-customized software, and available storage. Check OPPO’s local support or update information for your model and region, then check the phone again later.
2. Back up data to a place you can recover from
Choose a backup method based on what you need to preserve and where you want the copy stored. OPPO documents local backup, Google backup, and copying files to a computer. Supported app data and restore behavior can vary, so check the recovery requirements for apps or files that matter most.

Local backup paths
For ColorOS 15 and above, OPPO lists Settings > System & update > Back up & reset > Back up & migrate > Local backup > New backup. For ColorOS 5.0–14, its listed path is Settings > Additional settings or System settings > Back up and reset > Back up & restore > Local backup > New backup. Select the data and start the backup.
Google backup paths
For ColorOS 15 and above, OPPO lists Settings > System & update > Back up & reset > Google accounts > Back up now. For ColorOS 5.0–14, OPPO lists Settings > Additional settings > Back up and reset, then enabling Google backup. Menu labels may differ on your phone.

Copy files to a computer
Connect the phone to a computer with a compatible USB cable, choose File Transfer if prompted, and copy the folders you need. OPPO’s computer guidance names the Backup folder and folders such as DCIM, Movies, and Music. Open the copied files on the computer to confirm the copy exists before relying on it.

3. Prepare power, network, and storage
- Power: Plug the phone into power or keep the battery above 40%, as OPPO advises.
- Network: Use a reliable connection. OPPO recommends Wi-Fi for downloading firmware to avoid using mobile data.
- Storage: Leave enough free space for the package and installation. OPPO does not establish a universal free-space figure; check the update screen or instructions for your model rather than guessing.
4. Install the update without interrupting it
When the update is offered, follow the on-screen prompts in the phone’s official update screen. Menu names differ by ColorOS version, and OPPO says the device will indicate if it is already on the latest available version. During installation, follow OPPO support’s instruction: “Do not operate or power off your device during the process.”

A missing OTA update can reflect rollout timing or eligibility rather than a fault. Confirm your model and region against OPPO’s local update information, ensure sufficient storage, and check again later if the rollout is staged.

If the phone is eligible but the OTA process fails, OPPO documents a PC System Upgrade Tool for ColorOS 11 and above. Its guidance calls for sufficient battery and storage, a prior backup, USB debugging, and not turning off the phone during the process. Tool availability and exact instructions can vary by model and region, so use the local OPPO support site for the applicable steps. If those steps do not resolve the issue, contact OPPO support or a service center rather than installing unofficial firmware.
