An ARN does not, by itself, mean the registration has been approved.
TRN vs ARN at a glance
| Question | TRN | ARN |
|---|---|---|
| Full form | Temporary Reference Number | Application Reference Number |
| When it appears in the normal taxpayer registration flow | During the initial steps, before the application is complete and submitted | After successful submission; where the described Aadhaar authentication applies, after that authentication is completed |
| What you use it for | Logging in again to continue a saved draft | Tracking the submitted application |
| What it does not confirm | That the application has been submitted | That registration has been approved |
This comparison follows the GST Portal’s normal taxpayer registration tutorial. ARN is also used for other GST filings, so its timing and purpose can differ outside this registration workflow.

How the references fit into a registration application
- Start the registration: Enter the initial details and verify contact information using the OTP process described by the GST Portal. The portal then displays a TRN and sends TRN acknowledgement information to the applicant’s email and mobile number.
- Resume the saved draft: On the GST Portal, go to Services > Registration > New Registration, choose the TRN option, and log in to continue the application.
- Submit the completed application: Until submission, the application is a draft. The tutorial says an unsubmitted application and its associated information are purged after 15 days. The tutorial’s publication date is not stated; the page was accessed in 2026.
- Track the submitted application: After successful submission, the portal describes the application as pending for validation and sends an acknowledgement and ARN to the registered email and mobile. In the tutorial’s applicable Aadhaar-authentication flow, the ARN is generated after the authentication exercise is complete.
How to check what happened after submission
Use Services > Registration > Track Application Status on the GST Portal. The tutorial distinguishes outcomes and processing states such as approved, rejected, pending for processing, and pending for order. Check the status itself rather than treating receipt of an ARN as an approval notice.

Which number should you use?
- You have not submitted the registration and need to continue it: use the TRN sign-in option.
- You have submitted the registration and want to follow its progress: use the ARN with the application-status tracking service.
- You want to know whether registration was granted: check the tracked application status; the ARN alone does not answer that.
Portal labels and authentication requirements can change. Follow the current GST Portal instructions when filing.
