Before installing a major One UI update, back up important data, charge your Galaxy phone, connect to stable Wi-Fi where possible, and check for the update in Settings. Once installation starts, leave the phone connected and undisturbed until it finishes. The exact menus and prompts can vary by model and software version.
1. Back up the data you cannot afford to lose
Make a backup before updating, even when you expect the installation to go smoothly. Samsung Smart Switch can back up selected content to a computer or compatible external storage, including a USB drive or SD card. The available options depend on the phone and its compatibility.

Smart Switch does not necessarily copy everything. Samsung notes that coverage varies by device and operating system; third-party messenger data and DRM-protected content may not transfer. Check the backup settings of any messaging, authentication, or other app whose data matters to you, and confirm that its backup is current before proceeding.
Choose a backup destination
- Computer: Use Smart Switch on a computer for a backup stored separately from the phone.
- USB or SD storage: A Galaxy phone may support Smart Switch backup to a USB flash drive, SSD, or SD card. A USB-C flash drive or OTG adapter may be needed, depending on the phone and drive.
- Verify the result: Review which content types were selected and whether the backup completed. Do not assume that app-specific data or every file type is included.
Samsung’s Smart Switch guidance covers backup and transfer options at Smart Switch support and its device and content compatibility information. An external drive is optional; it is not a requirement for installing One UI.

2. Charge the phone and plan to leave it alone
Start with sufficient battery and follow any charge requirement shown by your phone. Samsung Bangladesh’s update guidance, updated 2 September 2026, says to have at least 20% battery; other Samsung regional instructions use the less specific wording “sufficiently charged,” so 20% should not be treated as a universal threshold. Once the update begins, do not switch off the phone, disconnect a USB cable being used, or use the device during installation. Samsung warns that a Galaxy device may restart several times before the process is complete. Wait until it has finished and the normal screen returns.

3. Use a stable connection, preferably Wi-Fi
For a large download, use a stable Wi-Fi connection where possible. Samsung UK recommends Wi-Fi for downloading updates, and Samsung notes that some carrier conditions may require Wi-Fi for large One UI 7 updates. Follow the connection instructions displayed on your own device; conditions can differ by carrier and update.
4. Check whether the update is available
- Open Settings.
- Tap Software update, then Download and install if that option appears. Some devices may show System updates instead; menu wording varies by model and software version.
- If an update is offered, review the on-screen information and follow the prompts to download and install it.
An update may not appear for every phone at the same time. Availability can depend on model, software version, carrier requirements, and regional release waves. 5. Make room only if the phone says it needs it
There is no single free-storage figure established for every Galaxy phone and major update. If the update screen reports insufficient storage, remove or move enough content to meet the amount your device requests, then try again. Samsung’s storage troubleshooting guidance is at Samsung US storage support.
6. If the update fails or the phone will not start
Repeated download or installation problems
Check the connection and available storage, then retry using the phone’s update screen. If downloads keep failing, Samsung lists Smart Switch on a PC as another update route. See Samsung’s update troubleshooting steps.

A frozen or unresponsive phone
Samsung documents a force-reboot procedure for a Galaxy phone that is frozen or lagging. Follow the model-specific steps in Samsung US One UI 7 troubleshooting. The 5% battery threshold mentioned there applies to that documented force-reboot step; it is not the recommended charge level for installing an update.
The phone will not boot normally
If the phone still will not start normally, Samsung directs users to service support. Avoid a factory data reset unless you understand that it can erase data; Samsung cautions users to back up important information before resetting.

Before you tap Install
- Your important data has a completed backup, and you have checked separate app backups where needed.
- The phone has sufficient charge and a stable connection for the download.
- You have time to leave the phone undisturbed through installation and any restarts.
- If storage is low, you have followed the amount requested by the device rather than relying on a universal estimate.
Samsung also warns that after an update to the latest software version, a device cannot be downgraded to earlier firmware because of enhanced security policies. This warning appears in Samsung Bangladesh’s update guidance.
