Reconcile your purchase register and supporting invoices with the corresponding period’s GSTR-2B before carrying input tax credit (ITC) into GSTR-3B. GSTR-2B is a static, read-only statement generated from supplier and input service distributor filings and import information; it is not a return you file, and a match does not by itself establish that credit is legally eligible.
What to compare before claiming ITC
The GST Portal advises taxpayers to reconcile GSTR-2B with their own books and records. Use the statement as a document-level check, then assess eligibility separately under the applicable law and the facts of the transaction. The GST Portal FAQ explains the statement and its reconciliation guidance.

For the period under review, gather your purchase register and relevant purchase invoices, debit notes, credit notes, and amendments. Download GSTR-2B document details for the relevant tax period, and note the statement generation cycle. Compare each document across these practical fields:
- Supplier identity and document number and date.
- Document type, including invoice, debit note, credit note, or amendment.
- Taxable value and tax amounts.
- Place of supply, where relevant.
- Statement period and the timing of the supplier’s filing.
- Any indicated ITC availability, reversal, or reverse-charge treatment.
These checks help locate discrepancies; they are not a complete statutory test for ITC eligibility.

How to reconcile the records
- Set the period. Match the purchase-register period to the GSTR-2B tax period and generation cycle. Do not assume an invoice absent from one statement is a final omission until you check the supplier filing window.
- Match documents individually. Compare the supplier and document identifiers, type, taxable value, tax amounts, and relevant place-of-supply details against your records and supporting documents.
- Classify each difference. Record whether it is in your books but missing from GSTR-2B, in GSTR-2B but absent from your books, a value or tax mismatch, a credit-note or amendment mismatch, a duplicate, a reverse-charge item, or a document shown as unavailable.
- Resolve or hold. Check your source documents and filing-period timing. For supplier-filed errors, contact the supplier to correct the reporting. Recipients cannot edit GSTR-2B. Use the GST Portal’s invoice-management workflow where applicable, after checking the current portal instructions for the period.
- Assess eligibility independently. Determine whether the credit is claimable under the applicable CGST Act and Rules and current notifications. Keep unresolved or unsupported items pending rather than treating them as verified eligible ITC.
- Carry supported amounts into GSTR-3B. Use the appropriate sections, avoid claiming a document’s credit twice, make reversals when required, and pay tax due under reverse charge. The portal says system-populated GSTR-3B data can be edited; edited fields are highlighted and a warning is displayed. Keep a reconciliation trail for adjustments.
Why an invoice may be missing from GSTR-2B
GSTR-2B is period-sensitive. A supplier’s filing after the relevant cut-off may cause the document to appear in a later open statement rather than the period you first expected. Check the filing profile and period shown on the GST Portal before concluding that a missing invoice was not reported.
The GST Portal GSTR-2B FAQ gives these supplier-filing windows: monthly GSTR-1/1A filings are reflected for a window from 00:00 on the 12th through 23:59 on the 11th of the succeeding month; quarterly and other filer categories use a window from the 14th through the 13th. These are procedural cut-offs, not a substitute for confirming the applicable category and statement period in your account.

What a GSTR-2B match—or mismatch—does not prove
A document appearing in GSTR-2B is not blanket legal approval to claim its credit. The GST Portal notes that other provisions can make ITC unavailable beyond the particular cases identified in the statement, so the taxpayer must self-assess eligibility. Conversely, an absent or mismatched document is a reason to investigate timing, records, and supplier reporting—not proof on its own that credit is permanently unavailable.

Keep an auditable reconciliation trail
Retain the purchase-register version used, downloaded GSTR-2B details, supporting documents, discrepancy classifications, supplier follow-up, and the reasoning for any GSTR-3B adjustment, reversal, or pending item. This gives you a clear path from each amount claimed to the invoice, statement entry, and eligibility assessment behind it. The IRP explainer provides supporting context on purchase-register matching with supplier return data and the role of e-invoice data in GST reporting; it does not determine legal ITC entitlement.
