How to Prepare 60 fps Videos for a Continuous YouTube Live Playlist

Preserve your source’s 60 fps frame rate, configure live output separately from upload settings, and test the full playlist before leaving it running.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Keep progressive 60 fps footage at its recorded frame rate, then configure the encoder’s live output separately. For a continuous YouTube Live playlist, you need a source-file playlist, an encoder or cloud service to send it to YouTube, and a tested event with the right stream settings. The key distinction: upload bitrates describe video files; live bitrates describe the outgoing feed.

1. Check and prepare each 60 fps video

YouTube’s upload guidance says, “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.” If your footage is progressive 60 fps, keep it at 60 fps rather than converting it to 30 fps without a specific reason. Check each file before adding it to the playlist:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Resolution and frame rate, including whether the video is progressive.
  • Aspect ratio and audio playback.
  • That you have the rights to stream both the video and every audio track.

YouTube’s upload guidance recommends MP4 with H.264 and progressive scan. Its high-frame-rate SDR upload reference is 12 Mbps for 1080p at 48–60 fps and 53–68 Mbps for 4K at 48–60 fps. These are upload recommendations, not settings for the live feed; YouTube notes that the upload page’s documented features are for Studio Content Manager partners, so treat them as guidance rather than a mandatory recipe for every creator. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

2. Choose how to run the continuous playlist

The playlist’s prepared files must be played into a live encoder feed. Choose a method based on whether you want local control or to avoid leaving equipment running at home.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

Local software encoder

A computer can play the prepared media into an encoder scene or feed. This offers control over clip order and transitions, but the computer and its network connection must remain available. YouTube lists OBS as open-source software available at no charge. YouTube does not promise gapless transitions for every playlist setup, so test the actual sequence before relying on it unattended.

Standalone hardware encoder

A dedicated hardware encoder can suit an advanced production, but it is not a prerequisite. YouTube supports software encoding and says expensive equipment is not needed to get started. Confirm that any hardware you choose supports your intended resolution, codec, frame rate, and playlist workflow.

Cloud service

A cloud service can run the feed without a local computer staying on. YouTube’s encoder directory describes Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 streaming prerecorded videos and Upstream as a cloud studio for 24/7 live streaming. Those descriptions do not establish exact playlist, looping, transition, file-size, or plan behavior; verify those details with the service before depending on it.

3. Set the live encoder output—not the upload bitrate

Select the live bitrate using both the outgoing resolution and codec. YouTube’s live settings support RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds). The figures below are YouTube’s current live-ingestion recommendations; minimums are listed separately from recommended bitrates.

Outgoing live resolution and frame rate AV1 or H.265/HEVC H.264
720p60 6 Mbps recommended; 2 Mbps minimum 8 Mbps recommended; 3 Mbps minimum
1080p60 12 Mbps recommended; 4 Mbps minimum 17 Mbps recommended; 6 Mbps minimum
1440p60 24 Mbps recommended; 6 Mbps minimum 34 Mbps recommended; 8 Mbps minimum
2160p60 (4K) 35 Mbps recommended; 10 Mbps minimum 50 Mbps recommended; 14 Mbps minimum

For example, a 1080p60 H.264 live feed calls for 17 Mbps, while YouTube’s 1080p 48–60 fps SDR upload reference is 12 Mbps. They describe different stages, so do not substitute one for the other. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current supported settings.

4. Create the event and connect the feed

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the live event.
  2. Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key into the encoder or service. Treat the key like a password; do not publish or share it.
  3. Choose the encoder’s outgoing resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, CBR mode, and keyframe interval. Use the live-ingestion recommendations above for the output resolution and codec.
  4. Start sending the feed and use the Live Control Room preview to confirm that the incoming video and audio are correct before going live.

YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover creating a stream and connecting its URL and key. For event controls such as latency, DVR, auto-start, and auto-stop, see Manage live stream settings.

5. Test the playlist and monitor the stream

Before leaving a continuous stream unattended, test the complete playlist—not just the first clip—with representative motion, sound, and transitions. Confirm the stream health indicator is acceptable and that the encoder or service behaves as expected when one video ends and the next begins. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers, so a 60 fps source and feed do not guarantee that every viewer or playback device receives a 60 fps rendition.
