Assemble records and projections around those questions, then confirm the lender’s own checklist before submitting. SBA guidance is a useful preparation baseline—not a universal set of required forms.
Start with a clear funding and repayment story
Write down the requested amount, when you need the funds, and each intended use. For every item, explain how it supports operations or growth and how the resulting business cash flow relates to repayment. SBA recommends stating the funding requirement and intended uses in the business plan (SBA business-plan guidance).

A concise request might identify a specific equipment purchase, a seasonal inventory build, or working capital, with the expected timing and the business reason. Avoid presenting a lump sum without showing what it covers. The lender needs to understand both the purpose and the repayment source.
Assemble the application materials
Requirements depend on the lender, loan size, loan type, and—in SBA 7(a) lending—the processing method. Treat the following as a preparation checklist, not a guarantee that every lender will request every item.
#1 Best Overall
Business overview and plan
Describe what the business sells, who its customers are, how it operates, and the market it serves. Include relevant management or industry experience. SBA’s Lender Match checklist flags a business plan, particularly for startup financing, and notes that industry experience can help but is not required (SBA Lender Match).
Historical financial records
For an established business, SBA advises including income statements, balance sheets, and cash-flow statements for the last three to five years when available. A lender may also ask for business and personal tax returns, financial statements, credit reports, and legal or ownership records. Those are examples of commonly requested documents, not universal requirements; Chase’s business-loan checklist offers examples of what a bank may request (Chase for Business checklist).
Forecasts, assumptions, and capital expenditures
Prepare projected financial statements and a capital-expenditure budget tied to the loan request. SBA recommends a five-year prospective outlook, with more detailed monthly or quarterly projections for year one. Explain the assumptions behind sales, collection timing, costs, hiring, and major purchases rather than presenting unexplained totals (SBA business-plan guidance).

Credit and collateral context
Be prepared to discuss credit history and assets that could be considered as collateral. SBA notes that many lenders require collateral, but each lender makes its own assessment; the exact requirements vary (SBA Lender Match).
Get the actual lender checklist
Before submitting, ask the lender which application forms and supporting records it needs for your circumstances. SBA says 7(a) application contents vary with loan size and processing method, and the lender determines the documents required. As SBA puts it, “You will always work directly with your lender and not with SBA” (SBA 7(a) loans).
Build a cash-flow forecast that shows timing
A cash-flow forecast tracks when money is expected to enter and leave the business. It answers a different question from an income statement: a business can report accounting profit and still run short of cash if customer payments arrive after bills are due. The FDIC/SBA Money Smart guide explains that accrual-basis profit and loss can mask cash shortages and that projections help plan expenses, break-even points, large purchases, seasonal inventory, and financing needs (FDIC/SBA Financial Management for a Small Business Participant Guide).

Use a rolling period-by-period schedule
For each month or quarter, show opening cash, expected receipts, cash paid out, and ending cash. Carry each period’s ending balance forward as the next period’s opening cash. SBA recommends monthly or quarterly detail for year one; monthly intervals can make near-term timing gaps easier to spot.

The FDIC/SBA sample projection includes cash sales, accounts-receivable collections, interest income, loan proceeds, and equity contributions. On the outflow side, account for operating costs, payroll, taxes, debt payments, planned equipment or inventory purchases, and owner draws where relevant. Enter loan proceeds only in the period you expect to receive them (FDIC/SBA guide).
Make assumptions traceable
Label significant assumptions and connect major lines to records or a brief explanation. For example, support customer-collection timing with receivables history, payroll with staffing plans, and a major purchase with a quote or budget. Make the forecast internally consistent: if the loan funds an inventory purchase, show both the proceeds and the purchase in the expected periods, then reflect the sales and collection timing that inventory is intended to support.

Review and revise the forecast
Compare actual cash results with the forecast regularly. Update assumptions when sales, collections, costs, or the funding date change. The forecast is a planning tool, not a promise of lender approval.

Ask each lender about interest rates, fees, minimum credit score, cash-flow requirements, and other qualifying factors. Also ask about payment timing, whether the rate is fixed or variable, collateral, prepayment penalties, grace periods, covenants or other conditions, and circumstances in which the lender can demand full repayment. Compare the complete terms against your forecast rather than choosing by loan amount alone (SBA Lender Match).
SBA’s Lender Match can identify interested lenders, but it is not a loan application and does not guarantee a match or offer. Applicants apply directly to lenders for 7(a) loans, and the lender supplies the application and documentation requirements (SBA Lender Match; SBA 7(a) loans).

Submit a coherent, lender-specific package
Before sending the application, check that the funding request, use-of-funds schedule, historical records, forecast, and repayment explanation agree with one another. Ensure the forecast reflects realistic cash timing and the proposed debt payments. Then use the lender’s own checklist to confirm its forms and supporting records; SBA guidance does not replace that step.
