Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallBefore upgrading, identify your current Apple TV model and decide which specific improvement you need. Then check whether your TV, HDMI cable, and any receiver or sound bar can deliver the picture and sound features you want. The Apple specifications cited here cover the Apple TV 4K (3rd generation), introduced in 2022; they do not establish which model is the newest or currently sold in 2026, so verify Apple’s current lineup before purchasing.
1. Identify your current Apple TV and the model you are considering
Start with the model name or generation of your existing device, then compare its capabilities with the upgrade you have in mind. A newer device is useful only if it adds something you will use or resolves a limitation in your current setup.

Apple’s specifications for Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) list an A15 Bionic chip, HDMI 2.1, and Wi-Fi 6. The Wi-Fi + Ethernet configuration also includes Thread networking. The cited specs describe this model as introduced in 2022; they are not confirmation of current retail availability or the latest generation. Apple’s specifications are a reference for this specific generation, not a substitute for checking the current lineup.

- Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound
- A10X Fusion chip for ultra-fast graphics and performance
- Voice search by asking the Siri Remote
2. Match the upgrade to your TV’s picture formats
“4K” alone does not tell you which HDR formats your television can display. Check its manual or specifications for 4K resolution and the HDR formats you care about: HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, or HLG. Apple lists the third-generation Apple TV 4K as supporting Dolby Vision and HDR10+/HDR10/HLG up to 2160p at 60 frames per second, but the TV determines which formats you can actually view. Apple states that HDR10+ is supported only on Apple TV 4K (3rd generation). Apple’s format guidance explains the relevant TV requirements.
Automatic HDR10, HDR10+, or Dolby Vision selection requires a TV that supports the relevant format at 60 Hz (50 Hz in Europe). Apple says the format can also be displayed at 30 Hz (25 Hz in Europe) with Match Dynamic Range enabled. Check your TV’s own documentation for its supported formats and refresh rates rather than assuming that a 4K label guarantees them.
3. Check every connection between Apple TV and the screen
The picture path includes more than the Apple TV and television. A TV input, its settings, the HDMI cable, a receiver or sound bar, and any switch or splitter can affect 4K or HDR. Some televisions provide 4K/HDR only on particular HDMI inputs or require an input setting named something like Enhanced, Deep, or Ultra; names differ by manufacturer.

Apple lists HDMI 2.1 on the third-generation model and describes support for up to 4K 60-fps HDR output, ARC or eARC, and QMS, subject to compatible equipment and content-protection requirements. HDMI version labels alone do not establish that every device and connection in your setup supports a particular feature. Check the manuals for the exact TV port and receiver capabilities you plan to use.
For a 4K HDR television, Apple’s setup guidance calls for a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, sold separately. Apple also recommends a cable marked Compatible Dolby Vision for 4K HDR. If your existing cable passes the connection check and delivers the formats you need, this is not a reason by itself to replace it. Apple’s HDMI and HDR guidance covers these compatibility checks.
4. Choose Wi-Fi or Ethernet based on your setup
The third-generation Apple TV 4K is listed in two configurations:

| Configuration | Storage | Network features listed by Apple |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi | 64GB | Wi-Fi 6; Ethernet is not available on this configuration. |
| Wi-Fi + Ethernet | 128GB | Wi-Fi 6, Gigabit Ethernet, and Thread. |
Choose the Wi-Fi + Ethernet configuration if you need a wired network connection or want its listed Thread support for your connected-home setup. If Wi-Fi suits your installation and you do not need those features, compare the Wi-Fi configuration instead. Apple’s specifications do not quantify a real-world performance difference between these options. Check Apple’s configuration specifications and confirm current model options before buying.
5. Make sure setup requirements are covered
Apple’s setup guide requires an Apple Account, internet access, and an HDMI connection. A nearby iPhone or iPad can make setup faster. For a 4K HDR TV, the guide also specifies a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Apple’s setup instructions walk through connecting and configuring Apple TV 4K.
The cited setup guidance does not document a process for migrating apps or settings from one Apple TV to another. Do not assume those items will transfer automatically; consult the current on-screen setup options and Apple’s current support instructions for your model.

6. Troubleshoot the existing setup before replacing equipment
If your current Apple TV has picture or sound problems, first isolate the cause. Apple’s recommended checks are:
- Update tvOS.
- If needed, reset the video settings.
- On Apple TV, open Settings > Video and Audio > Check HDMI Connection and follow the test.
- Connect Apple TV directly to the television to see whether a receiver or sound bar is affecting the signal.
- If the direct connection works, check the receiver or sound bar’s capabilities, firmware, enhanced HDMI settings, and each cable in the chain.
- Temporarily remove any HDMI switch or splitter to test whether it is part of the problem.
These steps can identify a compatibility or configuration issue; they do not mean every older setup needs replacement equipment. See Apple’s troubleshooting guidance for further detail.
