How to Prepare an App for Apple Review: Lessons from the Guidelines

Apple’s App Review Guidelines reach beyond the final upload. Here’s how to prepare your app, account for third-party services and avoid treating a checklist as an approval guarantee.

Apple’s App Store Review Guidelines are best treated as product requirements, not a checklist to open on upload day. They cover the app’s full experience—including third-party SDKs, privacy practices, user safety, technical behavior, business models and the information reviewers need to assess it. Reading them can help you catch avoidable problems, but Apple explicitly says its checklist does not replace the guidelines or guarantee approval.

What the guidelines are designed to do

Apple describes the App Store as a curated place intended to offer users a safe experience and developers an opportunity to succeed. Its review process evaluates submissions, while scanning for malware and software that could affect safety, security or privacy. That makes the guidelines more than a list of upload requirements: they set expectations for the app people use and the practices behind it.

They are also a living document. Apple says new apps can raise new questions that lead to new rules, so use the current App Review Guidelines rather than relying on an old summary.

What I learned: review readiness starts with the whole product

Your third-party tools are part of your responsibility

Apple makes developers responsible for compliance across the app, including ad networks, analytics services and third-party SDKs. A review of only your own code or screens is not enough: consider what data those services collect, how they behave and whether their use fits your disclosures and the guidelines. Apple’s wording is direct: “You are responsible for making sure everything in your app complies with these guidelines, including ad networks, analytics services and third-party SDKs, so review and choose them carefully.”

Privacy and safety need working controls

Privacy is operational, not merely a policy link. Check that your disclosures reflect actual data practices and that consent and other privacy requirements are handled in the app as applicable. For apps with user-generated content, Apple calls for safeguards such as filtering objectionable material, ways to report it, timely responses to reports, blocking abusive users and published contact information. Apple says certain apps built primarily around random or anonymous chat do not belong on the App Store.

Apps in the Kids Category face additional restrictions, including limits related to links, purchases and distractions outside a parental-gated area, as well as privacy-related constraints. If your app is aimed at children, assess those requirements as a distinct design and compliance concern.

Function, presentation and business rules meet in the review

An app should work as advertised, provide meaningful functionality and avoid misleading presentation or impersonation. Apple also expects developers to test for crashes and bugs and use public APIs. For apps that sell digital goods or services, review the in-app purchase and subscription provisions that apply to your product; payment rules can depend on storefront, geography and program terms, so do not assume one rule covers every market.

How to prepare an app for App Review

Apple’s “Before You Submit” checklist turns review readiness into practical work. Use it before sending a build, and make each item specific to the app’s actual features and dependencies.

  1. Test the build. Exercise core flows and hardware-dependent behavior, and look for crashes and bugs. If a feature depends on a device capability, validate it on relevant hardware; Apple also notes that developers can use Xcode to install an app on a device.
  2. Make the listing accurate and complete. Ensure metadata describes what the app really does and does not imply features or capabilities it lacks.
  3. Keep contact information current. Reviewers need a reliable way to reach the developer if they encounter an issue or need clarification.
  4. Provide access and resources. Supply credentials, hardware or other resources needed to assess the app. Do not make essential review flows inaccessible behind an unexplained account, unavailable device or missing setup step.
  5. Keep backend services available. The app should be reviewable while Apple evaluates it; a build that depends on unavailable servers or test data can prevent assessment.
  6. Explain what is not obvious. Use review notes to describe non-obvious features, special setup steps and purchases that a reviewer may not readily discover. Notes help explain the app; they do not substitute for compliant behavior.

What Apple’s review figures do—and do not—tell you

In its 2026 report, Apple said it evaluated more than 9.1 million app submissions in 2025. It reported rejecting more than 2 million for failing to adhere to the App Review Guidelines, including more than 443,000 for privacy violations and more than 22,000 for hidden or undocumented features. These are Apple’s own reported totals, not an independent audit. They show that privacy and undisclosed behavior are material enforcement areas, but they do not establish an individual app’s chance of approval or a rejection rate.

How current are the rules?

Apple’s developer announcement dated June 8, 2026 said the Apple Developer Program License Agreement and App Review Guidelines were revised to support features, update policies and provide clarification. The announcement also enumerated changes to the agreement, including requirements concerning developer identity and the use of named frameworks and APIs. It does not say that every guideline changed on that date; check the live guideline text and the relevant agreement terms for the provision that applies to your app.

Geography matters especially for distribution and payments. Apple’s current materials include regional terms and addenda; EU alternative distribution and payment options require an addendum. The applicable rules can depend on storefront, eligibility and program terms, so consult the terms for the market and route you intend to use rather than generalizing from another region.

What reading the guidelines cannot promise

A prepared build and a careful checklist can reduce preventable friction, but they cannot predict a particular decision. Apple itself cautions: “This doesn’t replace the guidelines or guarantee approval, but making sure you can tick every item on the list is a good start.” Review the complete current rules against your app’s actual behavior, not only its category or marketing description.
